For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

oh, sorry to hear this OR. hope your weekend gets better.

Overrun · 21/04/2007 10:54

Thanks Filthy To add to my woes I can only find one of dt2's shoes. I have looked every where, so my good intentions of going out, has been hijacked by needing to be near a loo and hop along cassidy

NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 11:31

I have been shopping and bought a top that basically completes the outfit, so it is black top with cut outs (which will look worse than some tops with the jacket, but perfectly presentable without, which is good, because I am always too warm, so the jacket will almost certainly not stay on.

I did contemplate a shiny silver tank top, but wasn't sure it would work. Probably not, with gold in the jacket etc.

So it is black top with cut outs (nice, Next), long black skirt, green jacket.

Not much in the way of fruit and veg so far, but it's guacamole for lunch, so that will be ok.

suzycreamcheese · 21/04/2007 12:02

Cappuccino · 21/04/2007 12:12

hang on I am not qualified to be on a style thread

ticky I am in north Lancs

tbh there are sometimes meet-ups there but I avoid them because I'm not struck by any of the posters

suzycreamcheese · 21/04/2007 12:48

its not a style thread is it?

..am not qualified either, and always enjoy horrendeous fashion decisions on others too much to advise what do...

amin south east...somewhere!

filthymindedvixen · 21/04/2007 13:19

bacon, lettuce, tomato and avacado butties for breakkie, my new favourite purple sprouting broccoli and stilton soup for lunch (despite the naughty, fatty and salty stilton, it's quite wholesome - got onions, celery, and lots of brocolli in )
Carrot sticks, rasps and an apple. How am I doing?
Veg curry for tea, but very little in way of exercise - 1 hour gentle weeding. Off to a birthday party now so, unless pass the parcel counts as an aerobic activity...

FrannyandZooey · 21/04/2007 13:37

Have leaped around energetically with class of three year olds for an hour. That must count as exercise. I was wearing a whistle and everything.

NQC I have started a thread for us to moan about our inlaws on. Hope everybody else is having a decent day.

filthy, you must share your recipe for purple sprouting/stilton soup it sounds divine
Two big bowls of chickpea soup from yesterday, so i think I will count that as 4, it could easily be more as it was packed with veg, but will do a conservative estimate. So that makes it 6, I must check, does a big pear count as 1 or 2?
Glad you have made a final decision NQC.
Its a glorious day here btw, is that the same for every one?

Cappuccino · 21/04/2007 14:08

am not doing too well in terms of veg

or exercise

dd1 kept me up all night mythering about her bad dream so I have what me and dh call 'itis' - sore throat, twitchy nose, chilly and generally droopy - other people might call it 'tired'

it remains to be seen if my run takes place or not

feel quite poorly at the very thought of jumping around with a whistle

Cappuccino · 21/04/2007 14:10

ooh meant to ask are we quite strict in terms of smoothie/ soup rule? I read in all that government healthy eating malarkey some time back that if it's pureed you only count one portion however much you drink

dh told me sternly that my massive smoothie yesterday was only 1 portion

or are we a bit more lax here?

TooTicky · 21/04/2007 14:12

FMV, I won't tell you who else I'm related to or you'll think I'm showing off.

Cappucino, I was born in Lancaster and more recently my dad and grandmother lived in Great Harwood.

TooTicky · 21/04/2007 14:14

I am doing very naffly today and sod the grammar. Have had part of a kiwi fruit that dd2 got bored of. Am in foul mood. I probably need a therapeutic salad but I am too grumpy to make one.

Overrun · 21/04/2007 14:17

Cappuccino - good point, I must remember that. This soup was not blended though, so I can count more than one portion. I am sure that if that is the case I have overcounted on soup before though

TooTicky · 21/04/2007 14:19

Why is fruit/veg less worthy if blended?

Overrun · 21/04/2007 14:22

Less fibre or something I guess.
TT, I too was impressed by your ancestry

FrannyandZooey · 21/04/2007 14:24

We are doing 10, so I rule that you can count 2 of blended stuff. Same for beans / pulses, and juice - you can have 3 of each. It's all good stuff.

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 14:24

i love this thread. moves far too fast to ahve any hope of keeping up tho.

i have been eating exercising and planting veggies madly. have not counted tho but im pretty sure im meeting the target.

re what wearing: have been dressed for a bike ride since 9am which has still not materialised...hmmm (but ive planed spuds and onions and tended the toms and strawberries and lettuces)

re pirate stuff - will try to put a pic on my profile page of entire clan dressed as pirates( i like your 'resons for liking pirates' list FMF)

and i used to be size 10 too. in fact, was an 8-10. i was even, accidentally and entirely to my own surprise and enjoyment, really quite glamorous for a bit. which was nice...

Cappuccino · 21/04/2007 14:31

Ticky I live in your birthplace

would you like to give me the exact whereabouts so I can doff my cap in reverence whenever I pass?

FrannyandZooey · 21/04/2007 14:54

I don't exactly know what is meant to be so all-pervadingly wonderful about being size 10 and I am honestly surprised to find this attitude on MN

it is quite possible to be size 10 and look crap you know, or to be larger and look fab

OP posts:
Overrun · 21/04/2007 15:02

Franny, I'm not sure that any one is saying that it size 10 or under is the only good size to be. I think we were just reminiscing about our bodies and their changes. I do feel a bit wistful that my size 10 days are over though, I never felt fitter or I'm afraid to say more attractive.
Trying to retain my figure is not why I participate in this thread btw. I think the conversation just turned for whatever reason last night

sarz · 21/04/2007 15:16

I have a worring thing, that i think i am addicted to houmous!! Its better than drugs or cigerets i suppose!! I have had a couscous salad (cous cous, onions, peppers, the thing that is purple and begins with an a but i dont know how you spell it!! and courgettes) Enough houmous to feed a small army, cucumber, a banana, and lots of sultanas. Got VERY sweaty at the gym.

sarz · 21/04/2007 15:18

Franny, can we have bit of thw whip back next week? I kind of enjoyed it

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 15:41

oh yes sorry fran, i didnt mean to suggest small is beautiful. i actually completely agree that small people can look crap and larger people can look, and feel(to touch, i mean) utterly divine.
