Any tips on breathing anyone?

lilibet · 16/06/2008 13:44

Nice to have another newbie Flier!

Have you seen the podcats on the OP?

wheelybug · 16/06/2008 14:09

Glad you found us Flier !

I run when dd is at nursery otherwise i would struggle as DH is out about 7am and in about 9-10pm so I do sympathise !!

Here's a beginner to 10k 12 week plan in case that helps. But I have to say, once i got to being able to run 5k quite happily I was able to make bigger jumps in distance. I found it easier going from 5-10k than 0-5K.

Flier · 16/06/2008 14:22

hi lilibet, unfortunately I don't have an ipod/mp3 player.

wheelybug thanks, have printed it out for a look.

lilibet · 16/06/2008 14:53

Wheeley - it does say on that one that you should only strech after your run not before

electricbarbarella · 16/06/2008 16:22

Hi Flier, welcome.
Lilibet, i started later than the other ladies as i had an operation at xmas so I think it was about the end of Feb.
It really does change that quickly. The race was the most fanbtastic feeling asnd dh was joking that he never ever thought he would be driving me to a run.

Flier · 16/06/2008 17:23

thanks, and congrats on your run

lilibet · 16/06/2008 19:35

oh dear - I am very

We went out again tonight, dh, ds2 and I.

My calf felt a bit stiff at first, but by the time it came to the third minute's running I wanted to die.

I was going so slowly that you could have passed me walking. At the end of teh fourth minute my legs (both of them this time) were killing me, so I walked the rest of teh way - that's less than I did last time.

I have had a bit of a cry ( I may be premenstrual, but then again I may just be moody and bad tmepered!) because I just feel like this fat old woman who can't even manage week one.

Dh is lovely and hugged me a lot and said that at least I am trying. He thinks that i may need new shoes so we are going at lunchtime tomorrow for both of us.

Dh managed the whole thing - this is someone who hasn't done any exercise since school and who won't join in the boys' football training for fear of collapsing in a heap - and most of the other dads do join in. He was truly knackered tho'!

and before you start thinking he is wonderful - he is now doing his best to persuade me to pizza and wine and offering gin!!

He says it's to cheer me up

wheelybug · 16/06/2008 19:42

Lilibet - don't be sad. You're doing great because you are still running ! Your DH is probably right about shoes - I think you said yours were really ancient. Get some new shoes and get back out there. If you have to stay on a level because you're not ready to go to the next week it doesn't matter - you're doing this for yourself and its not a race (ha ha). Even if you are a fat old woman, keep going you'll soon be a fit fab woman and then you'll be grinning from ear to ear like this ----> .

Report back on shoe purchasing (I really need to go and do this too).

LadyJogsAlot · 16/06/2008 19:42

lilibet, i'm proud of you
get your body used to doing a bit of exercise first and then worry about reducing the calorie intake.

Furball · 16/06/2008 21:44

I came down after putting ds to bed at 8pm and said 'think I'll go out for a quick run' followed by 'unbelivable really to expect me to ever say that!' did 5 km.

lilibet - you can do it, we were all like you just after christmas. Think positively at least you got up off the sofa and got out. very soon, you will be enjoying it!

shoes may make a big difference. When i started in Jan I was just wearing my 'ordinary' trainers and by mid Feb I could hardly walk up and down stairs as my knees were so bad, although after about 10 mins runing they started to ease off. I went to a 'proper' running shop mid week and was there for 1 1/2 hours, have nevr had such fab service! Apparantly I have quite high insteps so needed shoes with extra support which I got and my knees have been fine ever since. Dont give up, you'll get there in the end! By the way I've never listened to the podcasts that started this thread off, but I do have MP3 player to listen to while I run!

Itsthawooluff · 16/06/2008 22:45

Hi Lilibet, I'll own up that it took me three weeks to do week one. I felt like such a failure, and thought I must be a complete blob if I couldn't even do the starting point runs BUT it does get better I promise you - really truly.

