For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Thanks for the link. I'll have a read now.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:49

lol cristina - it does sound like, um, odd advice to me. i like your take it or leave it (leave it) attitude though! open mind alwaya good thing imo

bravo to the massive baby womblingalong - congrats!

womblingalong · 22/04/2007 20:57

Hi there,

How was the party? did skirt go down well, and all the lovely food?

Was bit gutted about section,as it happened after an 8 hour labour - I was planning a homebirth, but as I was 10 days overdue, and a scan at 39 weeks indicated he was v big, I had to go into hospital to have my waters broken. Laboured 8 hours on G&A, was ready to push and almost fuly dilated, and started to haemorrage,so they went to a section.

With hindsight, was best thing, due to size and position, they realised he was OP when they were doing the section.

He looks like his big sister did at this age,so I am hoping he will be as cute! He is enormous, and feeding for England though, whic is definitely not like my DD.

  • sorry about the essay!
womblingalong · 22/04/2007 21:02

OK,

Cristina - I have heard the 3 portions of fruit thing before - was explained as because of high sugar content of fruit, not so good for weight loss/can be bad for the gut etc.

Today I have eaten a banana, grapes, green beans, aubergine and potato curry, mung beans, mixed salad, fruit juice. Not bad, but spolit it all with an enormous slice of victoria sponge cake!

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 21:14

We are very forgiving on this thread and we embrace cake eating in particular

Wombling you poor devil - ds was OP and although he was big he was not as large as your whopper! There was an epic struggle to get him out as well (eventually forceps job)

What milk is he having?

OP posts:
womblingalong · 22/04/2007 21:25

He is on my milk - I am BF. He fed constantly through the night for the first four nights, but has settled down a bit since then, he dropped to 9lb 3oz at 6 days old, but was back up to 9lb 10oz in 3 days, which quite frankly astonished me, as his sister never put on more than 1 oz a week! (she had hidden reflux)

The OP thing is crap isn't it, my dd was too, althouh only 7lb 10oz, and I had an energency section first time too

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 21:30

Crikey moses wombling - good going there girl - eat MORE cake

I am sorry you didn't get the birth you were hoping for.

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 22/04/2007 21:51

congrats anyway

with regards to the 'lots of fruit inc bananas being a bad thing', my dd recently started seeing a dietician who was asking about her snacking, I said 'She loves bananas but obv I only give her one a day', all smug, since my cod-homeopath mother had told me all kinds of stuff about the dangers of a banana overdose

he was completely perplexed. 'Why can she only have one banana?'

um, er, because, my er, mum said, um

harpsichordcarrier · 22/04/2007 21:53

nutritionists are all bonkers and contradict themselves imo.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 21:54

SWMNBN is very anti-banana

I rest my case

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 22/04/2007 21:55

oh sorry yes update on fruit etc

have been for run

have had apples and raisins (again, I am a creature of habit), baked beans, orange, and cauliflower and tomato pasta

this was my challenge. In past years (ie 20 years back) cauli made me feel quite bloated and ill. I am Revisiting It for the sake of my children who have never tasted it due to something that happened when I was 17

will give progress report in morning

oh and a glass of something very nice, which apparently is made from lovely grapes

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 22:02

I think cauliflower is really quite windy

good luck from all of us

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 22/04/2007 22:06

I hate cauliflower, it is white, and hence evil. (Also evil: parsnips)

I have had a stupid amount of fruit and veg today.

Muesli (1)
Blueberry pancakes (1/2)
Pasta with ratatouille (3)
Ominously large quanities of beetroot and orange salad (4)
Watermelon (1)
Pomelo (2)

And a 30-minute workout tape, along with walking etc etc.

I am somewhat dreading the next few days, DS1 was a bit less of a handful today, but still draining - he bursts into tears if you look at him funny, which is most tiring. He wet himself today. And he cycled into the road twice. Tiny quiet roads, but still, ack.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 22:13

Oh god that sounds very trying. Is he a bit poorly?

OP posts:
filthymindedvixen · 22/04/2007 22:13

ok, I'm off tobed with a nice book (not excercise but neccessary. But I need to know, what is pomelo?

NotQuiteCockney · 22/04/2007 22:15

I think he's tired? We had a week at home, but DH was ill, and I was fraught (it was ok, though, lots of hanging out with people). Then insane Easter weekend (yours, wedding, then flight to Ireland). Then flight home and immediate trip to ILs. I do wonder if those visits wear him out? He is centre of attention, but they are hard work. They do not treat each other that respectfully, tbh .

I tried to talk to him about the visit yesterday, but he was upset about something else, so he was upset about the visit, too. I'll try to ask when he's on a more even keel, if that ever happens [hopeful].

NotQuiteCockney · 22/04/2007 22:16

Oh, sorry, pomelo, it's like a grapefruit, but much much nicer. Google for it. Huge, and really lovely. The skin's a bit of a battle, but still ...

Oh, but DS1 may be stopping sucking his thumb. We're using a technique from school, mixed with some ideas from the head of the co-op, who has such a nice way with kids.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 22:20

Oh, I hope things improve. Ds finds inlaws terribly unsettling - says he loves it, and very excited while they are here, but his behaviour is dodgy for a few days afterwards, and he wakes up in the night and stuff

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 22/04/2007 22:22

I turn into mad cooking woman, and DH ... well, like everyone, he seems to turn into a teenager when his parents are around. We're glad they're gone.

Although they may be back rather soon if we go to Paris.

TooTicky · 22/04/2007 22:43

Cappucino - thanks. Nice to know there is somebody friendly up there - a bit of a connection - my grandparents and dad are dead and Circumstances are preventing me from being in touch with my half-siblings so I feel a bit sniffly at times. Shame about the shop though.

FMV - Oscar Wilde. Sorry about your shitty day.

Filly - sorry about that shitty woman.

Right, have had......orange, banana, kiwi and melon smoothified. Onion, garlic, leek, cauliflower, tomato, (do lentils count?) souped. And PSB, more cauli, more tomato. And chocolate and banana cake. Vastly better than yesterday anyway.

TooTicky · 22/04/2007 22:44

Oh, and peas

Fillyjonk · 22/04/2007 22:44
