Today I have accepted that I must end my love affair with white wine.................

I adore it............consume it in bucket fulls and like a gorgeous man it takes over my life and leaves me feeling shite most of the time. Im fat, pasty , dry skinned and constantly tired and now it is starting to affect my work and home life. Yes I function very well and my children are happy and healthy cared for a lot of the time by a nanny as I work 60 to 70 hour weeks but I dont like myself very much and I know I could do so much better without this obession in my life.

So no more wine ( red or white ) or beer etc. Its gin and slimline tonics from now on and only at the weekend. Goes well with the weight watchers plan too.

Anyone else want to join me in suuport ?

Waynetta - could you be pregnant? That is the only time wine tastes vile to me - unless of course it's corked.

themoon66 · 15/09/2007 14:45

Well... out for a curry with best mate last night. We were both adamant that we would stick to iced water, but when the waiter said 'can I get you any drinks' I just said 'pint of lager please..oops'. So my mate said the same.

We did manage to order water after that one pint though.

I had one bottle of grolsh lager (330mls) when I got home.

That was a VERY restrained friday night for me.

It will be wine tonight I suppose, most likely starting whilst cooking.

jooleybee · 15/09/2007 15:55

Well those of you about last night will know I downed a whole bottle! Woke up this morning feeling shit rough, probably because I hadn't eaten, so today have ruined diet because I'm ravenous. Night off alcohol for me tonight I think. Why do we enjoy something so much when it makes you feel so awful next day?

laloop · 15/09/2007 16:07

Same here, we were out for dinner last night and I'm sure I must have got through a full bottle of red. No headache which is good BUT I have the worst hangover munchies, can't stop nibbling. So that more than cancels out the gym workout yesterday, grr. Can't be bothered to make dinner tonight so will probably send out for pizza while rugby is on (come on Ireland!!!). So the wine has completely wrecked my diet too, grrr.

themoon66 · 15/09/2007 16:56

Now you see jooleybee, I do that 'oh I'm feeling so rough so I'll have an alcohol free night tonight' thing too.

Then I start cooking. Or DH starts cooking. And we have a little tipple, just amuse whilst stirring pans etc

And bang goes any idea of 'alcohol free night'.

WaynettaVonSlob · 15/09/2007 17:36

PMSL
I bet this is the only thread you could come on to on MN and say that some wine taster vile and have it be suggested that you're pregnant or have a cold, because their is no other sane reason for wine to be repulsive!! !
I think the problem with last night's wine was that it was crap wine at the 'do', and the glass I had when I came home was from a bottle that had been open a few days.
Soooooo, I have put some nice white in the fridge and will try again tonight. And if it still tastes vile I better go pee on a stick .

BarbieGirl · 15/09/2007 19:32

I cracked open a bottle of wine tonight - Anyone else??

So much for trying to loose weight. My intention was to have an early night .

sibble · 15/09/2007 21:44

Just to make you all feel better managed to polish of a bottle last night too. So much for good intentions. lol at the tasting vile thing. Had a glass last night out of the fridge, tasted vile should have left it there but no decided it must have been because it had been in the fridge for a few days (most unheard of in this house) so opened another to make sure . That was the slippery slope down.

For me it really is the cooking habit, start to prepare dinner, chop garlic and onions have a little sip, chop herbs, have another little sip, start to gently cook, have another little sip, where did the glass go turns rapidly into where did the bottle go . Oh and the weather, we had a beautiful spring day here yesterday, so cleaned the pool ready for a dip took the boys to the beach for ice lollies and paddle. Had had such a good day sat on the deck when I got home with my glass of white reflecting on how good things are when the sun shines. TOday it's pee'ing down, the head is muzzy, got to go to the supermarket and to ds1's football presentation this afternoon armed with my plate of food to share. Doesn't seem so smart or clever this morning .

