I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Sorry, I didn't realise this was a closed group, I won't post again

misdee · 23/01/2008 09:24

peacemaker, sorry didnt see your post further down. this isnt a closed group at all, but i dont know the answer to your question as i really am a beginner, and have never run before. there is another mumsnet runners thread and someone over there might be able to answer your question. but do feel free to join in here.

peacemaker, about your knees, they sound similar to mine, although mine have only just started hurting (at the end of wk 2 of this programme)- someone suggested it was anterior knee pain, v common, there's lots of info on the web. Went to work yesterday and could hardly walk after a day at my desk. I'm going to the GP today for a proper diagnosis, maybe you should too. Good luck.

Minum · 23/01/2008 09:55

Furball - I always love that too - being in a sleeveless top when everyone else is dressed in lots of layers

Just got back from week 3, run 3. Need to do more on the stretching I think, currently I only do a minute before I start, but I need to up it. Will do week 3 once again on Friday, before moving up.

peacemakeruk · 23/01/2008 10:18

ok, thanks, I'll try on the other thread.

FillyjonkisCALM · 23/01/2008 10:38

lol ticky

I haven't even packed a bag or bought chocolate or ANYTHING

I haven't even knitted ANYTHING for this baby, mainly because I cannot decide whether baby hats should have absurdly huge pompoms or not (I am leaning towards yes)

I am in complete denial really, but I DO plan to give birth at some point before I turn into an elephant.

TooTicky · 23/01/2008 19:21

They should have long pixie points
Pompoms optional.

misdee · 23/01/2008 20:36

SparklyGothKat · 23/01/2008 20:44

LadyThingFishAlot · 23/01/2008 20:56

good luck ladies! i'm sure you will do well. when is it?

misdee · 23/01/2008 20:57

24th feb. so just over a month away.

i just really dont know how far 3k is to actually run, so this will give me an idea of how far it is.

OP posts:
LadyThingFishAlot · 23/01/2008 21:05

wow! 3k. it's the same as the race for life one then. it's longer than i thought it would be. not to worry you though!

misdee · 23/01/2008 21:11

if i have to do the walk-run-walk-run on the day i am not worried.

OP posts:
LadyThingFishAlot · 23/01/2008 21:15

you'll be fine

tortoise · 23/01/2008 21:21

Wow well done Misdee and SGK.

Hopefully i can go out tomorrow to jog. Chest is still a bit tight so i will take it a bit easier to start with.

pinkspottywellies · 23/01/2008 21:45

Race for Life is 5k Fish which is 3 miles. I did about 3k on my first week's first run Misdee - I went out after and measured it in the car!

TooT!!!! Are you joining us?! Yay! My knees hurt too but I kind of ignore it. Lots of us are doing interval training with a podcast (on mp3 player) which is fab. I didn't think I'd even manage the first session but I'm doing ok on week 3 now I tend to go running under cover of darkness with a big hat on (I say I'm off to rob the post office!) to cover the embarassment! I wish I was running if I see anyone on the walking bits cause I think I must look like a loser just walking round in the dark in my trainers with my iPod and my hat on!! I have been beeped at twice now by drivers! I just like to think they're saying 'good on you, keep it up' (rather than 'haha you buffoon')

Good luck with the fun run Misdee and SGK!

Peacemaker sorry not to respond. Also didn't know the answer to your question. Mose of us are complete beginners. Hope you found some help.

TooTicky · 23/01/2008 22:39

Admittedly I haven't done proper running since secondary school (used to like 800m) but when I do do a sprint for school or a bus or something I tend to start off fine then all of a sudden one of my knees will go OW and I have to stop.
I have had bad knee phases before, usually in cold/wet weather, but not so much now - hooray for homeopathy! It's just this sudden ow stop thing.

LadyJogsAlot · 24/01/2008 08:54

ahhhh, thanks pinksspottywellies. i was confused!

LadyJogsAlot · 24/01/2008 19:51

right, just off on my jog.
anyone else?

pinkspottywellies · 24/01/2008 20:24

Just been. That was hard (that's a puffed out red face!)

TooT are you going to start? I have bad knees but this training is really steady progression so you might find it doesn't strain you too much.

MrsCarrot · 24/01/2008 20:32

I have been three times now and after yesterday my knees and my neck really ache. I'm not following the programme, just running with a friend so I'm not sure how far we go but it's for around 40 mins although some of that is fast walking for now.

Are you supposed to carry on despite knees? I have proper trainers and try to land heel first.

pinkspottywellies · 24/01/2008 21:10

When we did some running in my exercise class a while ago my knee hurt for a couple of weeks then when I actually looked at it it was swollen quite a lot. The doctor gave me anti-inflamms and told me not to run for a while. It's not as swollen at the minute but I might go to the running shop and see if I can get an arch support or something.

LadyJogsAlot · 24/01/2008 21:14

phew.
mrs carrot, i'm not following the programme thingy either. just jogging for a few mins then walking for a few.

it was much easier today and i didn't fall over

misdee and sparkly, i sponsored you both 2 quid. sorry it wasn't more but at least it's got you on your way eh?!
