For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Can anybody bear to listen to me ramble then advise me on ds2/hospital/optician? Don't know if I'm being OTT.

OP posts:
littlerach · 11/07/2008 11:20

Ramble all you like, TT.
But i am off out for lunch!!!

back later on though.

I wouldn't have thought you were being OTT, htough, as you don't strike me as that sort. Not that I know you well. But you seem quite calm about stuff.

OsmosisBanana · 11/07/2008 11:21

S'up TooT?

TooTicky · 11/07/2008 11:35

Thanks
I probably ought to take this to a different thread but it's nicer in here, y'know? So apologies for cluttering up thread
Right, ds2 is saying that he can't see properly with his good eye now. He also says that he's blind and he can't see anything, which I think is just a little boy way of flagging up the fact that there is something wrong. Which we know. I think he's suffering a bit from the waiting (as I am a bit), because it feels as though nothing is happening.
Anyway, I phoned the hospital we have been going to and they are happy to see him on Monday but we would have to go through A&E because eye clinic have no appointments available, which DOES seem OTT.
And basically if the referral to the eye hospital came through today we would be quite happy because something would be happening, but if we have to wait months or something ds2 will really be miserable because although he can still read, etc, he is struggling.
My other thought was that I could take him to the optician, where he was seen shortly before the injury, and they could give us an indication of how well is is seeing.
What I don't know is if it is possible for his good eye to be suffering because of being the only really effective eye.
My gut feeling is that we probably don't need to go to the hospital at this stage but...but...

SORRY, that is really long
Please feel free to skip if you can't face it

Tatties · 11/07/2008 11:35

Ramble away TooT

Tatties · 11/07/2008 11:38

If you could get to see the optician relatively quickly and without too much hassle, then I would do that to put your mind at rest

OsmosisBanana · 11/07/2008 11:39

Would you take him to Bath again?

I only ask because the eye hospital in Bristol is VG. DH got a great big chunk of tree stuck in his eye when his visor was up (idiot) and when it flares up he goes back there. It is still A&E but the eye A&E IYSWIM?

I'm not trying to force you to come to Bristol or owt!!

Tatties · 11/07/2008 11:44

I don't think it is OTT to go to the hospital though if that is going to be the soonest opportunity to see someone.

TooTicky · 11/07/2008 11:44

Hmm. Thing is, it's not an emergency situation, just that he's getting a bit desperate with the waiting I think. Which is understandable.
And if we went to Bath on Monday we could see the consultant he's been under. Who is good.
I suppose what I'm worried about is taking hiom in and saying, "he can't see very well," and them saying, "Yes, we know, why are you here?"
Ds2 thinks things have worsened but as a 6yo, albeit a delightful one, he is not completely reliable. And may just be sick of the situation.
AAaaaargh!

OP posts:
TooTicky · 11/07/2008 11:46

And we're waiting for the referral to Bristol anyway. We just don't know how long it will take.

Got to go, dcs shrieking.

OP posts:
Tatties · 11/07/2008 11:48

I think I would go on Monday TooT. Ds2 says things are worse, you need reassurance. I would go.

TigerFeet · 11/07/2008 11:48

Toot, could you get him in to see the optician today? The optician could give you a better indication of whether you can wait for a clinic appt or if you should go through A&E.

It does make me slightly that you've been advised to go through A&E. Surely, rather than doing that, it would be better to give you an emergency eye clinic appt without going through that rigmarole and essentially wasting the A&E staff's time? I'm not suggesting you're a timewaster btw, I just think that a system that encourages you to do that is madness.

FWIW, dd's eye clinic appt came through quite quickly once we were referred by GP. The date came within a few days iirc and the appointment was a couple of weeks after that. Different hospital though, so not sure how much help that is, sorry.

Oh and I meant to mention earlier, FIL had a cataract op last year, easy and painless procedure, he was a day patient, and a massive improvement afterwards. If you have any questions I'm sure he'd be happy to answer them

OsmosisBanana · 11/07/2008 11:52

Not on a similar level at all, but i became shortsighted at that age.

We were sat in the car at a Dr's car park and I was trying to read what the sign said (I was a good reader) and couldn't. Mum was getting more and more irritated and then the light bulb went on - I couldn't see the sign.

I spent the next 2 weeks trying to convince my parents I could see and didn't need to go to an optician and didn't need to wear glasses at all. Which makes me larf now, cos I am as short sighted as you can be without being registered visually impaired!

Just a little anecdote. Sorry to be unhelpful!

Let me know if you do go to Bath, I know a nice veggie / vegan cafe near the cathedral and could do with a practise run to my university to see how long it takes door to door.

berolina · 11/07/2008 11:54

I would take him, TooT. Have emailed you.

Sunflower seed bread, apple, two not-as-ripe-as-they-could-have-been yellow plums.

Am off to pick ds1 up from old kindergarten (last day, and boy am I relieved) and go and sign the contract with LK2

OsmosisBanana · 11/07/2008 11:55

I'm going to PieMinister for lunch. Envy me.

Hopefully the small patch of non-rain will hold out long enough.
