For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

But the fields have won you over?

MrsCurrant · 31/05/2007 21:34

June tomorrow...

Strawberries

Pimms

Tennis

...on the sofa

< happy sigh >

SauerKraut · 31/05/2007 21:35

I suppose I might grudgingly admit they have, now they're proving so handy for all kinds of exercise, and I suppose Zürich isn't that far, but I grew up in big cities, and am definitely not suited to country village life. Can't keep my big gob shut for long enough, for a start.

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2007 21:57

Oh I got an email from the pyo people which said early strawbs were ready now

OP posts:
lionheart · 31/05/2007 21:57

Are you very much out in the sticks, SauerKraut?

Vancouver (a long way from thee or me, I know) is supposed to be great for mixing up the wholesome and outdoorsy

with the cosmopolitan and Cultured (with a capital C).

Aaah, tennis season. That sounds lovely.

lionheart · 31/05/2007 22:00

I didn't mean because you were being gripey, Franny (you really weren't).

I was thinking more of a cyber chaos theory.

New thread = better Franny.

SauerKraut · 01/06/2007 09:22

No, Lionheart, 15 mins from Baden (nice town) and Zürich (biggest city), it's just that I don't drive and the school system is such that my 4 are constantly coming and going all day so getting to places time is limited.

lionheart · 01/06/2007 10:30

Oh, I see, that must be tough.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 18:05

Right I have eaten:

orange, grapes, banana, apple, pear, raisins

am having broccoli and corn with dinner, then will have more fruit

Have been to health shop and been advised this and this. Feel faintly sick at prices but dp says it is worth it if it works...

plus advised to drink hot water with juice of a lemon in (wow - tangy )

and eat vast amounts of garlic and onions you're all in league against me aren't you?

oh AND nothing with sugar in - as she has told me before, every time you eat something sugary it lowers the immune system for 6 hours

OP posts:
lionheart · 01/06/2007 18:43

Flip, that is expensive but if it works that will be great.

Is that true about sugar lowering the immune system, really?

Cyber chocolate only.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 18:48

I know it sounds bonkers but it is indeed true. It raises insulin levels which depresses the immune system (I think that's right, please feel free to point out I have got it wrong). I think Linus Pauling originally did some work on it in conjunction with his vitamin C stuff.

My disbelief is generated by wishful thinking rather than scientific certainty, I'm afraid.

Does this include natural sugars too? Would that leave you with enough nutrients in your diet?

(Got blue suede shoes today, thank you).

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 19:42

(Oh good! hope they were all you hoped for)

No I think natural sugars are fine. I forgot to ask her though. I looked for a link about it and found this on Dr Sears

will try to find the Pauling stuff, it is interesting isn't it? (though depressing)

Aviatrix that is very kind of you to link that for me. Yes I am interested expecially after our discussion the other day. However that link does back up what I had read, which is that although breastmilk by itself doesn't cause decay, breastmilk plus sugary food (including fruit which ds has always eaten vast amounts of) is quite liable to cause decay, in the study mentioned breastmilk plus sugar caused more decay than plain sugar solution:

"Much research indicates that it's the other foods in baby's diet (rather than breastmilk) that tend to be the main problem when it comes to tooth decay. The 1999 Erickson study (in which healthy teeth were immersed in different solutions) indicated that breastmilk alone was practically identical to water and did not cause tooth decay - another experiment even indicated that the teeth became stronger when immersed in breastmilk. However, when a small amount of sugar was added to the breastmilk, the mixture was worse than a sugar solution when it came to causing tooth decay. This study emphasizes the importance of tooth brushing and good dental hygiene."

This was exactly what shook me up and made me determined that I was going to brush ds's teeth at least once a day whether he was co-operative or not.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 20:51

didn't know your whole family was now fruiting for Britain

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 01/06/2007 20:53

didn't do too well earlier in the week, especially with no car and no way of getting to the shops
went into town on the bus in pouring rain but was unholy nightmare and absolutely so way to carry big bags of fruit

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 20:54

you must get shopping trolley

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 01/06/2007 20:55

shopping trolley and pushchair I think the bus may not stop for me at all. it is a piddling little minibus thing with no room for any passengers tbh

MrsCurrant · 01/06/2007 20:55

very depressing about the sugar thing, though I sort of knew it lowered immune system just didn't know why.

Recently eaten half a tub of raspberry sorbet to cheer my sorry snotty self up and have apparently just reduced immune system for the rest of the evening!

Strawberries, cherries, grapes, raspberries (real ones not just sorbet!) butternut squash soup (rest of yesterday's) herb quinoi and asparagus with dinner

Pretty much the same as recently

God I sound mardy.

Sorry

MrsCarrot · 01/06/2007 21:15

Just realised I have been ill since my name change!!

Mind you I have been ill since the scary pigeon came in my house too

I have also been ill since a friend gave me a massage, lymph glands?

or it could be the baby that came to lunch with
a cold?

I'll try the name change

< shuffles off to gargle more cider vinegar >

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2007 21:22
