Cough, cough, cough aah, will it ever stop?

I had a cold that started on 18th with a sore throat, headache and then a cough which will not shift

Two days ago I felt great, like it has gone and now back with a vengeance

I haven't tested for coronavirus as we are at home anyway with no other guests so already 'self-isolating'

Anyone else had this, how long did it last?

I'm over it now.

Took 8 weeks at least and some ABs. Fucking nightmare it was.

BeethovenNinth · 15/01/2024 11:36

Dunno smallest but I do various things and haven’t had a cough in years let alone flu.

merrymelodies · 15/01/2024 12:01

I'm lying in bed awake from this damned cough! It started two weeks ago with an asthma attack. I rarely if ever get asthma. I saw the doctor and he said to continue with the inhaler. I'm glad I saw this post.

Thank you! I'm wondering now if it's Covid. I should've tested but it didn't occur to me until I read what pp have said.

loulamay · 16/01/2024 09:42

So glad I found this post - it's been on and off for me, DH and DD since late November and although DD is pretty much over it, DH and I have good and bad days although we're definitely better than over Christmas which saw us both in bed and me with the worst eye infection I have ever had.

I went to the GP and he scared me a little by suggesting a chest x-ray (which is tomorrow) but also suggested that it might be silent reflux and has given me pills.

Has anyone else had this suggested to them? My cough and sore throat is definitely worse at night - does that mirror anyone else? Wondering about our house being so dry with the damn heating on all the time (we're in the Lakes and it's bloody freezing). The cough has also aggravated some lower back pain as someone else on this thread said.

Keep reading about this 100-day cough but it's in the likes of The Sun so not sure how much to trust about that haha.

The silent reflux is the thing that's bothering me - the symptoms mirror a cold and cough almost identically and you apparently don't get the heartburn like classic GERD. Can't believe that I have that if we all have the same symptoms though?!

So over it. Never had an illness go on this long.

Going to try the Vicks on the feet tonight for sure 😆

loulamay · 16/01/2024 09:43

Should have said - just tested for COVID and negative.

Thanks for your post, interesting to read about the eye infection this is a symptom my Dd had.

DS had antibiotics for crackles on his chest ? Chest infection. Seriously annoying cough.

DH had cold but not cough so much.

The GP suggested coronavirus or RSV

However when I looked up whooping cough/100 day cough thus seemed to match the symptoms

We never tested for coronavirus either

TBH I have plodded on feeling rubbish, sadly I was will over Xmas (two weeks leave 😢) but returned to work in January needing another week off (never took it)

It just goes on and on......goes away and comes back 🙄

Perhaps your GP is being cautious? We have been told three different diagnoses so 🤷‍♀️

Hope you feel better soon 💐

loulamay apologies for typos on my phone 😂

I’m pretty certain that I have whooping cough (I make the whooping sound when I cough, sometimes). I wonder if many others also have it, but GP’s aren’t thinking about it or testing for it. I think we should be talking to GP’s about it, to raise awareness, they should be testing, perhaps there should be repeated immunization as immunization only lasts for 10 years?

I read a journal article that said that most people with whooping cough develop acid reflux. I’m following the Acid Watcher Diet for acid reflux (I recommend the book), but have also started on ompeprazole (reluctantly).

Pleased to hear some are feeling better.
I am on week 4, sounds like a bit longer to go 🙁

I googled 100 day cough/whooping cough and symptoms very similar so I am now wondering whether this is what we have.

For me the cough is better at night, some better than others, still feel tired during the day (nodding off in bath) but slowly getting better.

I'm the same as you, my cough wasn't bad at night - which is odd because with most viruses it does really ramp up at night. It was mainly worse in the morning, although sometimes all day.

I had whooping cough as a child, it was horrible.

I'm at 3 weeks 5 days and I am finally seeing some progress. I've coughed less in the past 3 days, and I haven't had an episode of breathlessness since the weekend, so have reduced my asthma steroid inhaler back to normal dosage. Covid is definitely the weirdest virus I've ever had. With other viruses I've never had to increase my inhaler use for more than a few days.

@loulamay if you've had this horrible virus since Christmas it's unlikely you would still be testing positive on an LFT. So it could have been Covid, although there are other horrible coughing viruses around.

