For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Fillyjonk do you have your own toilet at home, or do dp and the dcs have to share with you?

Papillon · 16/09/2006 11:56

Hi Filly

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 12:12

Paps

It is lovely to see you

but where are these sprout instrictions, eh? eh?

Right now I am eating far to many bananas for my own good, and franny's tip of the day is just not meeting my needs

Papillon · 16/09/2006 12:57

Sprouts

Equipment

Sprout house
or glass Jar - you can buy germinator Jars

It really can have no lid as long as you rinse the water away Really Well.

Brown Lentils are the easiest sprout and available at the supermarket. Soak the lentils about 8 hours in water. Then pour into sprout house, or if in Jar then pour out most of the water first, then add to Jar.

Rinse them well every 8 - 12 hours. Once ready best put in the fridge. Although they do store well in sprout house. Don´t put sprouts at any time in direct sunlight.

Lentil sprouts are great in soups, salads and on their own. Kids love them - they are like peas.

That is sprouts 101

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 13:21

oh I see, you need to buy something

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 13:21

(thanks paps, will go and find a big jar that looks like the picture)

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 13:28

right, kilner jar plus muslin, what do you reckon?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/09/2006 17:07

80 minutes is because I did morning school run and afternoon school run (normally only do afternoon). Screaming is down to change in schedule, and DS2's desire to make me go in a different direction all the time.

Did a lot of walking today, probably won't do any other exercise. Had dim sum for lunch, but planning giant salad for tea. Might juice some fruit as well?

Papillon · 16/09/2006 17:16

Sounds good Filly

Overrun · 16/09/2006 20:10

Hello all, it seems I was missed . Various things contrived to keep me off this thread for a while. As Papillon said, had bad scare with children, but it was really hassle of cancelled operation and severe pmt which knocked me off the fruit and veg wagon.
All discussed in various threads I might add

FrannyandZooey · 16/09/2006 21:35

Sorry Overrun I have not been around much at all this week, I just noticed you had not been on this thread.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles, and you can always come here for a moan even if you are not doing 10/10 right now.

Today hasn't been good (unless baby octopodes are vegetables?). One from museli, three from salad, one from refried beans, one from guacomole, and one from a smoothie. Seven.

And no real exercise - a very long walk with DS1. I can't tell if I'm coming down with a cold (both boys have really chesty coughs), whether I'm tired from yesterday's mad biking, or just daunted by the week ahead of me.

FrannyandZooey · 17/09/2006 08:43

Octopodes

Oh, speaking of which, does anyone know anything about low blood pressure and what to do about it? Hmm may start thread.

Have had 6 portions already for breakfast and am planning a couple of bananas before I go to the gym.

FMF I am loving your fridgy bargi and allotment soup. I used to have a signature dish called Vegetable Plodge which usually went down well. It was anything found in the fridge, made into a thick type of stew with red lentils and stuff. (psst I still make it now, but call it butternut dhal or something. Dp has not noticed. Yet.)

Hello

Sorry i have been rather absent the past few days i have been vair busy!

It was DS's 2nd birthday on Friday we had a little party in the evening so that was manic! I spent the day spoiling my little man and preparing party ood and blowing up baloons

Then Saturday we got up early and went to the Zoo with the family it was a great day and i did upteen lots of walking! DS seemed to really enjoy himself. It does howeve mean i haven't done alot of fruit and veg eating i have only done about 5 a day so i will have to disipline myself and get munching from tommorrow.

I was really sick last night i woke up feeling dizzy and vair strange luckily i managed to stumble and navigate the stairs to the bathroom beofre throwing up everywhere! yuck i know!

Good to see you back Franny!

I have an extremley busy day tommorrow its DS's EEG and then my hemotology appointment, i have also got FIL's birthday this week and DP's so i will be in and out when i can but i PROMISE as soon as this weeks over i will be more with you!

Papillon · 17/09/2006 12:56

It is teeming down here - I think the rains have arrived.

Have had soup again today, like stone soup it just kept being added to since yesterday. Butternut base for starters with vege, today shitake, red kidney beans, sweet potato and brocolli. Had 2 bowls making me feel very healthy

Franny are you beginning to eat lots of banana, or is that pre gym fodder? - I was just thinking to say to you we need to speak with Filly about her enormous banana consumption! and to encourage her to forage further into the realm of fruit and vege

FrannyandZooey · 17/09/2006 13:05

Charlee I am glad it is not just me who slips into Georgia speak from time to time Shall we have a Louise Rennison clique? Glad ds's party went well - are you recovered from the sickness now?

Papillon bananas seem to be a very good thing to eat before the gym - I am not really that fond of them except in peanut butter sandwiches otherwise. I agree Filly needs to branch out a bit but then as most of my 10 is fruit every day I am not sure if I am the one to tell her...

Right, I'm away laughing on a fast camel

OP posts:
Papillon · 17/09/2006 18:02

I am starting to realise that it is easy to eat the fruit and harder to get the vege. That why I ate loads of soup today. Am going to try and work on bumping the vege up.

Going to eat more red kidney beans now!

Papillon · 17/09/2006 18:09

Here´s a pic of my dd

She will be 3 end of Oct

FrannyandZooey · 17/09/2006 18:37

Papillon I am with you there. Has anyone got any good ideas for how to eat more vegetables without it being a lot of hassle?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 17/09/2006 18:41

I keep meaning to try just grating large amounts of veg (cucumber, cabbage, um, things like that) and eating it with chilli sauce, lime and salt. I had that in Mexico, and it was ace. (Also, watermelon with chilli, lime and salt. Also, papaya or mango with chilli, lime and salt.)

FrannyandZooey · 17/09/2006 18:47

Enjoyed the pic of your dd very much, Paps

Here is a picture of ds for you to see

Have been having coleslaws this week, with tomato, carrot and cucumber - quite quick to make, just posted a tasty dressing on 10/10 recipe thread

Found the soup this weekend really good for loads of vege. Its the season for pumpkins and a way to eat tomatoes and marrow if you have a garden full of them!

FrannyandZooey · 17/09/2006 18:59

I like dips and will happily eat my way through a plate of raw veggies if there is something nice to dip them into

Not sure whether eating large bowl of sour cream each day would be a good idea though
