Cough, cough, cough aah, will it ever stop?

I had a cold that started on 18th with a sore throat, headache and then a cough which will not shift

Two days ago I felt great, like it has gone and now back with a vengeance

I haven't tested for coronavirus as we are at home anyway with no other guests so already 'self-isolating'

Anyone else had this, how long did it last?

DS 16 has this right now, it’s grim. Sibs and parents have avoided. I’m wondering if it’s whooping cough, he is vaccinated but kids of his age got the less effective version. Obviously could just be another horrible virus…

PinedApple · 31/12/2023 08:20

My DM, sister and Mil all seem to have this! DM and sis have had it since around 7 Dec. They are just now coming through it but still coughing occasionally and like you say they start to feel better and then it's back. Hopefully it's on the way out now. MIL has it too and had to go to a&e as she's hurt her ribs from coughing so much! She thought she had fractured a rib but they think possibly a torn muscle. Awful. I don't know how I've avoided it so far. touch wood.

Steaming helps - I have a steam inhaler from boots but a bowl and a towel over the head will do.

everythingisgoingup · 31/12/2023 08:32

Horrible, horrible virus

In our family we all have it but my son and I are the ones who are coughing

DD and DH have the snotty nose

I feel sleep deprived

Back to work on Tuesday 🙁

I'm at the end of week 7. DS is a couple of days ahead of me. Finally feel like it's on the run - still coughing a bit but nothing like we were. It wasn't covid (we tested negative plus we'd had covid in October); pretty sure it was flu that went to bronchitis.
Gallons of hot honey and lemon were the only thing that helped a little bit but didn't do much.

Jingleballs2 · 31/12/2023 08:39

Ds has it, 3 weeks and still going strong. Just cleaned sick off the floor.. again.. because its triggering his gag reflex ☹️ poor kid

3luckystars · 31/12/2023 08:40

Put Vicks rub on you feet with socks over it. Not joking it works.

EatenbytheYuleCat · 31/12/2023 08:41

@Jingleballs2 yup, DS was doing that. We stationed a sick bowls in every room just in case! Grim isn't it. Poor kids. Hang in there.

Yddraigoldragon · 31/12/2023 08:54

I have had it too, for weeks. I found hot non milky drinks helpful, black coffee or herbal tea as milk seems to add to the gummed up feeling. Also, Potters mucus cough pastilles really help, there are 2 types, both are good for suppressing the incessant coughing.

everythingisgoingup · 31/12/2023 09:01

Thanks for the tips, I will try and get some of these pastilles to help make the days more manageable

I have been using strepsils and jakeman 's which have helped a little

The washing up bowl is a permanent feature in his bedroom at the minute 😩

Sorry to hear about everyone's horrible experiences and wishing everyone a speedy recovery 💐

Turmeric and honey dissolved in warm water.

Or teaspoon of honey and lemon in hot water. It soothes the throat.

Also steam inhalers.

Sitting upright to sleep.

Wear a mask when you go out to protect your airway from sudden temperature changes which can trigger more coughing.

Get your chest listened to by GP to make sure it's not a chest infection needing antibiotics (even if non productive cough). You might also need an inhaler to manage your airways.

I know because I've had covid twice and ended up on steroid and other inhalers both times owing to persistent cough. I'm on week 10 now of my second bout- not coughing much but still wheezing . 😳😫

Get well soon to everyone

3luckystars · 31/12/2023 13:07

Vicks on your feet really does work!! Try it.

3luckystars · 31/12/2023 13:08

You must put socks over it though.

everythingisgoingup · 31/12/2023 13:09

yddraigoldragon

Bought some mucus pastilles which seem to he helping move things when I cough

I will try the steaming because having a warm bath/shower has helped

Honey and lemon sound like an option

Thanks everyone, wishing you all a speedy recovery 😊

How is everyone feeling now? I'm 10 days into an awful cough which sounds like what you've described. My teen DD is almost at 4 weeks now but isn't really ill apart from the barking cough.

everythingisgoingup · 09/01/2024 21:14

I am in my fourth week, the cough has subsided however I am still 'chesty' and blowing my nose regularly

Fingers crossed I am over the worst part however I still fall asleep every night on the bath!

Hope you start to feel better but it does linger

DS started at end of November and still chesty when he coughs ☹️

OP posts:
Evenstar · 09/01/2024 21:15

Still coughing, despite a five day course of steroid tablets, extra inhalers and now on a course of antibiotics. I don’t know when it will end ☹️

everythingisgoingup · 09/01/2024 21:17

I did get my chest listened too after 3 2wks GP said it was clear but could have been Coronavirus or RSV that I had which is why is was lingering 😱

Have had this since Dec 6th - all over Christmas. Was especially bad between 20th and 31st with headache, sore throat, total lack of energy and a productive cough. I now have the cough, muscle ache and fatigue - all the usual post- viral stuff I know. I am very rarely ill - this has clobbered me.

everythingisgoingup · 09/01/2024 21:29

gingerwarthog
It is an awful virus, DH and I had it over xmas, DD and DS started before.

We are both still tired like you 💤

Thanks @everythingisgoingup !
Hope we all feel better soon. By 9pm I'm in my pyjamas.

everythingisgoingup · 09/01/2024 21:33

I keep nodding off in the bath 😂

Oh dear, looked at this thread for some solutions but it seems we're all in the same boat! Whole family ill over Christmas and New year 😔 , no-one completely well even now but poor DS is in a terrible state with the cough - and nobody is getting any sleep because that hacking is LOUD!