I tested on day 4 and got a positive. I'm 65 and had the Covid vaccination in October, I assume it would have been even worse otherwise!

Hope everyonelse feels better soon!

loulamay · 16/01/2024 10:49

@Mustardfan that's the same meds the GP gave me - are they having any effect? Do you have a link to the journal article please? I really really don't want to have silent reflux because we love our coffee, spicy food and wine!!!

loulamay · 16/01/2024 11:20

@everythingisgoingup - yes, he was a young Dr and I think he was maybe covering his bases haha. I think the chest x-ray is a standard precaution after having a cough for so long - he seemed to think it was possible that I'd had pneumonia and not known about it. I just hate hospitals and not looking forward to it.

MillicentRogers · 16/01/2024 11:23
Walkingwashingmachine · 16/01/2024 18:20

As well as whooping cough going round my area, people have Influenza Type A which has developed into pneumonia in some people. Annoyingly my husband, who was almost the other side of the Christmas virus has now picked up another different cough!! Which means I will get that due to my current weedy immune system just as I am feeling better from the Christmas flu. TYPICAL!!!

The most annoying thing is appearing perfectly fine when talking to people, until you laugh by mistake which sparks off a mad, unstoppable coughing fit like someone who is on 50 B&H a day. People recoil in horror. Terribly embarrassing.

I hear you regarding the cough, it catches you out 😂

Iffy when you have a dodgy pelvic floor 😞

Walkden · 16/01/2024 20:01

"So many people have it!

What is happening with the viruses 🦠?"

Well it could be all the viruses have changed but seems more likely that immune systems have changed due a particular virus so infections are harder to clear more likely to develop complications etc.

lljkk · 16/01/2024 20:30

.... or people need to be frequently exposed to the same viruses to keep up high resistance to them, and by shutting ourselves off from others a lot of time for a few years, our resistance declined so now we pay the price by being highly susceptible to everything ... until we all get used to the germs and have high resistance again.

I'm nursing my own 5 week cough, so sympathies !

Evenstar · 16/01/2024 23:24

Started coughing again tonight ☹️ I had about three days after finishing a course of antibiotics before it started again. Someone at my church has had two courses of steroids, inhalers (they’re not even asthmatic) and is now on their second course of antibiotics and still coughing. Her doctor thinks it may have been whooping cough.

everythingisgoingup · 17/01/2024 07:26

Evenstar sorry to hear about your cough.

It seems it does come a day go, we thought whopping cough too.

Nasty virus 🦠

OP posts:
CappelliBand · 17/01/2024 07:33

It was 8 weeks for me. Bloody exhausting.

The only saving grace was that it didn’t actually get worse and turn into a chest infection, but frustrating nonetheless.

It faded only when I came down with another virus!

SmallestInTheClass · 17/01/2024 14:45

@evenstar sorry to hear that. I have heard a lot about whooping cough this year. I have had the whooping noise sometimes when coughing but not consistently.@CappelliBand glad you finally got through it, some hope for us!
I'm now at 3 weeks, first few days I wasn't too bad but then tickly cough which has now turned chesty. I seem to have a day feeling a little better, then two steps back the next day. Awful sleep last night, coughing every time I was just about asleep. Throat is feeling swollen today, and voice is croaky. I'm guessing it's viral and haven't got a fever so probably not worth speaking to the GP. Another day of feet up in front of the TV for me.

orangetriangle · 17/01/2024 19:05

I know someone that is on their third lot of antibiotics back to back after the last bout I'm not going out until it warms up luckily I can stay in as I work from home minus 5 here tonight

Beeinalily · 22/01/2024 20:07

Like @SmallestInTheClass , one step forward and two steps back. I'm not coughing too badly now, but I feel so weak and depressed.

SmallestInTheClass · 22/01/2024 20:11

Ended up at the GP last week, suspected Whooping cough/100 day cough. Also had a chest infection so antibiotics for that rather than the cough. Back to about where I was this time last week. Whooping cough estimated to typically have 6 weeks of the really bad cough. Three weeks down, three weeks to go. Really hope it isn't 100 days.
