Hello girls....

OP posts:
hub2dee · 19/03/2005 17:49

Well done, taxi driver.

How was this afternoon ? Were your family in the sun ? Anyone smoking ?

Hope you managed to stay as strong and convicted as your text makes you sound.

Nearly through the second day with no fags, eh !

I'm not sure of the medical details - maybe someone can jump in - but I think the addictive nicotine stays in your system for five or so days. Carry on like this and by the end of the week the headaches / funny feelings will have diminished and you'll just have the psychology of social smoking to do battle with !!!!

Stick to it !

sparklymieow · 19/03/2005 19:32

I am feeling fine, except me and misdee had a huge panic earlier, (see thread "OMG how crap do me and misdee feel?..) but I didn't have a fag!!! I helped do the garden this morning and Dh has cleared lots of it. And TBH I haven't even had time to think about having a fag!! great innit....

minkmama · 19/03/2005 21:44

thank you hub2dee - i'm at that stage now where i need some harsh words keep telling my non-smoking dh to do it but he just doesn't have the heart! BIG CONGRATS on your news! saw the scan pic and it's so clear! my two dss are only 2yrs 3mths and 11mths so i remember well the thrill of going for the scan!

how's everyone else? i did a lot of pruning today and am absolutely exhausted but what a lovely day! off to have a nice relaxing bath a la fg and read, night night xxx

sparklymieow · 20/03/2005 00:46

48 hours now!!!

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 00:51

Scintillating one, you are a strong and brave mule and for what it's worth, some stranger is proud of how well you're sticking to it.

You saw today that the cigarettes are NOT the tool which gets you through tricky situations. Possible dead dog on hands is not funny, and would have stressed you out immensely. You DIDN'T turn to the fags, so now you KNOW you don't need them as a crutch in any stressful situation or just because you may have a more stressful life than many others.

Good on you.

Stinky Minky: your dh doesn't have the heart to be tough to you ? To straight talk with you about what you do ? Dear me.

Allow me. Please.

Hey, maybe there's something there he likes: the smoke blowing in his face, or the fact that you are vulnerable to an addiction (hence not perfect, also hence need protecting / looking after, or maybe it's that dark edgy femme fatale thing - tough pyscho chick like in the flicks ?). I dunno. I'm no shrink. But from my scant knowledge, it's not doing your health any good at all and probably setting a terribly irresponsible example to any kids you might have.

Seriously, smelling that shite in your hair is disgusting, and tasting it in your mouth when you kiss is gross. And that smell on your skin lingers despite washing, and your nails and teeth might also be a little mingin'.

I'm relieved my rather fierce rant earlier would have angered you / others, and it wasn't meant to abuse / insult, but to try and reinforce some of the reasons you may want to become a non-smoker - cos as far as I'm concerned, I can't see many positives.

Perhaps it's sweet your dh is not giving you permanent grief for your fags, you'd accuse him of being an nag otherwise, but purlease, find it in you to sort this addiction out.

You're reading how sparkly is coping with it, and she's doing pretty bloody well as far as I can see with some headaches and not a lot else. Is she any different / stronger / more determined than you ???

sparklymieow · 20/03/2005 00:58

I am feeling fine tho, I think my body handle things differently, I am going to be about 20 st at the end of it tho, I am eating a lot.... oh but then again, I did eat lots anyway, Misdee said it strange that I can still be tiny and eat lots.... I have saved £8 so far, but spent about £3 on chocolate!! hehe
Today was scary and normally I would have turned to fags, but I didn't even think about it.... and when the lady in the shop asked me if I wanted anything else when I brought a newspaper, it was nice to say No, thanks!!

minkmama · 20/03/2005 20:15

well done sparkly, you've done really well! i remember that it was a great thrill to be able to walk away from the newsagent's/supermarket kiosk with no packet stashed away!

