For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

oh, possum, you mention pulses...etc...yes they do count towards the 10/10 however, no matter how large the portion, each kind of pulses will only count as one portion, if that makes sense...

And Franny, why were you in a bad mood?

3andnomore · 02/09/2007 10:08

lol avi....see, I now see Baby's, hold Baby's, coo over Baby's, think they are adorable and everything as much as ever...but....they do not make me feel broody anymore...

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 10:08

I missed that, 3andnomore, sorry, but it was a small hello Are you ok? Have a nice day with your IL's.

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 10:09

actually

I am probably not meant to say this but small piece of MN gossip

I had to email MNHQ about something to do with the deleted thread, and the person who answered me (see how I am preserving your anonymity? ) said, "by the way, can you send me your bulk cooking Document?" They are such HUGE big lurkers at MNHQ

Really? That's hilarious, I am no good at bluk cooking, my freezer is always full of bread. Can I have the heuristic play one, please?

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 10:12

3andnomore it is good to have you back as well. You've reminded me that Possum mentioned seeds - seeds are fab things to eat but they don't count in your 10, sorry. I must admit as we are doing 10 instead of 5, I bend the rules and allow 2 portions of pulses instead of 1. I am sure other people make up their own rules too (naming no names but thinking of Avi with her NUTS )

lol mrs. C....thanks, yes we are o.k....can't believe the holidays are almost finished now....
my es is getting a bit worried now, about his new school (starting secondary school) and my ms is over excited about starting Reception, and will be very disappointed when he realises he won't be starting till the 10th, lol...will take him out on his own a bit, he doesn't get that often anymoreSo, hopefully that will make up for it

(Oh and I did only post a small little post, so, possibly easy to overlook, lol)

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 10:12

yes yes [showers Documents everywhere]

if I don't do it harrass me by email. I'm getting very slack these days but I will get round to it.

3andnomore · 02/09/2007 10:14

lol...franny...I am sure we are meant to bend the rules...surely that is what rules are for...
and lol at that gossip....and what bulk cooking document?

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 10:15

3andnomore I had my friend HC staying with me last week and when she was gone I felt a bit tired and maudlin. Been a long month I think. September is such a nice time of year though, I have high hopes for it.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 02/09/2007 10:16

glad you feeling better and more positive again franny
I do like September, too....

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 10:17

LOL, we were talking about how we organise family meals, and I was trying to explain how I bulk cook and freeze lots. It all got a bit complicated, so I wrote an explanation which was too long to post on here. People have been emailing me for it. It's not anything special but it does explain how you can cook only once every 3 weeks if you are lazy sort like me

3andnomore · 02/09/2007 10:23

oh franny, please, do send me that E-mail, sounds really interesting

lionheart · 02/09/2007 10:42

Hello 3.

BBBee · 02/09/2007 11:57

hello

am feeling much brighter today - ate some edamame and read my book last night to calm myself down after a crap day.

The bulk cooking thing is really good have used it as a base for making my own plans that will be very helpful in the coming busy months.

DD is a bit fragile about going back to school - she is quite senstive and keeps having little 'worries' about it all.
Have spent the morning sorting out school clothes to keep up the dripdripdrip you are going back to school thing.

Where do we stand on fruit that has been altered to be very unhealthy? I am making an apple pie today - if I eat enough of it will it count?

Also, as I am feeling a little emotional want to say tahnks to all the lovely people on here - you are often a cosy refuge in the storm of mumsnet and I am really aware of how much fruit and vegetables I am having.

Anywya - gush over.

NotReallyHerePossum · 02/09/2007 11:59

Thank you Franny, amazing, that was the book I had in mind. Very good read albeit, as you say, a bit depressing as it makes clear that we mothers are but one formative influence on our sprogs.
ok, no seeds, well I'll just have eat some more plums then.
I really like 'The Invisible Mango'
sorry Franny but when you posted about your annoying mum and it's bad manners to go into another woman's kitchen and prod their mango it somehow sounded rather rude and made me snort in an undiginified fashion. You have a great way with words.

NotReallyHerePossum · 02/09/2007 12:04

quick question Franny, why don't you like 'The Continuum Concept'? Thought it might have been up your street, if I'm not being presumptious?

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 12:04

That was very funny. My mother sticks her finger in things I'm making, drives me mad. She doesn't come very much as she often leaves in tears. What? It's not my fault she's so sensitive.

