I had a cold that started on 18th with a sore throat, headache and then a cough which will not shift

Two days ago I felt great, like it has gone and now back with a vengeance

I haven't tested for coronavirus as we are at home anyway with no other guests so already 'self-isolating'

Anyone else had this, how long did it last?

Why on earth have you been self isolating for almost 2 weeks? Lots of coughs and colds going around, as there are every winter.

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 18:11

Not 'self-isolating' but not really mixing with folk or going out and about as I cannot stop coughing

Same in this house: me, DH and DD

Evenstar · 30/12/2023 18:15

Almost five weeks in here 😔 but I am asthmatic. It just seemed to start with a bad cold, husband had it too, tested negative for Covid, he had a cough until last week, which is unusual for him.

I would be glad to hear if anyone else has had whatever it is and when they stopped coughing.

QueenofLouisiana · 30/12/2023 18:18

DS is exactly the same, even down to a few days respite before it reappeared with a vengeance.

He got an emergency GP appointment because it’s triggered the asthma which hasn’t bothered him in 6 years. He’s now using inhalers (both types) several times a day. Living on ice lollies and jelly to try and soothe his throat. Bought him night nurse to try and get him a decent night’s sleep tonight.

I thought it was Freshers’ Flu and that he was was run down after his first term. Maybe not!

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 18:20

Dd has this as well (fresher too) but it has been very nasal for her, DS has the cough 😢

It is relentless

I've had a cough for 6 weeks, so has my DD. Really fed up now.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 30/12/2023 18:22

Mine’s only just getting better - it has lasted 7 weeks.

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 18:22

7 weeks 😱

DH has had a cough now for at least 3 weeks. It’s better now than it was, but he is still coughing a bit. None of the rest of have caught it though.

Ginsmything · 30/12/2023 18:25

My cough started on 10 December and is still going, I have infected my OH who has never since I met him 40+ years ago had a cough! We are both totally fed up with it as it seems to be getting better and then knocks you back again. 😞

Motnight · 30/12/2023 18:27

I have had a cough for a month 😭. Tested negative for COVID, it's much better than it was but still annoying.

Sharpkat · 30/12/2023 18:27

Same here started on 18 December with awful sore throat and headache. That went on from a few days and then from cough started. Waking up at night coughing, getting a headache from coughing. Am absolutely sick of it.

Margaritawithlime · 30/12/2023 18:27

All of us. Me DH DS and DD. DD started it at the beginning of December she’s still coughing. DH and I hit worst by it we are on week 3.5 still hacking up. DS less affected but going on 2 weeks for him even so.

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 18:28

So many people have it!

What is happening with the viruses 🦠?

OP posts:
JoanOgden · 30/12/2023 18:29

I've had a cough for at least 6 weeks. It's better than it was but I still have at least two coughing fits per day. So tedious.

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 18:30

Sorry to hear of people's experiences.

Did anyone find anything that helped with the symptoms?

OP posts:
Sharpkat · 30/12/2023 18:34

@everythingisgoingup I, too, would love to know what helps Flowers

Evenstar · 30/12/2023 18:54

Hot drinks seem to help, I have a humidifier on the bedside table. I have taken one Cocodamol some nights and Night Nurse on other nights, but really only if I have had a very bad cough in the evening. Mine has seemed better for the odd day, but then comes back just as bad.

dubmimi · 30/12/2023 18:57

7 weeks here & still going. Got antibiotics & steroids 6 weeks ago for bronchitis & it helped for a few days but then came back. Can't shift it.

Justhereforaibu1 · 30/12/2023 18:57

I've had a cough since Nov 18th I think the date was. Have been to the doc and given an inhaler for the first time. It is getting better but still a bugger

pippapipps · 30/12/2023 19:16

I've only noticed over the past couple of days that my cough from hell has more or less gone I had it from about the 20th November..5/6 weeks ago!

I have asthma which made me tight chested at times with the relentless coughing.. my lungs were actually sore I felt like I'd been slapped hard across the upper back..

Sweetaschocolate · 30/12/2023 21:06

8 weeks here, no cold at first though.
Started of with a smoke sensation in the back of throat and high temp.
Had antibiotics that did nothing, then 2 weeks ago had a cold which I think has prolonged it.
Been back to the doctors but said just up my inhalers.

mrstea301 · 30/12/2023 21:36

Not just me then!

Had a mild cough from mid November, but thought I'd just picked it up on the plane home from holiday. It hit with a vengeance on 16th December and I've been coughing my head off ever since, to the point of being sick at points. Thought I was recovering, felt much better on Thursday, only for it to return again from Friday 😭 just so fed up of feeling sick now!

everythingisgoingup · 30/12/2023 21:37

Currently feeling 'twinge' at back of the throat and cannot seem to shift the tight feeling in chest

The cough is unproductive which is exhausting

Sorry to hear the length of time others have been suffering