hub2dee, dh has tried the disapproval in the past and it didn't have any effect on me, so i guess he just decided to let me decide when i would do it. i gave up when we decided to start a family and stayed off until ds2 was several months old but naturally one cigarette became a packet and so on. i have been telling myself and dh that i'm giving up every two weeks for the last 9mths now which is quite frightening! the most i've done so far is little over 1 month. i can stay off if i have to (e.g. visiting family) so really my biggest problem is the psychological association of stress with 'relief' which i know is no excuse but it's finding something to substitute it with.

your bullying tactic (smile) is def. having the right effect though and i'm getting more and more geared up to quit day!

prettyfly1 · 20/03/2005 20:21

Hi Guys - sorry for being away -dropinthe how you doin!!!!!!!!!!! Icheated. I really have to find a way to beat the weekend blues cause that is always when i cave. Back on the wagon now, trying not to be too mad at myself, forget about it and get on wiht it. Well done to all you new joiners, just been having a giggle at what some of you guys have put - HOPE YOUR ALL DOING GREAT

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 20:50

minky: Maybe dh needs to do a reverse Lysistrata (Aristophanes) ? Perhaps that would work ?

You obviously are able to give it up when required by external situations: having a baby / long term guests etc. so I guess you need to work on your internal motivation ? Or maybe you're more addicted than you think ?

You mention that for you cigarettes have a psychological association of stress with 'relief.' I'm not sure I'm right, but from what I remember from Carr, nicotine does not calm, but actually INCREASES heart rate and BP.... as you mention, finding other less harmful ways to deal with stress may be useful. Maybe some meditation / yoga may lower your overall stress levels so reducing the need for fags ? Some kind of pro-active couple communication workshops to boost a (hopefully) great relationship might minimise any friction that ever occurs and increase your happiness and the day-to-dayt calmness in your life ?

minkmama · 20/03/2005 21:18

LOL hub2dee, yes, that would probably work, although i'm not sure about dh in a dress

yeah, you're right - essentially i am just a silly coward and know that i can do this. i haven't read carr yet (had used another book before and since passed it on to someone else) but was going to go out and get it this week.

incidently, the stress mentioned before was about my 2 lovely sons who by the end of the day have run me a bit ragged for various reasons. this is making me feel quite foolish now. for shame!

minkmama · 20/03/2005 21:20

prettyfly, just noticed your post - was blinded by hub2dee's bollocking

perhaps you should have a chat with him too!!

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 21:29

minky:

Nothing I can do about your kids - ours is yet to come so I have bugger all suggestions to make here - but is there anything you might be able to do to minimise the associated stress of your timetable ? Some regular childcare so you can hit the gym / have some chill out time ? Getting dh to do more ????

prettyfly1 · 20/03/2005 21:31

i dont know if that would help - hub2dee you have a great deal of knowledge and a fantastic no nonsense approach that i really respect, however in the middle of a really bad craving with all the pregnancy hormones and stuff i cant see myself appreciating it. Keep up the good work though especially if it helps the other guys

Glad to hear you guys are all well - will speak tomorrow -nip tuck is on now -trash tv at its best and the ideal distraction for me!!!!!(julian macmahon - yum yum - cigarettes moi? not while he is aound i can tell ya!!!)

prettyfly1 · 20/03/2005 21:34

They dont make me blue babe - they make me bored. I am on my own a lot of the time or around smokers, not at my desk or able to distract myself and my usual diversionary tactics -i.e running etc. are innappropriate due to being the size of a small whale. Boredom is my biggest trigger, along with persuading myself that smoking is my "luxury" and that i "like" it - neither of which is even remotely true!!!! Any suggestions greatly recieved.

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 21:40

PF: Think you'll get away that easy ?

Ha Ha !

