I adore it............consume it in bucket fulls and like a gorgeous man it takes over my life and leaves me feeling shite most of the time. Im fat, pasty , dry skinned and constantly tired and now it is starting to affect my work and home life. Yes I function very well and my children are happy and healthy cared for a lot of the time by a nanny as I work 60 to 70 hour weeks but I dont like myself very much and I know I could do so much better without this obession in my life.

So no more wine ( red or white ) or beer etc. Its gin and slimline tonics from now on and only at the weekend. Goes well with the weight watchers plan too.

Anyone else want to join me in suuport ?

Count me in, for all of the same reasons, but it will be vodka and diet coke....

mummypoppins · 10/09/2007 10:23

Ok max 3 a night..........once I have got over the wine cravings I may allow myself a G and T midweek...........even with this will still be way under my usual bottle a night and more at the weekends.

Anyone else ?

OP posts:
cornsilk · 10/09/2007 10:24

I'm also on g and t at the moment, but the slimline tonic is gross.

mummypoppins · 10/09/2007 10:30

I dont mind it actually I guess it takes some getting used too though........

Surely there must be more white wine addicts out there ?

laloop · 10/09/2007 10:39

I'll join you but it's a red wine thing going on here. Now that school has restarted I want to get back to alcohol-free week nights, then can indulge without guilt at the weekends

themoon66 · 10/09/2007 10:43

Oh yes.... white wine addict here too.

I can put away a full bottle every night with ease. Although recently have been restricting myself to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Am getting fed up of feeling like Shite every Monday morning though.

Hurlyburly · 10/09/2007 10:47

Hi Mummypoppins.

I really had developed an alcohol dependency - drinking every night after work. It was not healthy. "Fat, pasty, dry-skinned and constantly tired"? Yep, me too.

So about six months ago, I limited my alcohol intake to Friday and Saturday nights, and potentially a glass on Sunday lunchtime. No more.

I have loads more energy, have lost two stone, and my life is back on track. Now I just have to keep it that way.

GOOD LUCK AND THINKING OF YOU

bagpuss · 10/09/2007 10:53

Just wanted to say that I gave up drinking all together 16 months ago and have dropped 2 dress sizes and feel fab. I really don't miss it at all. Good luck .

themoon66 · 10/09/2007 10:55

Longest period of abstinence was 2 weeks. I did feel fab though. I just sort of slipped back one glass at a time.

BrassicMonkey · 10/09/2007 10:57

"like a gorgeous man it takes over my life and leaves me feeling shite most of the time" LOL. How very true.

Good luck

mummypoppins · 10/09/2007 11:04

Thanks guys..........I am impressed with one glass on Sunday lunchtime Hurly Burly if I start at lunctime I legless by tea.........Disgraceful. I really struggle to stop.

So I intend to come on here when the white wine craving starts....lets all do the same.

What amzes me is as a student I hardly drank..............hit my late 20's with my own home and a greater disposable income and a very stressful job and I hit the slippery slope. I know if I dont stop soon it will be very very bad news.

Muumypoppins - I stopped a couple of months ago for a couple of weeks (to prove I could ) and found that it was the triggers / associations I found hardest to deal with......
Crap day at work - drin
Kids in bed - glass of wine
Supper - drink
relaxing afterward - drink

I found that if I poured myself a pint of squash the SECOND I got in, and started sipping on it while sorting out the kids then the sweetness of it actually put me off wanting wine. It also meant I ate less (get munchies when drinking) and definitely was less bloated after 2 weeks and felt better.
Of course I ruined it all by reverting to my old ways after the two weeks, but I'm going to try it again......

expatinscotland · 10/09/2007 11:53

your bank balance will thank you, too.

ishouldbeironing · 10/09/2007 12:02

I went to the bottle bank yesterday and I was and at the amount of bottles and yet I always felt that I was a moderate drinker - obviously not!!
The consumption just creeps up on you without noticing - so yes I will definately be joining you.

mummypoppins · 10/09/2007 12:20

You are right it does.......my parents hardly ever drank at home. Why do we get into a habit of drinking every night. ?

I use it as a reward for everything.

Good day at work.......well done ...drink
Bad day at work.......def drink.
People come round they all get offered drink!
Seems I cannot get past 6pm at the wekends without a drink. Especially Sunday night. All the drudgery of getting together school uniform and preparing for the week. Has to be done with a drink in my hand.

I look back at photos of me at home and there is always a wine glass in front of me or in my hands. !

WVS I am going to do the same with a cup of tea. But then no more wine. Its hard to think I wont ever drink again so I will stick to G and T. I seriously dont think I will be able to consume the same amount of them in view of the volume of liquid.

Wine is just too alcoholic these days.

Post later

Cheers!

May I add a top tip that I have discovered recently?
Drink water all day and then at night change to something else but drink in a wine glass
I am on thorncroft detox cordial which is yum and seems like a real treat after drinking water all day but it could be any cordial you wish
Good luck all. This really worked for me

Beetroot · 10/09/2007 13:42

I would just give up alchohol totally for a month. Then allow yourself a couple of galsses at the weekend but only 2/3 NO MORE.

Iced water or TEA!

BarbieGirl · 10/09/2007 13:54

I too have a passion for wine - it's red for me. I drink far too much and have gained 1 stone.

I really want to stop but I am not finding it easy. What else is there to do of an evening than crack open a bottle of wine .

Anchovy · 10/09/2007 13:55

Agree with Beetroot. DH and I gave up drinking for a month in June. One reason was to check that we could - and we agreed that if we did find it hard, we should have a bit of a word with ourselves. It is also very good for recalibrating your drinking - it resets the gradual upwards ratchet. Am pleased to say that once we got into the mindset it really wasn't too hard. (Phew!)

mummypoppins · 10/09/2007 15:27

I managed 2.5 weeks without in Jan this year when I was on the Cambridge diet but it does creep back to more and more every night.

It will be hard but I will get to Friday this week and then have a Gin and Tonic or 3 but that will be better than the bottle of wine I would normally have.

I will break this habit before it breaks me!!

OP posts:
sandyballs · 10/09/2007 15:31

Well done, I'll join, having had a very very boozy weekend (red wine).

I'm starting to worry that my DD's think it's completely normal to see mummy finishing off a bottle of wine of an evening .

cluelessnchaos · 10/09/2007 15:36

I lost a stone a couple of years ago by switching to g and t, I am with you.

BarbieGirl · 10/09/2007 16:36

Are there any other alcoholic drinks that contain less calories than wine - other than gin & tonic or vodka & diet coke?? I really don't like these drinks.
