Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

I would definitely try changing your diet. I had similar symptoms and was referred to ENT for an endoscope. Nothing to be seen aside from evidence of acid reflux so I was advised to avoid coffee, alcohol, fizzy drinks, tomatoes, onions, spicy food, chocolate and citrus fruits (all my fave foods!) The registrar said that I should gradually reintroduce them and work out what works for me. He also said you have to live your life so basically if you want to have some chocolate or a glass of wine, have one!

I was put on Omperozole which did nothing for me. The only thing that helped was taking aloe vera juice daily combined with the change in my diet. I can now eat most of the above foods with the exception of onions, fizzy drinks and some citrus fruits. It flares up now and again but nothing like before.

Good luck, I hope you manage to get rid of this uncomfortable feeling.

SpideyMom · 07/05/2020 08:50

It really is but it feels abit easier this morning. I've taken 3 lots the syrup so far, so I know its not alot but maybe mucus stuck there hasnt been helping things. My nose doesnt feel as blocked. However I will look into changing my diet as gutted as I am, as its everything I like lol.

Thanks for all your advice

Had an awful day today and felt it constantly even before I'd eaten anything. Luckily im not getting the burning but I went to be sick earlier and I swear it felt like whatever came up went around something in my throat. Obviously this has triggered me convincing myself that something is definitely there. I later ate a small fairy cake and I felt it when swallowing. It felt like cake was stuck.
I'm now lay here writing this and it feels like the nasal spray I have used is just sat on something in my throat.

I'm really really sick of this feeling now.

Oh spider mom you sound exactly like me, I have what feels like loads of backed up mucus in my throat causing nausea 24/7 pain over tummy button like gnawing sensation and have trouble swallowing such a lot, I’m going to look at the gerd diet that gamer chick advised, I would do anything to feel better, I’ve been on omperazole for months but I wasn’t told about any diet to follow, only to eat healthily, sorry to hear you have this also, but not being funny I’m glad someone else understands what it’s like

SpideyMom · 09/05/2020 13:46

I know what you mean @CambsAlways as much as it's not pleasant it's a relief to know someone else feels the same.

I was switched to omperazole the other day after spending around 5 weeks on lansoperazole. How are you finding it? It has only been this last week I've felt any discomfort with it where it kept me awake. I think sometimes, as I dont have many other symptoms other than the lump feeling in my throat I am struggling to accept its GERD however I will try anything to help improve this. No diet has been mentioned to me, not even told to eat healthy but I am making changes. The only persistent feeling is the lump in my throat. Anything else comes and goes.

I suspect anxiety is playing a huge part too. This started since the schools closed in March and I was put on leave. As safe as I am keeping us, with the current state of things going on I am naturally anxious although I dont feel overly. Maybe I just accept that's the way my life is now though constantly worrying about something. The feeling seems to get worse when my anxiety is heightened. We had a really expensive and upsetting Thursday, and my son is really struggling with his OCD/tics at the moment, so some days are quite difficult to motivate myself.

I agree it does feel like loads of trapped mucus. I started taking the Benylin Mucus Cough Plus recommended to me by the Pharmacist and it felt like it was getting thinner after only a few uses. So I'm really sad its feels like this again as I really hoped that was the answer. Last night I was really scared as it's the first time I've really felt it when swallowing. It felt like the fairy cake was trapped in the same part where the lump I feel is, and when I went to throw up I swear when it hit the same point it made me really aware it was there. Which of course then made me like something is definitely there now as I am feeling a physical restriction. Hopefully I will get my blood test this week and then I will know more.

But i just want it gone. Because its persisted for so long I've even questioned if I've always felt it. But I know it hasnt always been there.

Yours could be very much linked to anxiety, I think if I’ve got it correct there’s a word for it globus something, which feels like something is stuck in throat, it’s linked to anxiety, I can cough up thick clear mucus esp in mornings, and I’ve been told it’s acid reflux gastritis type thing, I also have trouble with breathing sometimes with this, but as I said I haven’t been following a gerd diet, I will be from today, I even know when mine started it was 5 days after I lifted something heavy up I felt something shift in my left side sounds crazy but it’s true, so goodness knows what’s going on, I don’t suffer from anxiety at all so I know mine isn’t that, but I’m worried about having camera down throat into stomach, simply because I’ve got a phobia of being sick choking! Ten days ago I got small piece of apple stuck in my throat for what seemed like hours, I was drinking eating toast eating crushed banana I could feel it turning in my throat, when I drank, cutting a long story short my husband rang pharmacist he said as I could breathe normally from the start and still swallow things, he said it’s obviously gone down but what I was feeling was the after effects it felt very heavy and sore,

SpideyMom · 09/05/2020 14:34

Its bloody frightening isnt it. Another doctor I spoke to weeks ago said she felt it was a combination of things which is why they are trying to treat a variety of things. I too can sometimes bring up mucus which is why I feel I have massive pool of it sitting there.

