Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

I thought I had a fish bone stuck in my throat a while ago and go sent me up to hospital. Turned out to be a tonsil stone. Ask someone to shine a light down your throat and press your tongue down (I use a new emery board!) to see if there’s anything stuck in your tonsils. As soon ah the doctor removed it’s the feeling went!
Try garbling With salt water on your tonsils

SpideyMom · 05/05/2020 13:47

thank you for all the advice.

It's everytime I eat. It's just clicked (I know that sounds silly as i've had it for so long). Dont judge me, ive been so busy but up until 1pm today I have only had some fresh orange juice, a coffee and a pint of water. My diet isn't the best in that I dont eat regular meals. I eat when I am hungry, so everyday for as long as I can rememeber never consists of breakfast lunch and dinner. Anyway, whilst doing my sons lunch I ate a little jaffa cake bar. The feeling has come on within minutes so its definitely when I eat

Then it's probably acid reflux. It can't be cured with just a course of meds, it's a long term issue that needs your input.

The GERD diet will help your tubes to heal but you need to give it a month and then reintroduce foods slowly to see what triggers it and raising the head of your bed so you're not lying flat will stop the reflux when you're re asleep. Along with the meds. It took me months to get on top of it and I still can't sleep lying flat.

gamerchick · 05/05/2020 18:19

Which means no more orange juice for a while.

gamerchick · 05/05/2020 18:21

Or coffee or chocolate.

Miserable it is but has to be done if you want some peace.

SpideyMom · 05/05/2020 21:55

Oh god Coffee. Really

OP posts:
gamerchick · 05/05/2020 22:28

Its just a month. Let yourself heal a bit.

Have you looked at the GERD diet? There's a list of stuff you need to cut out for a few weeks.

gamerchick · 05/05/2020 22:30

Or you could wait until the chest pain stage in the middle of the night like I did and get carted off to a&e with suspected heart issues. That was fun.

SpideyMom · 05/05/2020 23:07

I'm going to call my GP tomorrow. Night time is the worst

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 06:31

Definitely calling my GP. Had 3 hours sleep and have a burning sensation around my belly button area now and feeling very sick

So the doctor has made me feel shit. His actual words were no one is going to help you here but you need to learn to live with it. He said Gaviscon works like the lansoprazole tablets I've been taking so wants me to try omeprazole. His is also posting me out a blood form to make sure there is 'nothing nasty' in my body.
I mean really. His use of vocabulary is awful Sad

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 09:09

His actually just called back and gone over everything again and given me more medication. Maybe he knew he was out of order

OP posts:
gamerchick · 06/05/2020 09:27

But technically he's right, nobody can help you but you.
You need to take some responsibility for it.

I take omeprazole , I've reintroduced most foods but there are some I'll never be able to eat again. Same as lying flat for sleep.

But until you make changes, you'll carry on suffering.

Good luck.

SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 09:34

I get what you are saying but this is a doctor who will sit there and tell you a certain referaĺl costs the NHS so much money so he wont be sending you for those tests etc. This doctor is really abrupt in all his consultations, and in my opinion he should not be telling a patient 'I am going to send you for blood tests to make sure there is nothing nasty in your body.
None of the doctors so far have spoken to me about removing foods from my diet and not sleeping flat etc. So yes I agree I need to make these changes but being told no one can help you and you have to learn to live with it isnt the best way to address things

No they didn't with me either. After the endoscopy and being told what it was I had to do my own research. I don't think they like too, just like telling someone to lose weight to help a medical issue.

Initially I thought no chance and just decided to get on with it, until the chest pain thing happened.

But all in all, I no longer feel like there's something stuck in my throat when eating. You learn how to manage the trigger foods as long as you don't have them often. Tomatoes I wouldn't dare eat after lunchtime for e.g. I had to cut caffeine down to a minimum. Chocolate is fine though.

Ideally you need an endoscopy.

SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 10:46

I'm going to see what the blood tests show but start reducing down. I also need to stop eating after a certain time. Night time is awful so I tend to eat as a comfort but then the feeling gets worse.
The burning had starting but in my tummy. I actually feel sick

Have you any symptoms like weight loss, choking etc? It could be GERD but it could also be more serious. If it feels like you are being palmed off keep asking for more help. Another GP for a start!

I’ve got a relative who, after calling the pharmacist to ask if their symptoms were side effects of medication, was rushed into the medical practice for blood tests the same day and referred to gastroenterology in less than two weeks. In this lockdown. They seem concerned it could be oesophageal cancer despite the fact there is weight gain not loss. Very similar symptoms to you. As soon as it’s safe they have to have endoscopy. Two other people I know had the same symptoms and it was a thyroid problem and they had to have their thyroids removed. One of them in her early thirties.

gamerchick · 06/05/2020 11:00

I'd definitely push for an endoscopy. They're not as unpleasant as you imagine, the dude doing it told me straight away.

NameChange84 · 06/05/2020 11:00

Btw both the GP and Pharmacist said, prior to my relative’s blood test, “we need to rule out anything sinister”. I’m not sure if there is anything wrong with saying checking there is nothing nasty going on...for example Heliobacter Pylori is quite nasty and it may be they are looking at something like that?

Hope you get the answers you need soon! Sounds horrible to have to live with this.

gamerchick · 06/05/2020 11:42

Heliobacter Pylori is quite nasty and it may be they are looking at something like that?

Isn't that a stool sample job? That was fun.

SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 12:15

No weight loss. I've gained a little to be honest. I've no soreness, hoarseness or choking. I am able to eat and drink but the feeling is there like trapped phlegm in my throat.

I've started to worry now

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 13:51

I've looked in the back of my mouth. Cant see anything in my tonsils but its cover in stringy clear mucous (sorry tmi) my nose is stuffy and when I blow it although nothing comes out my ears are popping

OhWhatAPalaver · 06/05/2020 18:21

I had a month of lansoprazole recently due to terrible heartburn and the feeling that food wasn't going down properly. I changed my diet, stopped eating too close to bedtime (minimum two hours) and also bought a wedge pillow to sleep on. Be aware that after the lansoprazole your reflux may come back for a bit (mine did) but then it should settle. It's best to wean off lansoprazole gradually to avoid your stomach over producing acid when you do stop.
I still get heartburn and indigestion from time to time but I take it with gaviscon and try to figure out what I've eaten that's caused it. For me it was definitely diet related and exacerbated by stress.

OhWhatAPalaver · 06/05/2020 18:37

That should say 'tackle it with gaviscon' btw!

SpideyMom · 06/05/2020 20:01

I collected my medications earlier and spoke to the pharmacist about it. She didn't seem too concerned to be honest and suggested I try a decongestant syrup to see if it shifts the mucous in my throat
