I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I'm not doing anything yet, my cold has settled on my chest and I am all wheezes. Realistically, I probably won't actually start until September or something. Unless dd2 and I can come to some kind of arrangement - think she'd be a bit too joggly on my back.

ptangyangkipperbang · 25/01/2008 10:30

Have just got back from week two, run two. How windy is it out there?! Really hard going running into the wind, I think I was actually jogging on the spot for some of it. Thought it would be easy getting back as the wind would blow me along but it suddenly dropped. Still finding it quite hard going but Rome wasn't built in a day...

Madlentileater · 25/01/2008 10:43

re knees- GP confirmed my knee thing is anterior knee pain, caused by my feet rolling inwards, hence knees out of alignment- he said not to run till recovered, use painkillers, keep mobile, and then get inserts for trainers to correct feet. He also showed me an exercise, kind of 'sitting' against the wall, which should strengthen the muscles joining the inside thight to knee. So now I can't run and am feeling v frustrated and a bit sorry for myself

LadyJogsAlot · 25/01/2008 11:05

oh lentileater, that's a pita. can you do some fast wlking instead?

Madlentileater · 25/01/2008 11:21

even walking hurts (sniff)...just off to do some now...

misdee · 25/01/2008 22:18

Hello.

Sorry for just lurking before. I used you links and didn't even post. shame. Still now is everyone now running miles and miles and ever so fit and slim?

I am not. But I am trying!

SparklyGothKat · 25/01/2008 22:26

I just plotted my run area and discovered that I actually cover 2 miles. I am shocked..

JudgeNutmeg · 25/01/2008 22:44

College finished early yesterday so I flitted off to the gym for the third run of week two. My legs felt sooooooo heavy. Maybe I should stick to morning runs.

I found this week generally easier so I'm hopeful that week three will be ok. Stay well everyone!

misdee · 26/01/2008 09:14

well i got my BHF race pack this morning, my t-shirt is XL, hopefully next year i can put down for a s/m one lol.

Went out this morning, and had a fantastic run, the sun was bouncing off the river, and it felt like all was well with the world. It was Week3, run4, so I will start Week4 on Monday.

Had a rubbish day Friday, I couldnt find DS1's MP3 player which I use for running, and couldnt face going without my prop guide. It put me in a foul mood all day, I had massive row with DH (it was nothing to do with him, but ). I feel so much happier now I've been out this morning, and bought myself an MP3 player, so I have a backup, am I an addict?

wordgirl · 26/01/2008 14:41

I have done my last session of Week 3 today and have just had a look at what I have to do next week and there's NO WAY I can do that! Is it just me or is that quite a big step up? It had all been quite nice and gradual up to now.
Think I will repeat Week 3 as I'm still struggling a bit with the 3 min runs

Minum · 26/01/2008 16:25

I'm doing each week 4 times, as I feel I need to, I'm going to give week4 a shot on Monday, but I agree 5 mins is a bit scary

wheelybug · 26/01/2008 16:29

I did week 2 run 2 yesterday so need to fit in run 3 tomorrow. Its ok but not sure about upping it next week.

I too tracked my course and found I am doing 2.5 miles (I end up finishing the podcast a bit before I'm back) so although its walk/run it makes me think I'll manage 3 miles by 18 May when my Run for life is.

I can't remember if I said beofre but I got my Ipod shuffle and it makes such a difference even though th epodcast isn't my sort of music and the guy's voice is quite irritating but it definitely helps !

misdee · 26/01/2008 18:15

minum, i think i am gettingaddicted to this. each time i run i'm going'its killing me i cant do this' but the rush when i finish each session is so so good.

hopefully my new shuffle will be here monday, as i feel lost without my ipod.

i'm just bumping this... am thinking of purchasing a sports bra.

Furball · 27/01/2008 07:32

aitch - you can get them for £5 from Tescos or Sainsburys if your local ones do clothes

Aitch · 27/01/2008 10:57

i don't really have a local, local supermarket... there's a fancy-shcmanzy running shop down the road though. my pal's a runner and she's insistent i get a shock absorber one. is it not necessary? they're expensive...

Furball · 27/01/2008 13:21

I would get one aitch - you don't want them bouncing around really. I wear a soft cup bra with a crop top over the top so they are secured what with gravity and breastfeeding, I need to keep them as far north as possible

Furball · 27/01/2008 13:22

finished week 2 this morning - dh completely surprised when I announced 'I'm just popping out for a run' - found it hard though but am up for week 3.

wheelybug · 27/01/2008 16:58

Me too furball ! I completed week 2 today as well. Slightly daunted by the thought of week 3 but up for it. Can't start till wednesday though.

Hope everyone is doing ok !

ivykaty44 · 27/01/2008 17:15

Hello everyone - you all are doing really well.

I have managed three times this week and todays run was the best - I think early morning runs are far better somehow? perhaps I am still asleep and don't notice...that I am actually running!

I managed 3 miles this morning running for 31 mins and 9 mins of walking so was really pleased with myself

(slowly we get there, last september if someone had asked me to run for 3 mins that would have done me in - big heaps on the floor time - so feeling somewhat happy)

pinkspottywellies · 27/01/2008 19:26

Oh no. I've just looked at week 4 and it's quite daunting isn't it!! I did actually add 2mins at the end of yesterday's last jog (making it 5) so that I'd get home! But you get much less walking time in week 4

Oh well, I can but try! I always jog quite slowly the first session of each week so I can gague it, then ramp it up a notch for the next one.

Aitch · 27/01/2008 20:05

oh GOD. i've bought an ipod shuffle and a shock absorber bra... i've already got a good pair of runners. i'm going to have to do this tomorrow, amn't i? please btw, can anyone tell me how to get the podcasts onto the shuffle?