Ha Ha Ha !

minkmama · 20/03/2005 21:41

yes, we're a bit buggered on the babysitting front as we don't have any family near us. i have been hunting for places to do yoga on the days that dh is off (he's v. helpful in fact so i needn't worry about his babysitting abilities) but can't find a class to suit the times i'm free. also he gets back from work too late for me to do an evening class. however, i'm thinking of taking up running again now that it's a bit milder and eventually lighter. i really do think that this sort of space away from the boys and the house in general is the key to my giving up.

right, i'm off now to get showered and watch 'nip/tuck' at 10 so will check in tomorrow if not later xx

misdee · 20/03/2005 21:54

hub2dee, mieow hasnt smoked today, and is now watching a scary film, so wont be smoking tonight either

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 22:25

minky: If you can afford it, maybe get a yoga teacher to come TO your house (I know this isn't the same as a nice trip AWAY from home, which is what would be ideal), but it might be good. This also changes overall mood so little things which would have irritated before just kind of breeze over your blissed out post-yoga brain. Personal trainers also would visit you, at a price.

Now the weather is not quite so darn insulting , grabbing your trainers and doing more running sounds like a fab idea. If you're a teensy bit competitive, you may enjoy timing your circuit to see how you improve, and maybe measure heart rate at the end, recovery rate after 10 mins rest to gauge improved fitness levels and impact of lack of cigarettes. A wrist-mounted BP thingy which you could use every week or so would show you long term improvements too.

minkmama · 20/03/2005 23:07

oh i'm incredibly competitive (with myself that is) so personal bests would be my incentive! i know what you mean about altering my 'perception' of my home environment by introducing a calming association to it with yoga, but trust me, little toddlers voices are just not conducive to higher yogic planes YOUR TIME WILL COME

do misdee and sparkly live together then?

off to bed now - don't you think it's about time you give dw a nice backrub?!!

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 23:17

I agree with you about yogic planes and toddlers. You're right. It would be v. difficult. As you said: my time will come

misdee and sparkly claim they are sisters but they really are just one person with a shared brain and schizophrenia.

I think they speak on the phone and through MN all the time.

Most weekends, they hire out a stretch limo and party with strippers in the back. Personally, I don't think MN should condone this sort of outrageous behaviour.

dw and I have been in bed (sleeping) most of this afternoon as she's been vomitting for some reason. At 21 weeks it's probably some dodgy food at lunch rather than morning sickness, but she got plenty enough cuddles. .

minkmama · 20/03/2005 23:21

awww that's nice. i was also inexplicably sick one night when i was pregnant with ds2 at around 6/7mths after a pizza. was violently vomiting all night and incredibly weak the next day. make sure she drinks lots of fluids and eats well tomorrow! does she have to work?

all right really going to bed now....

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 23:28

Teacher on school hols so no work for two weeks. I've been getting her to drink lots. She'll be fine in the morning, wanting me to do something in the garden no doubt.

Erm... minky, BTW, it's very nice talking to you 'n all, but do you think this diversionary chit chat is gonna get away from the actual topic of this thread ?

Perhaps you would like to confirm you are going to buy Carr, and perhaps you would like to outline when you hope to become a non-smoker ? Are you one already ?

Sparkly seemed to stop literally from one post to the next, but she's a stubborn old mule and is v. strong, but I doubt you want to be outdone by a scintillaing feline creature do you, stinky minky ?

minkmama · 20/03/2005 23:46

oh all right you old bugger, quit day is tomorrow, no right now in fact and yes, i will go out and get allen on tuesday!!!!

hope this doesn't mean that you disappear on me for the chit chat NIGHT NIGHT!

hub2dee · 20/03/2005 23:54

Hey stinky: You ain't doin this for me old girl.

I'm not the one who's smoking.

And I ain't gonna always be around to kick your ass.

You're doin it for you, and because you don't want your kids to see your smoking and emulate mamma.

And sorry to be dumb, but are the bookshops closed all day tomorrow ? And you don't get a lunch break ? Oh, and you know no one who could pick it up for you ? Shame.

Good luck minky, let us all know how it goes.

sparklymieow · 21/03/2005 07:05

I was on MSN last night and told Misdee that I was going to watch a scary movie and to tell you that I haven't smoked yesterday because I knew I wouldn't be back online.
Ya know something Hub2dee, you ain't the first person to say that Misdee and I (see, can write proper!! ) are the same person!! But we ain't!!
Start of day five, and I don't feel so gunked up in my chest now, lets see how today goes.....
