Today I have accepted that I must end my love affair with white wine.................

I adore it............consume it in bucket fulls and like a gorgeous man it takes over my life and leaves me feeling shite most of the time. Im fat, pasty , dry skinned and constantly tired and now it is starting to affect my work and home life. Yes I function very well and my children are happy and healthy cared for a lot of the time by a nanny as I work 60 to 70 hour weeks but I dont like myself very much and I know I could do so much better without this obession in my life.

So no more wine ( red or white ) or beer etc. Its gin and slimline tonics from now on and only at the weekend. Goes well with the weight watchers plan too.

Anyone else want to join me in suuport ?

hi all, have also been avoiding this thread partly as have been at the beach on hols and partly because have been drinking best part of a bottle for past 2 weeks being christmas and all that. Have started a serious detox 2 days ago though, no alcohol, I have 1 can of diet coke/day, that's gone am juicing and eating heaps of fresh fruit and veggies etc....so can anybody tell me why i have had the mother of all headaches for the past 24 hours and feel more cr*p than I can remember for a long time. dh is being very unhelpful and merrily popping the cork on what's left of the wine collection. I was aiming for 28 days but it's our anniversary next Monday so will take each day as it comes...if I don't cave in on account of this poxy detox head ache

Sibble · 07/01/2008 18:13

btw doublebluff they say that drinking less regularly is better than weekend blow outs. the problem I have with that is using it as an excuse and probably ending up drinking more that if I saved it up to the weekend

DettaJnr · 07/01/2008 18:52

Hi all. Welcome to DB.

I did see that programme and I think she went a bit overboard too. They also didn't appear to do blood tests. It was interesting what the make-up artist said about her skin though. I could relate with a lot of what she was feeling and it has given me encouragement.

I had a stomach bug for the last week (saturday to saturday) so had an enforced alcohol free new year. Not even one of new year's eve!!!

Good luck to everyone this week.

DoubleBluff · 07/01/2008 19:29

Am going to try really hard to last out until Friday. Although had one small bottled beer tonight.

ladylush · 08/01/2008 10:10

Well done Sibble . Detox headache could be caffeine withdrawal if you have cut it down. I used to drink up to 3 cans of diet coke a day and I got some bad headaches when I stopped drinking it. I think those drinks have a lot of caffeine in them.

Dettajnr - glad you are feeling better now

DettaJnr · 08/01/2008 18:43

Had two bottles of German beer last night. Hoping to do much better for the rest of the week. Weight is piling on and clothes starting to feel uncomfortable... I wouldn't mind too much if I had made a pig of myself over the festive period but I had a stomach bug and I didn't even eat any mince pies. Life's just not fair sometimes. (I shouldn't really complain, my poor MIL (83) spent all day in casualty yesterday, got put on a trolley around 11pm and was found a bed sometime during the night on a ward.)

Good luck to all.

Sibble · 08/01/2008 19:13

day 4 today, headache finally went late yesterday, so 3 alcohol free days - woohoo.

Dettajnr - I know what you mean, part of the spur into action was heading to the sales and catching sight of the semi naked body in the mirror - not nice...I have piled on half a stone over winter, mostly wine I'm sure. Good luck.

DettaJnr · 10/01/2008 18:46

How's everyone doing? I managed an alcohol free night last night. Can I make it two? (I doubt it!)

Sibble, I know what you mean. I caught sight of myself in a changing room and at the time was filled with great determination to give up butter (one of my many downfalls), chocolate etc. and exercise more. One month later I am still stuffing my face...

Hope everyone is doing well.

hellobellosback · 10/01/2008 19:04

Half a stone of wine, eh!? The very idea

ladylush · 10/01/2008 19:22

A good week for me. No alcohol since Sunday

DoubleBluff · 11/01/2008 12:49

Well done LL and Detta.
I had nothing last night and the night before.
Am going shopping tody so will limit myself to ONE bottle and hope to make it last two nights. It is the weekend afterall.
Also did half hour run rthis morning anf feel good so hopefully can keep going now I have made a start.
Good luck for the weekend everyone.

ladylush · 11/01/2008 19:10

Well done doublebluff. Running too - v impressed.

