For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Hello veggers

I've been out in RL [arghhhh]

I have been prescribed new AD's and they are taking some getting used to. I need rid of this black dog. DH has been fantastic, I have been mean and shouty and not myself at all and he has doled out hugs and tissues as required with no recriminations. Am feeling more myself today, hurrah . I am so tired though that I can barely concentrate on what I'm doing. I probably shouldn't be driving but am doing. Such is life.

Vegging is going well but exercise less so. What is this podcast of which you speak? Is it for running? Could I have a link?

I love the title . I want to dance on the spot all trance like. And be 18 again

IdrisTheDragon · 14/04/2008 11:07

Hello TigerFeet

Here is the podcast

Glad you are feeling more like yourself .

How are things going with your DD's school? Was it you who has a thing where they haven't measured the distance properly?

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 11:32

Yes Idris that was me

We are in the process of appealing... so we will just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the podcast - I will have a look at home later.

FrannyandZooey · 14/04/2008 12:38

happy lunchtime everyone
I have told ds he doesn't know the teachers and he is cool about it
I think I am currently underestimating him which is great as I have spent the last 3 years thinking "oh GOD I wish you would be a little bit happier about being in a group if I am not there"
he is finally ready i suppose

am eating spinach, pepper, cucumber, tomato, chickpea and hummus salad

does anyone fancy doing that 27 natural foods or whatever it was again?

TigerFeet hope things improve soon. Does exercise help?

Bee I don't think you should do running if you don't like it. Although maybe with the podcast for inspiration it would be a bit different? I do bike, treadmill and used to do rowing and stairs at the gym - also used to do lots of different weighty machine things and some free weights. Am a bit limited now but better than nothing
I like the variety and the way you can try to compete against what you did last time and if you keep track, you can see huge improvement quite fast

I like the idea of the podcast. I'm not very good at motivation with exercise and it appeals having a structure. Gym would be good but can't get to one or afford it.

This is very but I don't actually understand the technology of pod things and mp3 players etc. What do you use - ipods? Are they expensive? Is an ipod the same as an MP3 player?

Am writing dp lists of exactly what to do while I'm away on each day. He's going to be extremely insulted and cross I know, but if I don't he will say he didn't do whatever because I didn't tell him to and he didn't realise. It's 2 pages long.

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 12:53

Boco - an ipod is a really expensive MP3 player, that ties you to a specific website that charges over the going rate for downloads. Any old mp3 player is fine for pretty much anything other than downloads from the itunes website. Apple like to agressively market the ipod as the coolest mp3 player around, but imho it's no better than any other make. I paid about £30 for my Phillips, it has 1GB of memory which is more than enough for me and the sound quality is fine. Clear as mud . In short, any old mp3 player is fine. It's worth investing in a half decent set of earphones if you are going to run with one though, as the cheapy ones that come with the unit generally have shit sound quality and fall out of your ears.

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 12:54

What's the 27 natural foods thing?

Boco · 14/04/2008 12:56

Thanks Tiger.

FrannyandZooey · 14/04/2008 13:00

Anorak's doctor told her about it
apparently in countries where they eat really healthily (eg Japan classic style cuisine) they tend to eat an average of 27 different natural foods every day

ok I am a bit sketchy on the details but it was something like that

some of us tried it for a bit, it was quite good

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 13:04

sounds interesting

what are we allowed to eat then?

We are off to Spain at the weekend for a week - lots of very fresh seafood direct from the fisherman, orange juice and salad, mmmmmm. Not olives though. Only mad people without proper taste buds eat olives.

FrannyandZooey · 14/04/2008 13:06

same as usual, you can eat what you like but you must aim to have 27 different natural foods each day
so you can count NUTS (this was popular )
you might have a large salad with lots of different things in, or a muesli with lots of grains in, etc

OP posts:
TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 13:16

Oh I seeeeeeeee [lightbulb]

So it doesn't preclude non-natural foods then like diet coke, as long as you get your 27 in? And if you have, for eg, porridge for breakfast and an uber healthy homemade flapjack later on, all the oats are still 1 of your 27?

SO for lunch today I have had a large bowl of home made veg soup - probably 3 or 4 10/10 portions - but it contained cauliflower, carrot, parsnip, onion, garlic, swede, cabbage, leek, homemade chicken stock (no hidden nasties), parsley, black pepper so that would be 11 of the 27?

I appear to be doing quite well already apart from the diet coke

BBBee · 14/04/2008 13:36

hi tiger - nice to see you.

I went to market and we bought:

blood oranges
oranges
dates
figs
plums
mango (non-cunting I hope - the greengrocer man pressed it and did that stallholder suggestive thing)

it was all I could carry adn I am excited like a proper vegger.

