I don't want to drink today. Anyone else?

Fed up. Drinking far too much on pretty much a nightly basis. Inspired by Dinny's thread last night I've decided to take a one day at a time approach to cutting right back/stopping. I'm posting this because I decide this pretty much every morning but usually give in later in the day - but if I've made some kind of public committment then I have a better chance of sticking at it.

If anyone else would like to join me in not drinking today, that would be lovely.

Thanks! DH drinks far too much. I told him that I wouldn't ask him to stop (again) until I had managed to do it.

moomooland · 12/09/2006 11:07

Hi everyone. I'm defo not drinking tonight again . Feel very positive now about halting this almost nightly wine ritual, at least on weekdays anyway! Slept much better last night too, instead of waking up wide awake around 4am (prob when alco wore off!) and finding it hard to get back into proper sleep. All the best for this evening x

ParanoidAndroid · 12/09/2006 13:41

Can I join in too? I don't drink much but potentially have a health problem which will be affected by alcohol so I need to tackle it now in case I do have this particular condition.

I'm a "open the wine while cooking supper" type of girl, occasionally beer or whisky but usually 2 glasses of wine. Not much, but it's every night and tbh, a complete habit now.

You guys are doing so well. Well done.

So are u off the booze for good or drinking only for special occasions?

I am still drinking about 3 bottles of wine a week. I am going to Join u guys soon and not drink at all.

Dropinthe · 12/09/2006 14:58

Am watching this thread and thinking!!!

dinny · 12/09/2006 18:44

hello, glad to see some new recruits! I'm not drinking tonight. just love the quality of sleep - even a glass of wine affects mine, I think.

Alexa, I am still drinking what I want on friday and Saturday, think if i stop that I'll jack it all in and have wine every night! but last Friday I just had 3 Pimms and 2 glasses of wine an Saturday some wine with dinner (1/2 bottle maybe). am being strict with self in week - kind of "not on a school night" for me. off to yoga in a mo, lovely.

Berrie · 12/09/2006 19:30

This is hard, my first night inspired by seeing this thread this morning!
Looked at the wine in tesco tonight but was good. Trouble is we make our own and there are bottles full in the garage. Little easier to resist than the tesco wine though!
It's that time of night isn't it. But I'm strong! (I think)

dinny · 12/09/2006 21:56

How are you doing, Berrie? I'm just in the door and am having nice cuppa. How's everyone else?

zippy539 · 13/09/2006 07:40

Morning all.

How did you all get on last night? I actually managed to watch one of those diet doctor programmes - usually I flick over cause they only draw attention to my prodigious wine consumption . But last night I was able to watch very smugly indeed . All I need to do now is cut out the sly fags which seem to have replaced the alcohol... ...

Okay ... I'm not drinking today. Anyone else?

OP posts:
Berrie · 13/09/2006 07:40

I did it! Yeaaah!
Had a lot of trouble getting to sleep but slept through until the alarm for the first time in ages! The hardest part was the time when I would normally have a glass after the children went to bed but once I hadn't had that it got easier. DH didn't help by offering me a beer but I hadn't told him about this and he didn't comment. He probably remembered my threat to ask him to stop once I could do it.
How did everyone do? How many days have you been doing this now?

zippy539 · 13/09/2006 07:55

That's brilliant Berrie! I love it that you haven't told DH what you're up to.

Last night was my ninth night without alcohol which is an all time world record. But when I started this thread (and still now) I'm only thinking about it as one day at a time. I never would have believed I could stop for this length of time. But similarly, I never would have believed how fantastic I feel.

Are you going to do it again tonight?

OP posts:
Berrie · 13/09/2006 08:08

Absolutly! I've just noticed that I don't have a headache. 9 days that's grea.I mean not to drink every Monday (and diet) but I never have the motivation come 7 pm (2pm for diet), this thread is a great idea!

Saz73 · 13/09/2006 09:07

Did it again, it's only my 2nd night. Noticed a difference this morning, when DH alarm went off just before 6 I actually got up with him. I felt so awake, normally after a drink in the evening i feel really groggy in the morning.

Well done for starting this thread. It's great to beable to share things.

moomooland · 13/09/2006 10:03

Made it through another night, my hardest part is after kids in bed too as "me-time" had managed to become "wine-time" far too often. Well done zippy - nine days would be all-time record for me too. Ashamed to admit that i congratulated self for being able to enjoy my book properly when i got to bed last night, prev was too "tired" to focus after usual half bottle consumption of an evening or would forget where i read up to. Issue to tackle this evening is - Don't replace wine with crappy food in front of tv. Feel like i'm on a bit of a journey here, loving the thread. So i'm not drinking tonight either.

dinny · 13/09/2006 10:21

morning everyone. had a very productive night - went to yoga class, have started doing Flylady decluttering routine and watched the E4 Lost (HOW fab?) didn't even cross mind to have any wine. felt great this morning and have already blitzed the house. it's the biz no drinking on school nights! oh, and my pot belly flattening!

Berrie · 13/09/2006 19:51

Struggling tonight, anyone out there who can help.
Deep shame - only my second night!

ParanoidAndroid · 13/09/2006 19:54

Hang on in there Berrie. It's my second night too, and I'm still drink free. I don't know what time you go to bed but I've worked out that I only have about an hour and half to go (how sad is that!) so I'll be fine I'm sure. Put the kids to bed now, listen to them read, lights out for them by 9pm, tidy the kitchen, sort book bags out etc for tomorrow, make a cup of tea and then get me into bed. No time for a drink see??!!

Berrie · 13/09/2006 20:04

Sounds good to me!
I'm still dry!I've got a bottle cooling but I feel there's a chance for me yet to resist! Kids already in bed, just ironing DH's shirt, then I can sit down ...

Sanity · 13/09/2006 20:12

Yeah....my kind of people, I am trying very hard to stop drinking in the week....then blow out at the weekend!!! I managed last night with only 1 bottle of diet coke....I am looking around the house tonight trying very hard not to open my sloe gin....I had twins 15months ago....and my daugher asked if I had filled my baby tummy with beer, cos I still had it!!!

naswm · 13/09/2006 20:23

avoiding this thread as more often thatn not dont succeed and

Berrie · 13/09/2006 20:23

Love that!
Did you make your own sloe gin or is it Gordans? We have a garage full of our finest Elderberry, Raisin and Malt wine. It's very strong and very delicious if you haven't been drinking little else for months. We are currently making this years batch. 75 litres!

dinny · 13/09/2006 20:32

have you succumbed yet, Berrie? hae just had v stressful bedtime (ds screamed himself to sleep on bedroom floor, feel dreadful). will give it another 15 mins and go and lift him into bed (unless by some miracle he put himself back in - unlikely!)

am soo tempted to have glass of wine and fag! have put kettle on for a hot choc instead...

naswm · 13/09/2006 20:37

diiny you are an inspirateion.... But I dont like hot chocolate though

Sanity · 13/09/2006 20:41

Hi Berrie...home made of course, bought up on the stuff...can't you guess! all our weekends as kids was spent picking berries, leaves, nettles, roses, dandelions blah blah blah...then soaking the old labels off bottles etc....and we have still got some 1977 blackberry wine...oooh you don't need a lot of that to knock your socks off! Off tomorrow to pick this years sloes, going to try and speed the process by adding last years sloes into this years....instead of covering with chocolate!