DettaJnr · 12/01/2008 18:02

DB - very impressed. I haven't done too well this week. Mind you, I do walk to school most days and I never think that as exercise. Even though I had one or two drinks most nights I feel I could have done better. That is a huge improvement though.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

ladylush · 15/01/2008 12:09

I am still abstaining in the week. My friday will be thursday this week though cos it's my birthday

DettaJnr · 15/01/2008 20:20

Happy Birthday LL!

DB - Inspired by your run went out Sunday on bikes which was great. Hoping to do this more often. Had nothing last night and hoping to keep alcohol free for the week.

DS (6yrs) going in to hospital on Thursday (exploration of undescended testis)and MIL still in hospital. So feeling very stressed.

ladylush · 16/01/2008 08:59

Thanks Detta but it's tomorrow
Sorry to hear your ds has to go into hospital but if it's any consolation I can remember from my time on a paediatric ward (as a student nurse) that they said it's extremely common in little boys - so therefore at least they are very experienced in dealing with it iyswim. As a mum it doesn't stop you worrying though does it - just spoil him lots cos it will make you feel better Well done for the cycling - I've got a day off today so I'm going to go swimming. I went on Sunday and I want to try and go 3 times a week.

DettaJnr · 16/01/2008 18:28

IKWYM. I too trained as a nurse (there are too many similarities...) so I think I would be a nervous wreck if I wasn't so at ease in a hospital. I am off to Canada next week for ten days with my mother for my brother's 50th b'day party. And this is on my mind. I have never been away from the kids and am concerned for them and me, if truth be known. I hate flying... My DH is well capable so rationally I know they will be fine.

Well done with the swimming. Had another a/free night last night and hoping to keep this up for as long as possible. Once I don't have a drink and the longer I go without it the better I do. Good luck and Happy Birthday!

ladylush · 17/01/2008 05:03

That's freaky Whilst we're on the topic of similarities........I hate flying too. I used to be fine (would get a bit nervous if excessive turbulence but generally ok) but since being pregnant with ds I have been a nervous wreck. I even scrutinise the cabin crew to see if they look at all nervous - and worse still if I see they're not, I think they're covering up! I think that's called PARANOIA It is so bad that it spoils the beginning and end of my holiday. I am thinking about getting hypnotherapy.

Hope your ds is fine after his op. IKWYM about not wanting to be away without them. I was away from dh and ds for the first time in October (when in Ireland for my granny's funeral)and it was pretty weird. I did actually enjoy the time with my family though and it felt good to not have to constantly think about ds as you do when you are with them (eg, what shall I cook for dinner, plan nap time etc). I hope you can enjoy it anyway. I hear Canada is a beautiful country. Re the flight - have you considered taking a benzo eg Lorazepam? I did but dismissed the idea (but won't tell you why as it won't help your anxiety levels!)

DettaJnr · 17/01/2008 19:44

LL, did you really send that at 5am?!

Yes, I sometimes take diazepam. I am flying with my mother and we have to fly to London and then have a 9 hour flight to Calgary. I'm worried I might feel panicky when I'm there and miss the kids. I don't know what I'll do with myself...

Today's surgery went well. They had to remove his right testis through an old inguinal hernia site, as it was shrivelled and posed a threat later in life. No football etc for 4 weeks. He is a very active child...

Good luck this week.

ladylush · 18/01/2008 18:08

Yes I couldn't sleep that night - probably nightmares about reaching 36

Glad your ds is ok after his op. Hope he manages to take it easy for the 4 weeks.

DettaJnr · 22/01/2008 11:57

Only a spring chicken!

Have been doing really well except for Sunday when DH and myself went out to an early music club (5.30 - 7.30) and drank copious amounts of Guinness and Baileys!!!

I am off early on Thursday and wont be back until early Feb. Apparently it has been snowing heavily and is really cold...

Good luck to everyone.

ladylush · 27/01/2008 23:11

I think you deserved the treat tbh - plus good to have some time with your dh before you go away. Hope all goes well in Canada. Have a great time

ladylush · 27/01/2008 23:11

by the way, where has everyone else gone?

hellobellosback · 28/01/2008 09:50

lurking quietly.... Not drinking SO much these days. I don't know what's happened apart from serious diseases! I would have thought that I would drink MORE! I'll probably post a bit more often before long. I've been quite depressed recently and really don't know what to say.

ladylush · 28/01/2008 22:20

hi hellobello Sorry to hear you're feeling down. Could it be an adjustment thing cos of the illness? I would say that it's pretty common for people who have emerged from a serious illness to endure a bout of depression.