Whilst cooking lunch I ranked veggers in there good veggerness. I shan't list it here though! boco, you were quite near the bottom I am afraid. So was pink. Tiger I moved you because of the diet coke.

BBBee · 14/04/2008 13:38

and 100 was bottom after me

MrsCarrot · 14/04/2008 13:40

I have an ipod but only really use it in the car. I don't use the podcast for running either, though I roughly followed their pattern week by week in batches of minutes.

I want to do 27 food thing, that sort of diet is probably what I need at the moment.

I got my period this morning. I was moaning at the weekend about being bloated and I forgot it was PMT as they've only just come back. However, it occurred to me this morning that I will never have another one. Was a very, very odd feeling. I thought what if I don't finish the pack, will I give them to someone or throw them away. What a stupid pointless thought, as if three spare sanitary towels is of consequence.

Boco · 14/04/2008 13:49

That must be a really weird thought MrsC. Maybe you could do something symbolic to mark it, something very kind to yourself. Go buy that marvelous slouchy cardigan you liked.

Bee, I am not surprised at my low ranking. Although right now I'm eating a punnet of raspberries and they're very nice.

I love those couldren pates - have the feta and roasted vegetable one atm and could eat it all in one go.

BBBee · 14/04/2008 14:16

oh MrsC how very strange for you - in a really odd way. I have a dear friend who has a very similar thing to you and she had her operation last week. She is doing very well.

I will think about you and your period and your sanitary protection dilemma.

BBBee · 14/04/2008 14:17

oh and agree with boco about the purchasing thing - something you really like but could not usually justify.

I propose a ruby necklace.

BBBee · 14/04/2008 14:19

I have done that before - I had a very strange time realted to a misdiagnosed medical condition. I remember when I came out of the hospital having found out what was really going on I went and had a peach champagne cocktail (bellini) and bought myself a necklace with a kingfisher on it to kind of - not celebrate but mark the occasion.

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 14:29

I agree MrsC you should definitely mark the occasion somehow. You deserve a treat, and a sumptuous, extravagant one at that.

BBBeee you should put me at the bottom of your list. I am not very 10/10 at all most of the time... I am something of a fraud on this thread.

I have just cleared my desk of diet coke detritus - I rinse out the cans/bottles and take them home for recycling [moves up BBBeee's list] every Friday but I forgot last week. I have just put 6 330ml cans and 4 500ml bottles in my bag [moves back down BBBee's list].

Boco · 14/04/2008 14:30

Lol at Bee's ruby necklace compared to my slouchy cardigan. Go with Bee's advice. And a champagne cocktail. She gives far more glam advice. We should all do the writing nice things about ourselves in the droplets too.

stuffitllama · 14/04/2008 14:32

Mrs C how very strange that must feel. Will you not get PMT any more either?

Just checking in as have to do school run in shocking swimming pool type rain.

nicoise with carrots, sweetcorn (yuk -- tinned), salady stuff, tomatoes, green beans, other stuff can't remember. Couldn't face the olives. Achovies too so my brain should work today. Can't fit in the meat only large piece of chocolate cake.

Hope you are all very well.

eternalstudent · 14/04/2008 15:46

I have just been for a run. I watched the London marathon yesterday and had this overwhelming urge to do it next year. I hate running. Exercise is fine, but I have never done the running thing.

Managed 10 mins running, then 5 mins walking, then ran another 7 mins UPHILL!!!!!

Am now a beetroot. A wobbly one. If one turns into a vegetable does it count towards 10/10?

melon, kidney beans, lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, grapes. Prob about 4 / 10 so far.

at the day trip to the seaside on a train. Will there be thick chunks of crusty bread with nice cheese and home made picled onions? And lashings of ginger beer?

MrsCarrot · 14/04/2008 15:49

I like all of those ideas, a slouchy cardi, cocktails and jewels! I had thought of getting some jewellery, maybe something with three stones in, a celebration of having three children rather than focusing on the uterus being gone. Does that sound naf? I was thinking of a ring but I don't mean like an eternity or those ones you see in magazines with all pink stones for a girl , a subtle piece. Dh said why not get a diamond, ruby and sapphire till I pinted out this would be the French flag on my finger. I like the idea of three tiny little emerald cut emeralds in a row deco style.

I think I will have pmt, stuffit, as they are not removing the ovaries. I will still have a hormonal cycle.

MrsCarrot · 14/04/2008 15:52

Hmm, I wonder how that works, you get PMT but no period so what stops the PMT? A hormone must trigger the bleeding, it doesn't just fill up and overflow does it, maybe you feel better when that happens.