Now I'm a cantankerous, grouchy, bitch mother from hell because I haven't run for at least 15 minutes this week, due to an injury. DH and DC are praying for me to start again soon

Flier · 17/06/2008 07:50

well i made a proper start last night, on the running machine. I already do walking on the school run and with our dog, so I did 10mins where i ran for 1min and walked for 1min, then ran for 2min walked for 1min for the next 10mins.

I'm intending getting up early tomorrow morning and get a run/walk in then - looking forward to it

electricbarbarella · 18/06/2008 18:14

well done.

Furball · 18/06/2008 21:33

hey wooluffy - get yourself over here

OP posts:
lilibet · 19/06/2008 09:13

The rain stopped us from going out last night, it was torrential here - my nice neew hanging baskets blew down.

Hopefully will get out tonight to see if I can get better than four out of eight minutes running!

wheelybug · 19/06/2008 10:22

Well done Flier and good luck tonight Lilibet.

I've had a bad week so far with running - dd has been ill so up a lot in the night for a few nights and then off nursery so I did manage to get out Monday but was just planning my route yesterday when I was called to collect her. My parents are staying today and tomorrow though so hopefully i might be able to slope off for a quickie...

(Further good news on the weight loss, increasing my distance and eating less is working wonders am now on 1 st, 4 lbs lost ).

lilibet · 19/06/2008 10:53

Well done!

How overweight were you?

Flier · 19/06/2008 11:22

well I didn't get out for my ,orning run yesterday, as dh decided to go for a cycle, so I went out last night in the torential rain! Still enjoyed it though, but didn't feel that I did too well.

I decided to basically follow the 10k in 12 weeks program, as was to do walk 10mins run 3mins x2, the first 3mins running was ok, but the final one Ithink i only managed about 1.5mins My problem seems to be breathing when running, I can't seemto breathe through my nose and end up running out of puff to soon as I'm breathing out my mouth.

Any tips on breathing anyone?

Congrats on your weight loss, wheelybug, you must be really chuffed with yourself

annieapple7 · 19/06/2008 11:22

Hi everyone
May i join? I did a 5K Race for Life a few years back and can run for about 20 minutes (well jog really). I need some motivation and something to aim for because I can't usually go for a run until after about 7.30 by which time I am shattered and reaching for a bottle of beer instead...

I also want to lose a stone, and running helps curb my appetite and feeling my belly judder makes me want to get rid of it more!

I have 2 questions - Bramblebrooks - how does the Nike trainer/ipod thing work? My trainers say that they are ipod compatible or something - what does that mean?

And, stretching - when do you do it? I only do it when I get back - is this right? I often get pain in my hips after running too. I try to avoid running on roads but it is impossible unless I want to take the car and run on the sand dunes (horrid!)

Flier · 19/06/2008 11:24

hello annieapple, welcome, I've just started too.

solarpoweredbarbarella · 19/06/2008 11:26

Annie, come on in, You don't actually think that any of us run (as aposed to jog) do you? 20mins is really impressive it took us quite a while to be up to that.
I tend not to do any stretching although I do yoga wekkly so I think that helps, I also have pain in my hips a lot.
This weekend I will have my first run as a no smoker. I wonder if it will be easier.

Itsthawooluff · 19/06/2008 11:27

Hi Annie! [waves]

Furball - am even grouchier now as will miss meetup, but missing out on puddings probably good idea. Will take sad sack carcass for run, even if little , little one tomorrow - or otherwise I will be unbearable.

lilibet · 19/06/2008 20:21

well we went!

And I did it!!!

I had to stop two or three times to strech my leg where it was sore but not for more than a couple of minutes and I did every run!!

I am very proud of myself and am hoping to do it next time with less stops.

I know that I'm not ready yet but how do you kow when you are ready to move onto the next stage.

It was so wonderful hearing him say "last 20 seconds"

I think I may be in lurve!!