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 12:05

I wondered that about the Liedlif too...

BBBee · 02/09/2007 12:13

I still have a copy of 'The Continuum Concept' going for free if anyone wants it.

Lullabyloo · 02/09/2007 12:14

hullo chaps
made a delicious breakfast this morning, have a new wholefood book & tis very inspiring

Rice Cream

3oz cooked brown rice
185ml milk(soya,dairy,almond,rice)
zest of half a lemon
45g roughly chopped dried apricot or peach
30g sultanas or raisins
40g roughly chopped almonds
quater tsp cinnamon

place all ingredients in a saucepan with 125ml water & bring gently to a slow simmer.Cook over v.low heat till thick & creamy...about 10 mins.

we had it with grilled peaches...it was sooooo gooood

Well am a bit down in the dumps...yesterday brought good & bad news.My consultant is referring me to a top liver guy at King's in London .I have not just got a multitude of tumors on my liver,it seems my liver is just one big cluster of tumors & no one has seen the likes of it before. The good news is that they are a benign form,& I havn't a primary cancer. The bad news is that The liver cant function adequately,I am quite jaundiced & these tumors are prone to rupture & cause other problems. They cannot do a biopsy because a bleed would be fatal.
Most upsetting was the news that my lymphatic system has basically packed up,causing lymphoedema in my leg, very little resistance to infection, hair loss, tiredness etc etc
There is no cure,I have to wear horrid, horrid surgical stocking on that leg for the rest of my life, never ever go barefoot, even on the carpet as too much risk of infection.Any infection, even athletes foot would apparantly have dire consequences Have to keep mega doses of antibiotics here just in case & take quinnine every day for the cramps, numbness etc
This is just the tip of the ice berg...but am not going to ramble on...i need to seek alternative therapies as being told all this at 35 yrs of age is grim to say the least.

dh is working....ds is bored & i wantt to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

someone cheer me up

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 12:18

LL - What a terrible shock all this is for you. I don't know how to cheer you up other than we all clearly think you're amazing and would like to line up in your kitchen for lunch. I, and I'm sure others will help to try and research alternative therapies. Even seemingly disastrous things like this have had miracle recoveries. Never give up hope.

Highlander · 02/09/2007 12:30

EXCELLENT thread title ladies!

BBBee · 02/09/2007 12:36

oh LL.

OKay so you know what it is and you know it is not cancer and you are seeing the top specialist in the country. All these things are (in light of your situation) positives. Also you are 35 which is very young and you do look after yourself so in lots of ways you are physically strong to deal with this.

A friend of mine who did have cancer had most of her immune system destroyed but they did this fantastci treatment where they could somehow remove mylin sheaths from other people's white blood cells and transfer them to hers. She does not have her own strong immune system but they are able to make sure that she gets a good dose of other people's immune systems. I know this may not be applicable to you but I guess what I am trying to say is that there are wonderful things they can do and progress is being made all the time.

I do not know about alternativce therapies but I do know that keping positive is very important and we all know how wonderful you are at doing that.

Feel terrible about moaning on now. The rice thing sounds wonderful and I am going to make it this afternoon.

Very best and fond wishes.

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2007 12:58

Lullaby that is extraordinary news. I can hardly believe it - I can't imagine how it must be to try to take all this news in. Like BBB I am pleased to hear you have a diagnosis and that you're seeing the top specialist. But the prospect of how things are going to be for you, is obviously grim to face up to, to say the least. Please please offload on here any time you want to and tell us what information and support you need. We have a lot of knowledge at our fingertips here - lots of clever people who know stuff about stuff.

BBB we all need a moan sometimes. No shame in coming here amongst friends for a whinge. I loved this: "you are often a cosy refuge in the storm of mumsnet and I am really aware of how much fruit and vegetables I am having" made me ROFL for some reason

I didn't like the Continuum Concept because I felt it was written from a tone of trying to make people feel guilty, and was damning of parents who had not followed the methods. Liedloff doesn't have children herself which always makes me suspicious I must admit. I like the philosophy espoused in the book and I think most people who know me know that I am all for carrying, co-sleeping, etc, but I didn't like her tone at all. Maybe I will try it again one day as I read it when ds was rather small and I felt very vulnerable and susceptible to criticism. However at that time I very much enjoyed reading Dr Sears and Deborah Jackson who are both parents, and very encouraging IMO.
