What do we want? Fruit and veg! When do we want it? Now! (10/10 club week 6)

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Morning!

Anyone else up and about yet? I have been awake since 6am! Ds decided that would be a good time to wake up today, punishment for putting him to bed early yesterday i supose!

I am going to get myself an excersise bike! i always liked them best when i used to attend the gym in New Zealand and it means i can put it infront of the telly and ride whilst slobbing out with t.v or a book!

I'm also going to dust off my Davina Power of 3 dvd for the mornings when ds is at playschool then i can put the new bubby when its born in it's bouncy chair and get on with being super healthy! (how sickening!)

Im having toad in the hole for dinner so i will serve it up with loads of vegtables. I am also going shopping! (you would never have guessed!) so i will buy some fruit and veg we need some more as ds and i ate 3 peaches each yesterday

I love the thread title very cheerleaderish!

I will try to pop in sometime today if not this evening, i seem to miss so much during the day!

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 07:41

I had no exercise at all yesterday, but lots of fruit and veg. (Sweet potato doesn't count, right? What about beets? What about squash?)

Everything's quite stressful (DH's work) and my guts have Gone Wrong, but I will try to run today, and will walk, for sure, as today I am trying out the new "walk to DS1's school, pushing an asleep (ha!) DS2" plan. I tried out the walk, it's at least an hour of brisk striding.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 07:44

Morning Charlee, yes the thread title was with your pompoms in mind of course

I am feeling fine today, back is all better, fingers crossed. I have made some changes at the gym to some machines that I enjoy using more, plus dp has been lending me his mp3 thingy which has tripled my enjoyment of being there (oddly, Velvet Underground is very good indeed for working out to).

He usually puts a "surprise" track on for me to find as well as the ones I have asked for. Yesterday it was this

Morning All

Feeling disturbed that sweet potato is not a portion Lets hope for enlightenment soon...

so far 2 apples with my porridge.

Was supposed to go for a bike ride yesterday, with the kids in the chariot, but even though I have a fully fat Fahrrad (cannondale bike) my gears and chain did not get me round the block. dh and his endless tinkering!

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 07:47

Aargh, I think sweet potato counts. It's got loads of good stuff in. Ditto squash and - beets? What's that? Beetroot? Beetroot counts! It's only potato that doesn't.

I hope your guts improve, NQC. How did your blanket sewing go?

OP posts:
Papillon · 11/09/2006 07:54

....bottled beetroot - 7 slices or 3 baby whole

Sweet potato

glad to hear your back is better boss.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 11/09/2006 08:03

hmmm.

yesterday was an interesting day from a fruit and veg pov.

It was ds' b'day party.

So I had raisins, apricots and banana, but encased in the fruit of the cocoa tree and lots of sugar....ooooh it was lovely, and there was a low take up so, in the interests of my fruit and veg consumption, I ate quite a lot of it.

Um....quite a lot of blackberries....and stawberries..and grapes...and tomatoes....

but really lots of potatoes because we were at the allotment, and part of the fun was digging up potatoes

I really know how to throw a kids party, eh? Wholemeal banana cake and potato digging. Twas fab.

Charleesunnysunsun · 11/09/2006 08:06

Apparently The Sweet Potato or Kumera as our friends down under call it is the 'in' vegtable! acording to Tesco's mag!

Very stylish NQC!

Papillon · 11/09/2006 08:10

Kumera has a stronger flavour and is standard tucker in NZ, so not sure its stylish down there. Charlee when did you live in NZ? I am from there, but live in Switzerland now for 5.5 years.

(makes careful note to politely decline birthday invitations from Fillyjonk in the future)

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 08:17

Hmm, the UK site says potatoes and related starchy foods like yams (which are sweet potatoes, yes?) don't count.

Anyway, yesterday I had two big grapefruit, two small punnets of blackberries, tea included lots of salad, and lots of squash and sweet potato, and I made a cake full of orange and squash too. (And ran out of white flour and had to use 2/3 wholemeal, and couldn't tell the difference! So will be doing it all wholemeal next time!)

The blanket raising was lovely. Cake went down very well, too, with everyone but my MIL.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 08:20

Oh, I am apparently going running this morning, haven't run since Friday, so that's good. The only tricky bit will be making sure I eat before picking up DS2, as I often forget to eat in the morning, and with my afternoon busy with walking and school pick up and so on ...

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 11/09/2006 08:33

God, I really want to go running again.

Could now manage a quick run in the evenings.

But have buggered up my ankle. also need proper shoes, really, tescos crappest are not really up to the job.

Pan1 · 11/09/2006 10:01

hi all!! Nice shiny new thread!

One portion so far (a BJ) and a day to be had working in garden!!

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 10:44

Um ... since when did a BJ count as a portion?

Or is it some other sort of BJ we're talking about?

I've had a huge run. And some muesli. Will have left-over tagine, and no doubt some fruit.

Fillyjonk, the shoe thing is kinda crucial. I think you can be a bit relaxed about shoes if your knees etc are good, if you take it easy, and if you only run on softish surfaces (e.g. grass or sand, not tarmac). That being said, I wouldn't consider running in Tesco shoes, and I went to a specialist store and found the shoes cheaper than trendy shoes (although I've never heard of the brand, and don't think they have any celebrity spokespeople, so clearly they are fake trainers).

Pan1 · 11/09/2006 10:59

Sorry, NQC, blender job - from last thread. A short hand, and saves listing BJ content.

Yes, proper runnung shoes are vital, as is avoiding hard surfaces....

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 11:00

Ah, right, that makes sense.

I should find something to do with the slightly ripe pears in the fridge, maybe the blender is the solution to that ...

Papillon · 11/09/2006 11:22

Glad you asked about BJ NQC was wondering too!! Was there not a mention that the fibre breakdown of a blender reduced portion amounts?

I have bought a truckload of fruit and vege at the market and have lovely huge yellow plums for this afternoon.

Papillon · 11/09/2006 11:44

Further to full moon beer sightings, I have just seen, that the bread I bought today is called...

FitPan

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 11:54

Oh god I am not sure I can continue as thread dictator when my authority is being constantly undermined on issues of vegetality

where precisely is this mention of yams, NQC?

going to write my own list of veg and link to it

ruddy seeds

ruddy sweet potatoes

OP posts:
Pan1 · 11/09/2006 11:57

yes, paps, it appears one can stuff one's blender with fruitees, but it all still counts as only one portion, due to the fibre question. Not totally convinced as to the reasons ,but.....

Fitpan! Ha! Lucky, lucky you!! Hope it is nice and tasty, with a firm crust.

Papillon · 11/09/2006 11:58

its the lists incapabilities Franny and not yours... I mean they list Beetroot only in its canned form ffs!

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 11:58

Oh sorry Pan I had nodded off there

Look I found this on Wiki

"In 1992, the Center for Science in the Public Interest compared the nutritional value of sweet potatoes to other vegetables. Considering fiber content, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium, the sweet potato ranked highest in nutritional value. According to these criteria, sweet potatoes earned 184 points, 100 points over the next on the list, the common potato."
