For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page.

Possum...it's really about natural foods,no animal products...so largely grain,vegetable,bean,nut,seed,sea vegetable,fruit based.

MrsCarrot · 17/10/2007 11:32

Mmmm, I could just eat a fishfinger sandwich, on ciabatta with mizuna leaves, cherry tomatoes, red onion, a littlee mayonnnaise, black pepper and a squeeze of lemon.

CappuScreamO · 17/10/2007 11:34

Have now had a portion of melon, and there's bread dough rising, and soup on the stove. Get me and my smug domesticity. I think I do have to concur with Mrs C on the fish finger sandwich front, and that one does sound divine. Is this a vegetarian thread, by the way? I should probably shuffle off quietly if it is.

Hello Possum - no, name not Arabic - would that I were so exotic. It's a word I thought I heard my daughter say once, though she's never repeated it (still at the da da da stage, so what I thought I heard I have no idea), and I liked it and made it my username and blog name.

PossumIsMunchingPumpkins · 17/10/2007 11:58

LL, you new photos are sigh-inducing, you and your DS are beautiful

Habbibu, if it were 'Habbibi' that would mean 'my darling' or 'my sweetheart' in Arabic, I thought it might be a dialect derivation of that.

is macrobiotic synonymous with 'vegan' then?

Habbibu · 17/10/2007 12:01

Oh possum - how nice - we say habbibu to her all the time - think I'll change it to habbibi. Because she is!

PossumIsMunchingPumpkins · 17/10/2007 12:08

there are umpteen pop songs in the Middle East that seem to consist simply of 'Habbibi, habbibi, habbibi' sung in a variety of ways to a variety of electronic drum beats
Men will call each other 'habbibi' affectionately as well as women to each other, their children etc. It's like calling someone 'love', a generally happy and jolly term.

Lullabyloo · 17/10/2007 12:10

Possum...I guess being macrobiotic is about a whole way of life & being...not just the dietry bits

we are a funny household
dh is a fitness fanatic who eats utter crap
ds eats everything & anything but aspires to being a grown up man so he can eat pizza, crisps & drink yucky beer
my mother bought, cooked & served up plastic packet supermarket food & with her I ate tat
my grandmother walked 20 miles a day,practiced yoga,grew her own fruit & veg,baked bread,made stews & soup etc...
such a mixed bunch.....but good to see either side of the fence

I have never eaten a fish finger
ds has never eaten a fish finger
when we came back from Cornwall & all it's sea fayre..we went to a friends for tea...asked what he would like to eat ,ds replied 'scallops please'.........met with a face from friend & 'well,I can do you fishfingers if that's any good'

ds looked mournfully at the fishfingers ,ate his vegetables & announced he was reeeeeeeaaalllly full..with much tummy rubbing & groaning.

Lullabyloo · 17/10/2007 12:11

habbibi is a lovely word

PossumIsMunchingPumpkins · 17/10/2007 12:13

LL, this is your grandma who is now 90 and totally amazing?

I like very much the idea of this macrobiotic thingy
(says a vain Possum who would rather not look 90 when only in mid thirties)

Lullabyloo · 17/10/2007 12:16

yes possum that's the one

& she has promised me that she is never ever going to die........so that suits me just fine

we went to a naturopathic clinic together when I was 18...after initial health tests ,I was put in the lowest strain of exercise pool & fitness classes & she was in the highest..

SauerKraut · 17/10/2007 12:17

Me too, we eat a lot of the stuff anyway. I have meant to look into macrobiotic stuff ever since I was 10 and an Italian language assistant came to stay with us and cooked the most amazing food for herself in our kitchen!

Lullabyloo · 17/10/2007 12:38

hmmm.....avi.....ds is 3.3....he will still, by choice..have 2hrs sleep every afternoon
When we are out for the day,on hols etc..if running about ,distracted & out in the fresh air he will just about make it through....with a huge slump at 5pm...tears,too tired to eat etc
If at home,in the car,indoors anywhere...he sleeps...for 2 hrs

bedtime is still normal time, but often I go in & he's still awake at 10pm .....Should I just leave things until he chooses to quit the sleep himself? He usually does quit things of his own accord........I'm just not sure what to do really

fullmoonfiend · 17/10/2007 13:07

hello melon-munchers!
Don't worry, not of us are veggies or even wholefood devotees. I find that on average I don't make the magic 10 portions, but the fact that I am trying, means at least I am hitting at least 6 or 7 a day. Whereas, left to my own devices, I would sometimes struggle to hit 5 And I also found after a while I would automatically reach for fruit to snack on instead of cake, biscuits or processed snack options. Though as cake is part of my religion, there is always room in my life for cake...

I am preparing for boot camp with a weekday alcohol ban (am spending a king's ransome on pomegranite juice...drool)

Today I have had apples, melon, banana, tomato and veg soup for lunch. tonight will be pasta bake with fridge clear-out sauce

Lullabyloo · 17/10/2007 13:09

lol at fridge clear out sauce

my postman doesn't love me anymore....the post still hasn't come

Habbibu · 17/10/2007 13:17

hello fmf, and thanks. I was feeling a little sheepish! Much as I think LL's granny sounds fabulous (am a bit envious there), I don't think I'm quite cut out for that route. Funny, though, what childhood eating does for you, isn't it? We ate good homecooked food all the time - plain, but fresh and really nice, very few puddings, and my mum was the queen of the wonderful overstuffed sandwich.

I can see why you'd want to change quite dramatically from "tat", LL, especially with such a great role model as your grandmother. Is she on the paternal side? And I think your son will grow up, eat pizza and drink beer for a bit, wonder what the fuss was all about and go back to proper food!

Lovely soup for lunch (onions, turnip, butternut squash, carrot, potato and coriander) and little habbibi (one tomorrow) ate a whole bowl! Now we have to get final ingredients for her birthday cake. If it goes to plan I will post a picture.

I like this thread very much already - thank you, lovely people!

I spent a slightly arduous morning doing something that I realised, as soon as I got home, that I could have done online in about 5 minutes.
