For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

yoo hoo

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 19:15

oh good. then i have def met quota

NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 19:20

I would think both olives and sundried tomatoes count.

I think the rule re: blended isn't that clear. I mean, juicing things obviously removes a lot of their nutrients, fibre, etc etc. But blending doesn't do that much, surely? Certainly my blended soups and smoothies are often quite, well, thick.

I will dig on this sometime, but am quite busy with relatives chaos. (not in any disastrous way, but it's just all a bit busy)

Oh, and DS2 is a bit weird and probably about to come out with the pox.

Oh, yes, the thread: muesli, then guacomole, lettuce, watermelon, refried beans for lunch. Dinner: lots and lots of salad (lettuce, beetroot, seeds, tomatoes, sugar snap peas), also some peas and sweetcorn. Will have a pomelo this evening. Probably long over ten.

Oh, and lots of walking and a good run. Making 3 days in a row of running. I have a burst blister on one instep, the backs of both heels are very tender, I don't know why, and I have managed to chafe one thigh really badly. Oh, and my quads are a tiny bit sore. Whoops. I really need to fix my bike and do that instead for a day, I think. (No running on Monday, I am working at the co-op. And if I run on Tuesday, it's with DS1 beside me on his bike - oooh, he can start on his own now!)

Cappucino, I was born in...um...the hospital. I know I lived on a boat for a bit, and my grandparents lived in Redvers Street. I didn't live there for long, my mother brought me south. My great-grandfather opened Lawsons the toy shop (the one with the rocking horse over the door). Don't know how long you've lived there but my grandmother used to be quite well-known for her bare feet.

Franny, you are so right. I am a crappy looking size 10.

Overrun · 21/04/2007 19:47

I have had a really tasty dinner, which should up my quota. Purple sproutng broccli warm salad with garlic/citrus and anchovvy dressing, and also another warm salad of Jeruselem artichokes/smoked mackerel (sorry if i shouldn't mention that), spring onions, grated carrot, avacado, cherry tomatoes, celery. So I guess that is lot, although. Might snack on some fruit this evening depending on how it goes
Exercise nil point, I'm afraid

sibble · 21/04/2007 20:06

wow you lot chat so much when I'm in bed asleep, it's hard to keep up. Well, nil point on the exercise front on account of DH bu*ering off for the weekend (won't go into it vented on another thread) however did manage a 3 hour outing to the beach but picking up shells at a 2 year olds pace doesn't count I guess . Did OK with food, pineapple, apple, orange, kiwi, nectarine, brocolli, carrots, peas, sweetcorn omg 1 down, will have to put lettuce in salad this lunchtime or revert back to salad. Problem is Autumn is descending here at the rate of knots and the novelty of salads is dying rapidly, need to make some soups I think.

BTW I am still a size 8-10 but am definately not a baywatch babe, all in one swimsuit for me unless in own garden when boobs have been known to fly with the wind. Deflated boobs, a caesarian scar and cellulite city on both thighs is hardly something to brag about. However with clothes on I think I look good for a 40+ old fart. It's got little to do with size and far more about confidence IMO, when I was younger I didn't liek standing out in a crowd or people looking at me, now I just don't care except in a bikini perhaps

FrannyandZooey · 21/04/2007 20:14

Everyone sounds like they are eating fantastic stuff - what a great time of year to be doinf 10 / 10, don't you think?

I have had grapes, pear, apple and raisins for breakfast, apple and banana for snack, zilch for lunch (ate pissed off cheese sandwich when found out inlaws had stopped for chips on way here instead of coming for lunch as arranged), and just had salad of spinach, lettuce, cuc, beetroot and red pepper. Strawberries, grapes and oranges with lemon ice cream for pudding.

What a thread! The length of it! The style discussions! The pirate outfits! The bickering over smoothies!

I know we have had this before (several times). Smoothies do count but because some of the fibre etc has been broken down in the blender, rather than by your digestive system, some of the health benefits are lost. If you want to be all purist about it we would just be eating raw stuff straight from the ground / tree. It is fine to have smoothies but if this is the way you regularly eat your fruit, you may want to consider switching to more whole fruits if you really want the maximum boost to your health.

Fresh smoothies (e.g. home made) are presumably better than industrial, too, right?

(We don't actually eat a lot of smoothies here, I make one every couple of weeks really. They're not a normal source of fruit, any more than banana cake is. Oh, but I do love gazpatcho, and make it with little provocation ...)

FrannyandZooey · 21/04/2007 20:18

NQC did you see the inlaws thread I started for us?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 20:18

nqc - is making own gazpacho easy? i looooooove gazpacho. pls post recipe
ta!

NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 22:01

I find it very easy, but I'm not sure how standard it is.

I just bung together:

  • lots of tomatoes
  • cucumber (peeled, I think?)
  • celery
  • red pepper
  • bit of hot sauce
  • bit of onion or garlic - add carefully, as it's raw, it has a real kick.

Blend the fuck out of it.

Then chill it.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 22:02

I am getting a sore throat and will probably go to bed. DH and I went for a walk together, to get another watermelon - the two of us can happily polish off a medium-sized one between us, tbh. (Never mind how much watermelon the DSes eat - I remember some deeply disturbing nappies from DS2 thanks to his watermelon obsession.)

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 22:09

mmm i love watermelon too.
right! next time im sick im coming to your house to lay on the sofa and be served gazpacho and watermelon. you can consider it training for dealing with teenage dc...

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 22:09

and, by jove, that recipe is dastardly simple. i shall make it tomorrow.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/04/2007 22:11

I keep meaning to cut up the watermelon and eat it with salt, chilli sauce and lime, but I just see watermelon and eat it all instead.

Maybe I should just grate random veg and eat it that way? Very tasty.