A camera hasnt been mentioned to me. Its blood tests for me first but I wouldnt like the camera down my throat either.

I hope you feel better soon

I’m drinking quite a bit of water trying to lay off the chocolate that I love, eating smaller meals, so trying to do what I can, it’s the pains and nausea that’s awful dry mouth yet loads of mucus,

SpideyMom · 13/05/2020 00:04

Hows in going @CambsAlways? I've gone for my blood test now but I've seriously had enough

It is hard isn’t it,I don’t know whether you can send private messages on here can you, I was going to pm you, what area do you live in are you in U.K., I’m still the same eating the same sort of foods, but still feeling pretty much the same

Proudnana3 · 16/06/2020 11:56

I have had the same since lockdown began, first felt like mucus burning in my throat and a slight cough. Doctor gave me nasal spray which cleared my congestion but feeling of something in my throat never went away. I’ve been on lansoperazole for two months now and it’s still there. Doesn’t effect my eating but constantly feels like I have mucus around my dangly bit in my throat which I can’t swallow, doctor agreed to have a look and said all looked fine and gave me another 4 weeks of lansoperazole and 10mg of Amitriptyline as he felt anxiety was also contributing to my symptoms. 4 weeks on I still feel it, if I drink water it feels like mucus if I don’t drink for a while It feels like a wet crisp that I can’t swallow and my throat feels dry. I’ve decided to try gaviscon advance now as it’s really getting me down. Funnily enough though if I have a glass of wine it goes away temporary. I do believe I had allergies and acid reflux at the beginningwhich was treated but now my brain is telling me something is wrong and I can’t stop thinking about how my throat feels. ☹️

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 15:14

Mines still there too. No medication has eased it

Has someone examined your thyroid ?
An enlarged thyroid can cause this symptom

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 16:23

No but ive had bloods taken during lockdown and they came back normal

OP posts:
Proudnana3 · 16/06/2020 16:46

Doctor looked down my throat and felt all my neck and said it was all normal. Just wish someone would tell my brain that

Lightsabre · 16/06/2020 17:21

I think you will need an endoscopy to see what is going on.

Proudnana3 · 16/06/2020 17:39

Easier said than done I tried to go private and was told they were only seeing patients that were deemed absolutely necessary by the nhs. Trouble is that adds to the anxiety when you can’t get the usual tests done. To be fair my doctor did try and put my mind at ease by seeing me but I just can’t stop thinking how my throat feels, it’s the first thing I do when I wake up. I feel like I’m going nuts.

FruitPastillesaregood · 16/06/2020 17:42

I had this for ages and Was booked in for an endoscopy. I panicked twice and they couldn’t do it. I worked out it was related to eating bread and carbs generally. As soon as I stopped eating bread it went.

Proudnana3 · 16/06/2020 17:56

Mines worse if I eat Chile’s, does yours always feel like it’s the same place ? Mine is sometimes at the side and I almost feel I could scoop something out but other times it feels more central and further down and feels more like stuck mucus than a lump other times just feels like I’ve eaten a fur ball and it’s stuck around the dangly bit in my throat.

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 18:04

Mines always in the same place and I do believe its anxiety related. I have had roughly a week off in total from it during lockdown and it came back terribly when I was given news my job may not ve secure. Since then its never left

OP posts:
Proudnana3 · 16/06/2020 18:17

Sorry to hear that it’s a really awful time, I’m self employed and haven’t worked since lockdown so it’s been a big worry. The brain is a very powerful tool and can really play tricks on you, I also think mine is anxiety , my husband and kids all tell me if anyone thinks about how there throat feels everybody can feel something so I just need to stop thinking about it but that’s easy for someone else to say.

SpideyMom · 17/06/2020 15:06

So im being referred to an ENT. Its required but now I am shitting myself

OP posts:
Proudnana3 · 17/06/2020 16:24

I’m sure it will all be fine, sometimes just having them look and give you the all clear is enough to make it go away. Have you been given a date? I’m going to give the mucus syrup a try as mine does feel more phlegm like than an actual lump even though I’m no longer congested.

irisnotadaff · 17/06/2020 16:45

Please be seen by ENT, someone I loved had similar for ages and by the time they were properly checked over it was too late, Oesophageal cancer.
Please go see them, fingers crossed it will be something easily treatable and will help with the anxiety too. But please do go. I’ll never forgive myself for not pushing before.

Proudnana3 · 17/06/2020 17:19

Sorry to hear that. What were their main symptoms. All the doctors I have seen and spoken to have said they don’t think I need to be referred as none of my symptoms raise any red flags to them, although they are worried about my wellbeing they said that are not concerned about my symptoms 🤷‍♀️
