Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

When I spoke the doctor today he said the reassuring news is your bloods are great and cancer markets are absolutely fine so we know nothing terrible is going on.
He asked if I have pain, which I don't. My voice also hasn't changed. I just feel like I have a massive lump of mucus that I cant bloody shift. I've tried steroid sprays, Fexofenadine, acid reflux tablets. I dont have any pain other than the occasional pain behind my eye which I've heard can be linked to sinuses. I've had my eyes checked as I have periods of ocular migraines.

Sorry to hear that

Oh its horrible tonight. I've really started to worry and now I'm convinced I have soreness and trouble swallowing (I cant feel something when I swallow but don't have trouble swallowing)

Take antihistamines

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 21:02

Thats what the Fexofenadine is. Hasnt done a thing. And I've tried other ones before being put on a prescription one one

It will be because you are thinking about it so much, I can read something and then all of a sudden I’ve got those symptoms. Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long for you’re appointment

My health anxiety has kicked in after the 'C' word

Try going very low carb for a week. I swear you'll notice a difference.

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 21:20

Really?

Hi OP I've just found your post and I really resonate with it. Since lockdown I've been on the phone to the doctors numerous times about a lump in my throat. Without seeing me they have diagnosed me with Globus and because no one has had a look I swing from it being cancer to thyroid problems (massive health anxiety too). I know it's not because I only really feel it after certain foods or when I'm thinking about it or anxious (which is a lot lately, but there are some points in the day I don't notice it)

I am surprised at how common this is actually. I felt like the only one in the world.

I hope you are ok OP. Are you seeking help for your anxiety alongside this?

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 21:33

I was treated for anxiety for a longtime with pregabalin. I forgot to add them to my tablet organiser and lets just say I went downhill fast. The withdrawals were horrendous. I then learned you are not to come off them like that. It wasn't intentional but the withdrawals scared me so much I refused to go back on them and just got them out my system. So at the moment I have no medication for my anxiety.

My anxiety is mostly health related and this ongoing is not helping. And lately my worries have been constant.

Globus has been mentioned to me. Its driving me mad though

I had a very similar complaint not too long ago, and I had thrush! Candida all down my oesophagus, easily treated. I was also worried about it being cancer. I had no symptoms of thrush in my mouth at all so I was very surprised.

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 21:53

Oh really. May I ask was you physically seen? How were you diagnosed? Maybe referring to it as a lump is wrong of me, but its the sensation of like a lump in my throat, though I cant feel anything when I touch my next. It feels like thick mucous but its honestly doing my head in now. Had it since the end of March

I had very similar - ENT stuck a camera up my nose and then down ( really not pleasant ), saw something, I had a general anaesthetic to have a proper look and biopsy and it was nothing - a benign cyst. So please don't panic. I do sympathise - it's such an unpleasant sensation.

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 22:14

Its the camera I am scared about. And if they see something well the thought makes me feel sick alone

I get all the symptoms you describe. Mine is IBS. I used to take Lazoprazole daily. It's stress, when I was furloughed I was completely well, no IBS symptoms at all, as soon as I went back to work, it all came back.

Youngatheart00 · 17/06/2020 22:52

I’ve had the camera up nose / down throat thing and whilst it’s not pleasant, it really isn’t so bad. You can ask your GP to prescribe diazepam or similar ahead of it if you’re anxious. And you’ll be one step closer to resolving the issue! Take reassurance from your clear blood tests, that’s a massive sign that there’s nothing sinister going on.

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 23:12

I have IBS too.

Mine has been from since the schools were closed. Though I have had the feeling of being congested in my throat for weeks before that following a really bad cold. It took so long to pass but the blocked feeling in my throat never really went. But since lockdown began this sensation hasnt gone away. It does feel like it gets worse with worry. I hate how my mind can imagine up things. But I did say to the doctor today, the only reason I'm wanting to be seen is because the worry now is getting to me.

I am still furloughed and not sure if my job still remains. I am a lone parent so these last few months have been hard, especially as my son has struggled massively and has had to have his ASD referrals pushed through. Money has also been tight and our dog has been very unwell and has cost me near enough two months of my furloughed pay!!! Then there been my dad who's been unwell for some time. So I've not been short of worrying.

I hope its anxiety but I wish i could take control of it

I agree with Hollow . Try cutting out bread completely and go low carb. That’s what the problem is for me.

SpideyMom · 18/06/2020 00:00

did it just come on?

Proudnana3 · 18/06/2020 08:19

Are you still feeling sick and when you swallow does it taste like mucus? My doctor told me if he was concerned about it being anything nasty he would have me straight down to ENT but really doesn’t THINK it is, he agreed to have a look to try and reassure me but I think the damage was already to set in my thoughts. I had bad allergies and maybe acid reflux in the beginning but all the meds sorted that out but just never got rid of the sensation in my throat it never bothers me at night now the acid feeling has gone. Also my sensation moves around from side to side and middle which I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing. Also do you get any relief when you are eating?

SpideyMom · 18/06/2020 08:53

Mine doesnt move. It is always in the same place. Eating isn't usually an issue however bread and cake can feel abit different. Like its moving down slower.
I have spoken to a few doctors about it now and none are really worried. So I'm only being referred as I can still feel it, so its just to see what's going on.
I worry though massively. You hear how some people don't have any other symptoms of serious illnesses, and it only gets found at routine appointments or after a persisting minor symptom being checked out.
I still feel the sensation heightens when worrying which is constant at the moment.
Last night was really bad. I kept needing to burp and it felt like the air was pushing past something. Ive never wanted something to be in my head so much.

I know someone who experienced the same thing due to stress, he had lots of investigation and no underlying cause was found, and it did go eventually. Try not to fixate on it so much, I know that’s not easy when you are in pain & worried, but you could be making things worse for yourself. Does anything help? Like sucking ice pops, ice cream or a hot drink. I hope you feel a lot better soon. Good luck.

Proudnana3 · 18/06/2020 09:17

You do sound so much like me, I get something and immediately think the worse, I do it with my kids as well, I then google everything which always comes back to the big c. However if you read the symptoms for all the different throat cancers they don’t really match up, my daughter in laws sister had thyroid cancer and had a visible lump on her throat no feeling inside, she absolutely fine now after treatment. I saw an article on Globus were it was described as feeling like a piece of skin in you’re throat, I’ve always said sometimes when mine is in the middle it feels like a wet crisp is stuck so I think that sounds like the same thing, other description is a feeling of mucus you can’t clear. I often wonder if some of the sensation in the throat is normal but I’ve become over sensitive to it now. The Amitriptyline has helped my anxiety but I don’t think I will truly get over this until I get it checked out properly, I think most doctors under normal circumstances send their patients to ent with these symptoms as they know that if it’s in the mind it’s the only way to help them and it will also pick up acid reflux. Remember doctors deal with this all the time and they know the real danger signs to look out for. I find chewing gum also helps even though I hate the stuff. You do sound like you are having an extra rough time, I hope you’re dog is ok now , ours did her critical ligament this time last year and it cost thousands, insurance only covered 75% as she was over 9, it was heartbreaking to watch her go through it.

Proudnana3 · 18/06/2020 09:25

Roselilly you are absolutely right when you say try not to fixate as that is defiantly what happens and the more you do the worse it gets and so on it’s a vicious circle

SpideyMom · 18/06/2020 09:30

He is OK now thank you. But he couldn't have timed it any worse lol. His is no longer insurable due to his age and breed. His premium rocketed and he has multiple health issues excluded so very little is covered anyway. But very very bad timing as the costs just kept spiralling
