Ask Not For Whom The Kale Curls - It Curls For Thee - 10 / 10 thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 18:27

ok oats is gooood. Slow release enrrgy.
THE single most important thing you can do is make sure you eat regularly. (no more than 4 hours without food. Except hen you are asleep. That is breakfast, lunch, dinner with snacks in between. Otherwise your blood sugar levels will constantly be spiking and plummeting.
Tis not rocket science but avoid tea, coffe, cola, fags, all of which stimulate the adrenal glands to pump out stress hormones.
High levels of cortisol + low levels of seratonim and dopamine.

When stressed, make sure you get plenty of B vits as stress will deplete you of these and B vits are good for horonal blalance.

stuffitllama · 16/05/2008 18:28

and hello fmf and 100
do you know about blood sugar levels then

zippitippitoes · 16/05/2008 18:30

i take vit b supplements [polishes halo]

i do probably eat too much fruit and not enough veg

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 18:32

I found out that although I am a meat eater, my diet lacks protein!

stuffitllama · 16/05/2008 18:35

how is that fmf and how did you find it out

UnderRated · 16/05/2008 18:36

Oh Zippi, poor DD2

Is DS2 ok, Toot?

What are German fruits. My mum claims that they don't have fruit in Germany.

I'm intrigued, ahundred.

2 bananas, peas, peppers, mushrooms, spinach.

zippitippitoes · 16/05/2008 18:37

what is your typical food then fmf

german fruits are grapes and balckberries apparently and cherries

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 18:38

We have had the benefit of a lovely nutrional therpaist on our course. I was telling her how I am constantly hungry and get a bit shakey when I don't eat. She asked me for a run down of a day's typical food.
I only really eat protein at night.
ie breakkie tends to be fruit, snacks tends to be toast and or fruit, lunch tends to be veggie soup and bread, dinner tends to be chicken with veg/salad, baked spud.
Apparently we need protein at every meal. [dunce]

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 18:39

I will be going to work on an egg from now on

stuffitllama · 16/05/2008 18:41

is there not protein in wholemeal stuff eg german type bread

UnderRated · 16/05/2008 18:47

Aren't oats quite good for protein? I think I often don't have much. What happens if we don't eat enough of it?

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 19:21

good sources of protein: meat, eggs, cheese, fish, seeds, nuts, lentils and pulses, mushrooms.

It's all about balance. In order to acheive optimum amounts of the macro minerals (potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium) meals should be balanced: eg 50 per cent of plate shoulkd be veg, 1/4 protein and 1/4 complex carbs.

Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 19:24

oh yes, and the main reason for protein is to rebuild cells and protect muscles.
god, I knew nothing before this week and now I am going to be obsessed about what I eat!

UnderRated · 16/05/2008 19:34

I'm stuffed then. I don't eat meat or fish and very few eggs, seeds & nuts. I try to have lentils, pulses and mushrooms but certainly not every day.

I'm doomed

FrayedKnot · 16/05/2008 19:38

Protein at each meal definitely makes you feel fuller and avoids the shakiness.

I have much shakiness if I neglct to eat for more than about 2 hours

I find protein at breakfast difficult.

I do find if I eat a proper cooked brekkie I can go for hours afterwards without eating, whereas even after my large bowl of muesli at 7.30 I am hungry again at about 10, so there must be somehting in it.

zippitippitoes · 16/05/2008 19:39

sports nutrition is carbohydrate before and night before and protein after

bit mor e complex but that is it basically

FrayedKnot · 16/05/2008 20:18

I generally eat a salad for lunch with hummous, tuna or cheese of some sort, plus a couple of oatcakes or Dr Karg's crackers.

I would say that would be the 25 / 25 / 50 balance.

FrannyandZooey · 16/05/2008 20:20

but there is protein in nearly all foods - I don't think separating food into 'protein foods' is actually a helpful concept
the western diet usually contains too MUCH protein and it causes us to lose calcium
one reason why vegan diet is usually adequate in calcium intake is because it is not swimming in protein from meat and dairy produce - the high calcium recommendations are based on the needs of someone eating meat daily

OP posts:
Fullmoonfiend · 16/05/2008 20:26

ah but most RDA stuff is bollcoks as everyone is different and we all have different nutritional needs!

Protein doesn't have to come from meat, as you know!

Meusli is a good brekki, if you can have some nuts/seeds etc for protein.
