Cough, cough, cough aah, will it ever stop?

I had a cold that started on 18th with a sore throat, headache and then a cough which will not shift

Two days ago I felt great, like it has gone and now back with a vengeance

I haven't tested for coronavirus as we are at home anyway with no other guests so already 'self-isolating'

Anyone else had this, how long did it last?

@NoisyDachshunddd I expect so. I've had it and my DD 13 too. She still has a residual cough 7 weeks on. I've had the classic symptoms including the whoop noise, coughing until almost sick, urinary incontinence and coughing in violent bursts with gaps of sometimes hours in between. Also had no fever which is normal with WC. GP said it might be 100 day cough (another name for Whooping cough). I know several people who think they have had it but no one has been tested. A bit of a glimmer of hope, after 4 weeks of feeling awful I got back to work part-time this week and slept for a 3 hour stretch without waking to cough last night. Very slow progress but am getting better!

Have you found anything that helps? My son coughed and was sick all over his room this morning :( he's 11. It's miserable

Sorry to hear about your son, mine was the same.

Unfortunately nothing really helped however it did lessen over time, he swallows now when has the urge to cough and that helps.

He will feel better but it takes time 🙁

@NoisyDachshunddd sorry to hear about your DS. Not much seems to help unfortunately. Sitting up to sleep and sipping ice cold water or hot lemon squash gave a bit of relief. I was making a flask for DD to have overnight when she was ill. I also found that trying to end a coughing fit with a couple of little puffs out (blowing through pursed lips) before breathing in seemed to help to stop me going on and on coughing. I am now 4 weeks in and had a much better night of sleep, only woke once. I feel so much better than a week ago.

His inhaler helps and his steroids finish today but he can't be on those forever and can't imagine they will want to give him a fifth course. Will just have to see how he is tomorrow I'm trying all the natural things as well. It really is a horrible cough. Hope everyone feels better soon :)

Frustration124 · 30/01/2024 08:30

Back to the doctors today. Rough night and high temp. The cough that never quits!

BionicEar · 05/02/2024 18:32

Entering week 9 now. Cough is still random, can go a couple of hours without coughing then have prolong coughing fit which then triggers off my prolapse and incontinence. Cough seems to vary from chesty barking type to fluid wheezy type.

I am exhausted as it’s affecting my sleep and have fatigue on top. Also feel anxious about incontinence as worried will wet self in public.

Have signed off work today as feeling so exhausted as have bad cold and sinus infection on top of usual symptom. I don’t like taking time off work, but genuinely feel I need time to recover as feels like I’m stuck in vicious cycle of having a couple of better days followed by three or four horrendous days. Having listened to my body today was right decision as been asleep for most of it.

Have rebooked to go back to Dr but got to wait 2 weeks as no appointments available before then.

BionicEar · 05/02/2024 18:34

@Frustration124 how did it go at the Dr?

@Frustration124 how did it go at the Dr?

Edited

They got me to send off a whooping cough test for him. It's not come back yet. He's had more steroids but still very much the same. Thank you for asking :)

BionicEar · 05/02/2024 20:55

@Frustration124 hopefully the tests might give you some idea what he’s dealing with.

Hope the steroids kick in and start to make a difference.

BionicEar · 05/02/2024 21:00

@Donutsforbreakfast hopefully the clinic will be able to give you good advice.

I’ve downloaded the Squeezy app that was recommended to me by the person I saw. My issue is that I’m so tired it’s knackering to try and do the exercises but I’m trying to do them as know it will make a difference.

Don’t want to be wearing Tena pads forever as they cost a fortune and not particularly comfortable to wear either.

Anyone else still struggling? I've had a cough since the second week of January that started as a mild cold. I'm currently on my 4th (!) course of antibiotics, taking second set of steroid tablets, and taking inhalers too. I ended up at A&E about a month ago as I was so breathless, had a chest x ray which identified fluid on the lungs (although the doctor at A&E did not mention this) and my GP phoned me last week telling me I have pneumonia and that I shouldn't be working. Im utterly fed up, but I know of at least 3 others with very similar trajectory.

MrsMidgeMaisel · 21/03/2024 07:59

Forgot to add, vomiting and peeing with the severity of the cough (don't usually have stress incontinence!) and I have (doctor thinks) torn cartilage between two ribs or rib and spine!

everythingisgoingup · 21/03/2024 07:59

Hi, i started the thread and the cough has come and gone since December.

No antibiotics for me but annoying cough and tiredness ☹️

Hope you feel better soon 🐣

Have you been to the doctors again recently? I would go again as that's an awful long time for a cough to be lingering.

everythingisgoingup · 21/03/2024 10:31

Not been to Drs but saw one when it first started and they mentioned whooping cough or RSV which takes ages to go according to GP.

Son had antibiotics and we have all had similar symptoms

Stress incontinence being one MrsMidgeMaisal it seems yours has been a long time too

Mine goes and then comes back, if that makes sense, accompanied by fatigue ☹️

Mine has also been a been long time @everythingisgoingup but I would go back to a doctor if I were you, as mine has gone into pneumonia and I didn't realise! Don't get me wrong I was getting increasingly breathless but I was still working (albeit from home) and looking after my toddler!

everythingisgoingup · 21/03/2024 16:34

Thanks MrsMidgeMaisel

We plough on don't we 😂

Oh bejeezus! We are in week 5. DS has been soooo poorly. We've been to hospital 3 times. So over it here!

BionicEar · 22/03/2024 22:28

I finally got rid of my cough in week 15.

When I last posted I had to take nearly 3 weeks off work and the GP gave me antibiotics as I hit a bad patch during that time and was too ill to work.

I still get tired easily, but I feel so much more like myself. One of my colleagues commented earlier this week that I look more myself (as was very washed out before) and I seem brighter when talking to people.

I have boosted myself up taking iron pills and vitamins in bid to aid my body in its fight and to restore health.

I am still seeing gyno physio for my prolapse issue as this was made worse with all the coughing. I highly recommend if any of you are having issues with wetting yourself when coughing that you seek further support via your GP and to download the Squeezy app.

To all of you still suffering, I hope the end is in sight for you. Go back to your GP if still not right and get support as needed. Mostly take care of yourself and don’t overdo it.
