What do we want? Fruit and veg! When do we want it? Now! (10/10 club week 6)

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

More than happy to argue merits of sweet potato. Have some experience of said vegetable as dh is kiwi and adores 'kumera' as it is known, it also featured during speeches at our wedding so feel affinity towards it.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:25

In answer to your exercise question, welshmum the idea is that we aim to do 10 mins extra, beyond what our normal routine is, but we have all interpreted the rule differently. NQC already ran for about 3 hours a day so she is on orders to do less Pan just sits around shirtless and calls it exercise. I go to the gym but only 3 times a week and do bugger all on the other days. So just do what you think will suit you.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:27

NQC we would love that and ds will eat anything at all, I can't actually think of a time he has not eaten something that someone else has cooked for him.

And yeah, there's normally less bickering, but more ... lewdness ... around here .

Just so you're warned. I don't know why extra fibre makes (some) people randy, but it apparently does.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:28

Oh I am not crazy about hot spices though, and nor is he.

Would you have any ideas about how to avoid screwing up my back with these weights again, NQC? I keep meaning to ask you.

OP posts:
welshmum · 11/09/2006 12:28

maybe I could walk even more vigorously.....
Although am about to add another 10 mins to walk as dd starts school next week so maybe I'll count that.
Thanks for welcome

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 12:28

Ah, mine are pleasantly random atm. DS1 flatly refused any tea last night, which is understandable after several days of fearing one's liver is about to be harvested at MILs. DS2 refused to eat as she tried to feed him (ha!), and then came back and had some chicken after she was gone.

They did go mad for sugar snap peas, though.

Hi Welshmum

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:29

I think it is the dorm / "Breakfast Club" type atmosphere of a slightly closed thread, myself, NQC. People get a bit giddy.

Paps don't leave us please my dear

we need your serenity and grace

What part of your back is troubling you? What kind of lift seems to be bugging it? I used to wear a belt to lift, but that might be a bit too butch for you? The belt is (used to be?) a popular option.

Another option is to pick up some pilates. Very good for core strength, I have to get back to it. Protects your back from all sorts of trouble, and is a really thorough workout, while you mostly lie still and look like you're doing sod all.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:35

Ok, they have pilates here but I think I would have to pay extra on top of my membership (must find out)

It is the muscle alongside one of my ribs, so I think that would be thoracic, yes? The exact same spot was a complete nightmare when pregnant, I was in pain for about 4 months. I am not lifting anything big enough to use a belt I don't think (but it makes me laugh how you always think I am some dainty femme thing - is it the spiders?). I was just doing, erm, those curls where you start with the weights parallel down by your sides and then bring them up erm, lengthways in front of your face. My right bicep is a lot weaker than my left I think and I think maybe my elbow was flying out a bit to compensate. When I tried to correct this I got the thoracic pain, so I stopped.

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:37

ps what are you doing during pilates, then, when it looks like you are doing nothing? Not some ruddy pelvic floor torture is it?

Papillon · 11/09/2006 12:37

Being abit on the lower side HSC this has me shaking abit right now. Apart from your last post Franny it just then seemed I was not welcome

I hope Pan is too...

Gotta go be with my kids, neglecting them is not healthy even if I eat loads of F & V.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 12:38

I don't think you're dainty, you're just femme. Yes, the spiders are a good example!

The belt is mostly about protecting the lower back I think.

The lift you're talking about sounds like a shoulder workout, not biceps (you're only doing biceps if you're bending your arms).

I'd watch your technique, maybe do more lifts with a lighter weight. Oh, or do you have therabands at home? Some gentler shoulder exercises should sort it out.

Arse, must go get DS2 from the co-op, then walk him to DS1's school. That will be fun. Must take milk, and ipod. Oh, and find my keys, and pay the cleaner. Arse.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/09/2006 12:39

Whoops! Wrong room...

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 12:40

Have I missed something? Papillon, of course you're welcome! (What's HSC?)

Pilates is abs and pelvic floor, mostly. But you're doing things quite slowly and carefully, often. And you do do thighs and stuff, too.

Pan1 · 11/09/2006 12:45

Paps IS beautiful and sensitive....Highly Sensitive Child......

whats all of this crashing and slamming, VVV?

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:46

Paps I am terribly sorry that you feel that way, and would like to apologise if anything I have said has made you feel unwelcome. I have just been joking about on here as usual this morning, but have obviously over stepped the mark somewhere. I do hope you can come back as you are a very valued member of the group (as is everyone on here). I love the different personalities on here and think that we all have something to add to the group. I'm CATting you as well to make sure you see my apology.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 12:50

Pan, have I upset you? Is Papillon right?

OP posts:
Pan1 · 11/09/2006 12:56

No, sweetie. I am neither as beautiful or as sensitive as paps.

Do think you were right on the "look it's all about eating more fruit and veg and exercising" rather than the ins and outs of the cats arse in food science. It's a bit of a turn off to plough through that in order to get to where peeps are up to, n'est-ce pas??

FrannyandZooey · 11/09/2006 13:01

Well I don't think it is for me to decide or try to control what people want to talk about on the thread. It's just a support thread for people who want to try to be a bit more healthy. I don't mind if people want to discuss that or even bicker about it, the posts where I have pretended to be cross were just meant in humour.

But I am very sad that Papillon feels badly treated, and I am a bit bewildered by this so will leave well alone for now. Be nice to each other pls folks

OP posts:
Papillon · 11/09/2006 13:20

So its just back slap comedy and to and fro banter? Seems like the undercurrent has been more needling, guess that´s the vibe I have been picking up.

Thanks for not minding my emotional parley, but sensitive often makes "you" the odd one out when it comes to surfing the persona vibrations that make up the web. Will try and be like water off the ducks back and not get caught up in lyrical cluelessness.

blah blah