I don't drink spirits, lager, beers, I don't even drink rose, sav blanc, reisling and heaps of other whites so I am a rather selective lush. If we go out and they don't have what I like I can quite happily not drink but put me in a room with a nice unoaked chardy or pinot noir and you'd better lock up the cellar.

laloop · 16/09/2007 17:29

How's everyone today? Can't decide if Sunday is part of my "allowed" days or not regarding the wine, will wait and see....

ladylush · 16/09/2007 21:47

Well waynetta? How did the new bottle taste?

You are right - this is the only thread where loss of appetite for wine is met with concern

Well, I told my mates on my ttc thread that I had no alcohol this weekend. Trying to avoid it during the 2ww as I can't seem to stick to just one small glass. What I neglected to tell them is how bloody miserable I am. I don't crave it but I miss it - does that make sense? It's going to be a long 2 weeks

WaynettaVonSlob · 16/09/2007 21:50

Ladylush- you'll be pleased to know that there is no need for me to pee on a stick!!! Obviously I hav e superior tastebuds and can't cope with crap wine ()

However, I have broked my rule of not drinking past 7pm this evening, and am nursing yet another ice cold glass of Pinot...hmmmmmmmm........am off to bed after this though!!

ladylush · 16/09/2007 21:54

Well it's a curse being so discerning isn't it Glad there is no need to pee on a stick, though to be honest I was getting quite excited about the prospect of it. That's the problem when one is ttc, they live for others peeing on a stick too
at your pinot noir - waft it in front of the computer screen so I can at least get the scent of it!

laloop · 16/09/2007 22:10

It's just a cup of tea here tonight, helped by the fact that the wine rack has not been replenished so I'll not be tempted. So that will be 5 nights sans vin if I can keep to the "not on a school night" rule.

(Pinot noir, yum...)

WaynettaVonSlob · 16/09/2007 22:12

it's a Grigio, not a Noir dahling ()..can you smell it? can you????!!

Here's hoping that your body will soon be telling you not to crave wine because it has other more important things to deal with!

WaynettaVonSlob · 16/09/2007 22:14

Now, have just realised it's after 10, so I need to get to bed ahead of my nice and early alarm clock, so laloop and Ladylush, I shall speak with you (soberly tomorrow, and good luck everyone else for week #2.

laloop · 16/09/2007 22:17

Night, Waynetta

ladylush · 16/09/2007 22:19

sorry - ahem, grigio. Still
Think I will go and get a echinacea and raspberry tea - oh joy
Waynetta - thanks, me too

sibble · 17/09/2007 00:41

mmmmmmmmm, pinot grigio, we can't get it in NZ (or at least a decent one that's not top of the range lets take out another mortgage one). Every time I come home I stay with a girlfriend who has a bottle or two on chill in the fridge for me........can't wait for next May.

ladylush · 17/09/2007 08:40

Well that's 2 wine free days this week. Doubt I will drink tonight either. Meeting a friend tomorrow so might have one but driving later in the day so not more than that. This might get to be my most wine free week yet!

mummypoppins · 18/09/2007 09:28

Hooray I have done 2 alcohol free nights and I am very pleased with myself!!

How is everone else doing ?

OP posts:
ladylush · 18/09/2007 10:13

I've done 3. Very pleased with myself. Feel more alert etc but on the minus side life is more dull. Wine tends to make the world seem a bit more fun.

themoon66 · 18/09/2007 10:44

3 vodkas last night... big ones

but no wine.

sibble · 18/09/2007 21:06

2 wine free nights, but can't confess to being all virtuous had a bottle of beer each night, having said I don't like beer tried some of dh's and it wasn't bad. figure 1 unit/bottle of beer is better than 6 units/bottle of wine. plus feel great and have lost the post wine bloat that I get in the mornings when I drink.

sibble · 18/09/2007 21:07

that should have been 8 units not 6

laloop · 19/09/2007 09:46

Hi, I had another alcohol-free night last night but had 2 large glasses of rioja on Monday night. Think I should be able to make it until Friday (hope I haven't jinxed myself there).
How's everyone else doing?
