Cough, cough, cough aah, will it ever stop?

I had a cold that started on 18th with a sore throat, headache and then a cough which will not shift

Two days ago I felt great, like it has gone and now back with a vengeance

I haven't tested for coronavirus as we are at home anyway with no other guests so already 'self-isolating'

Anyone else had this, how long did it last?

Beeinalily I hear you!

My son kept us awake before Christmas and we were all exhausted 🙁

Wishing your son well and a speedy recovery 💐

Thank you, I hope we're ALL better soon! 🌸

Sorry to hear so many of you are still struggling. It is a beast of a virus. I have decided to take the day off sick and not work until I'm noticeably better. I felt better on Monday so did a 15 minute walk to the shops and cooked dinner. Felt OK at the time but then awful the next day. I'm so bored but I think this stupid cough needs proper rest to overcome it. I am really missing getting out of the house and doing stuff.

Gingernaut · 10/01/2024 09:06

I've been coughing so hard, that I've hurt my back

It's crippling.

ItchyMaryHavingAFag · 10/01/2024 14:40

I’ve had it since mid-November. The cough is definitely on its way out now but I am absolutely exhausted. If I do anything I am then wiped out for hours after. Never known anything like it.

everythingisgoingup · 10/01/2024 16:26

itchyMary did you test to see if it was Coronavirus?

I'm definitely getting over it now, but at one point I'd coughed so hard that I had pulled muscles in my back and side and it hurt to stand. Went back to work on the 3rd then had to call in sick the next two days and just rest. Got a 5 day course of steroids and a turbohaler from the doctor which seems to have done the trick. Still a wee bit of a cough but much much better thankfully!

Shellingbynight · 10/01/2024 18:57

I've had this cough/breathlessness since 21st December although I realise that isn't long compared with some of you! Until a few days ago my entire back and chest was hurting from coughing. I feel better today, less coughing, but it seems to go on a cycle of feeling better then feeling worse again. It feels neverending.

I tested on the 25th and was positive for Covid, so I know what it was, not that that makes much difference.

I'm asthmatic and my GP previously told me that when I have a respiratory infection I should increase my steroid inhaler use if necessary, so I've been doing that for a fortnight, am now reducing it again.

I an sympathise with falling asleep in the bath, this virus is so tiring, I have needed a lot of sleep. I'm retired so at least I don't have to go to work - I would have needed a lot of time off!

It is horrid isn't it ? I have just got back from a visit to my parent's and my Mum was in tears as she had felt so poorly with it 🙁

I think it is how long it goes on for that has surprised us and caused such frustration 😞

It's pretty tough going. I'm coughing less bit feel absolutely wiped out now and still coughing at night. Feels more chesty tickly now. Have had to give up on work this week, even my desk job from home was too much. I'm almost certain it's not COVID, all tests are negative.

Beeinalily · 13/01/2024 17:27

I'm getting seriously worried about my (adult) DS now. He coughed so hard that he seemed to have a spasm, like a mini fit, but he wouldn't let me call amn ambulance.

everythingisgoingup · 13/01/2024 18:32

Beinalily
It is quite scary when this happens because you cannot catch your breath.

It is a spasm, that is a good explanation, there is so much ' junk ' in my chest and nose I wonder whether it will ever stop. You feel like you are drowning in fluid 😞

There is something called the 100 day cough going around. I've had something anyway for a month now; I'm over the no-energy and sore skin phase but this wretched cough will not shift. I thought I'd blown up my brain last night, I coughed so much and got such a headache. I've been trying to go on walks slowly up hills to take deeper breaths and force fresh air in the old lungs.. weirdly it seems to help dislodge the phlegm without requiring coughing like a bandit so I will try and do it every day now as I think it's helping.

I have tried this while steaming and it definitely works, perhaps I will try this outside 😊

I have had this since the end of september. I have had antibiotics, steroids and 2 inhalers. I am so exhausted. Bloods, x ray and ct scan have raised nothing out of the ordinary. Now got some sort of virus or just so run down that i am just wiped out from it. Strained chest muscles causing me pain from all the coughing too. Seriously fed up of it!!!! Never known anything like it.

My husband swears by "hydroxyl radicals"(whatever they are) in fresh air as a cure-all the same way my Dad loved TCP. It can't hurt and it definitely feels better to be off the sofa and outside.

orangetriangle · 13/01/2024 20:00

had this since Tuesday before Xmas and it's awful had it all over Xmas and new year only in the last week have I started to feel better. I would feel better then back it would come again
antibiotics
steroids x 2
night nurse
co codamel
honey and lemon
cough mixture
vicks
you name it I tried it really wore me down still nervous now about going outside in the cold on case it starts me off
at one point my ribs hurt so much from coughing and my head was pounding

dlago · 13/01/2024 21:13

Whooping cough? There's apparently lots of it around

saraclara · 13/01/2024 21:17

Four weeks so far. Manageable in the day time now, but dreadful from late at night. I've rarely managed to get to sleep before 2am because all I do is cough.

ItchyMaryHavingAFag · 14/01/2024 01:11

everythingisgoingup · 10/01/2024 16:26

itchyMary did you test to see if it was Coronavirus?

Nope. Didn’t see much point and I didn’t have any tests sitting around.

Thankfully I now seem to be coming out of it. Not coughing as much in the day, mostly at night, and my need to sleep in the day is much reduced. It still seems to vary day by day but I don’t feel like death warmed up anymore. Thank goodness.

I hope everyone else is starting to feel a little better. This has been a solid nine weeks for me now.

QueenBitch666 · 14/01/2024 01:39

8 weeks post viral infection. Still got the fucking cough

everythingisgoingup · 14/01/2024 08:14

Pleased to hear some are feeling better.
I am on week 4, sounds like a bit longer to go 🙁

I googled 100 day cough/whooping cough and symptoms very similar so I am now wondering whether this is what we have.

For me the cough is better at night, some better than others, still feel tired during the day (nodding off in bath) but slowly getting better.

Have any of you tested your vitamin d levels? You can do it cheaply with finger prick tests. You can then supplement accordingly but do it with vitamin K and magnesium. Ask GP to test or iron levels. Take a decent multi with zinc and b12 in it. Lots of warming soups.

SmallestInTheClass · 14/01/2024 08:58

Still coughing but more at night now. I am at least getting 2-3 hours of sleep between coughing fits now. I can't see me being up to going back to work yet though. I'm absolutely exhausted. Getting out for a very slow 20-30 min walk each day but that's it. I'm used to running 10 miles and miss my exercise as it's such an important part of keeping me healthy mentally. Cough deficiency more chesty now, hope that's progress? I take daily vit D, otherwise think multi vitamins are a bit of a con, so don't take them.
