For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Ma'am....I hold a grapefruit in my hand, and a packed gym bag lies at my feet............new thread, new clothes......

Overrun · 14/08/2006 08:50

hello Franny and Pan and welcome Pruni.
So far today I have had big glass of orange juice, bowl of museli and an apple, so 3 and counting.
All this after the night from hell, my ds1 managed to be sick over me twice last night. Two of my three were sick, ds1 ran into my room at 3am and was sick on me and we sorted him out plus bedclothes you know the drill, settled him and then we had to do it all again at 5ish.
One of the twins was also sick, but seems fine this morning, ds1 still in bed so must feel bad.
Have to say am filled with trepidation as its hard work with my three at the best of times, if one or more are ill it really gets hard core!

chestnutty · 14/08/2006 09:23

I'd like to give it a go. Its been my aim for a while to eat better food. Just looked at the portion list though. Never eaten 3 tablespoons of peas in my life!
Brillant list though , Will print it off.
just goin to get my first pc of fruit + some juice.BTW have read somewhere that you shoul eat more veg than fruit. There is a challenge.

fullmoonfiend · 14/08/2006 09:32

Overrun - big sympathy to you...Stripping beds definitely counts as extra exercise in my opinion , so snuggle up on the sofa with a big bar of fruit 'n'nut today

I'm on a roll - ate big bowl of melon and strawberries for breakfast with glass of apple juice. That's 3 before 9am (and the first time breakfast has passed my lips in years)

FrannyandZooey · 14/08/2006 09:32

Welcome to Pruni (Pruni! you're back!) and chestnutty, and welcome back Pan and Overrun.

Chestnutty, I didn't want to hear that about the veg as am Chief Fruit Eater of the thread.

Overrun, oh no! I hope your day is improving. Think how much exercise you can get running for buckets etc

Pan, what exactly are you doing at this alleged gym, or do you just walk about with the bag?

Oh and morning fmf - I find when I eat this way, I have a really good appetite for breakfast, as opposed to when I eat too much stodge in the evening and wake up still feel full and lethargic.

Could try, but I would really need help with meal ideas to up the veg and fruit. Basic problem being that I just don't like them all that much.
So, who can share ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Dinner must be capable of being prepared either very quickly or in advance and warmed up, and of being eaten by a 4 and 2 yr old
Lunch must take no more than 3 minutes to prepare (I currently make one cheese sandwich - hopeless nutritionally I know).
breakfast is probably my most healthy meal - bowl of oats with banana and milk. Every day.

elliott · 14/08/2006 10:52

Ah, exercise. If walking counts then I already do at least an hour a day. If it is 10 minutes MORE than I do already, hmmmm. Get very bored by Exercises.

Overrun · 14/08/2006 11:16

hello to all newcomers. Like what you are saying about the veg Chestnutty as I love them. Not a fruit slut as Franny more a veg freak, although do like fruit. It seems to go so quickly in our house.
Thanks for all the tea and sympathy. What made the whole thing even more annoying (not that I was annoyed with the chidren) was that all their bedding incl mattress protectors had been put on clean that eveing
The only thing I can suggest Elliot is soup. You have to make a big vat of it but then you have a quick lunch ready for you. My spanish sil does lovely gazapcheo (how do you spell that?), and blends it up and serves it in pint glasses with some ice cubes. Really nice when its hot. Smoothies are also good, popular with fruit sluts everywhere.
I tend to use a banana but then anything goes after that, I use a mixture of fruit juice and greek yog for mine.
Hope this helps.
Last bit of vomit information I promise. All their sick was blue after eating huge amounts of blackberries for tea I am truely suffering for this thread

elliott · 14/08/2006 11:20

yes, soup is a good idea. Will have to try and Get Organised.

FrannyandZooey · 14/08/2006 11:47

Oh Overrun and slightly at the blackberry vomit. Crikey, will it ever wash out?

Weclome elliot, your breakfast sounds great, could you add a glass of orange juice, and say a chopped apple (or any other fruit you like the taste of) and some raisins to have with your oats? That would make 4 for starters. If you like bananas I would have another one later in the day for a snack.

I am a bit slacker on the veg myself, but a lovely way to eat lots is just to roast a load of veg with some olive oil in a baking tray - things like mushrooms, courgette, aubergine, peppers, butternut squash all cut in strips are delicious. You can eat it with couscous or rice or have it in a pitta with some sour cream - or even cold the next day with some balsamic vinegar in a sandwich.

Also do your exercise how you want to. If you want to add extra, go ahead, if you are happy you are doing enough already, then fine. Me and Pan seem to be the only ones struggling with the exercise part so far and he is apparently going to the gym which just leaves me

Aviatrix, I would try to attend a class or gym where the instructor could show you how to do stomach exercises properly, if possible. NQC is off to Canada today, but says she will be online sometimes, so she might give some advice too. At the class I go to we just do tiny little movements, not great big sit ups. Lie on your back with your legs bent, lay your head back into your cupped hands, and just lift a quite small distance, keeping your head in line with your body, keeping your chin off your chest, and elbows back not pulling forwards. You should feel the pull in your stomach straight away.

The other thing that's meant to be good for the waist area is hula hooping, which I am determined to start again this week. I like it because it is fun and I can feel it all around my stomach and sides the next day so must be having some effect. I worked up from not being able to hula at all, to now being able to go for 10 mins without stopping so it is worth a try

Overrun · 14/08/2006 12:44

stop smirking Franny thats just not nice In answer to your question i was soaking bed linen in buckets in the kitchen throughout the night and it looks like we have got away with it.
Ilove the hula hooping idea btw, where did you get yours? Probably a toy shop.
I think my waist could def do with some more definition.
Have now had humungous bowl of celery and onion and rice soup so will count that as 3 portions.
Will need to let my lunch settle before embarking on another frenzied 10 mintutes of excercise, well maybe not frenzied!

FrannyandZooey · 14/08/2006 12:53

Sorry Overrun

I truly feel for you, it was just so dreadful it was almost comic

I got my hula hoop from a schools supply catalogue but I am told that to get the best effect you should use a weighted hoop, specially designed for exercising. I presume you can get them from sports shops? If you find one let me know because I may get one.

I have had 7 portions already

all fruit though, no veg

OP posts:
Overrun · 14/08/2006 12:57

had greek salad (2 portions of veg) and currant toast ( 1?)for lunch.
Have been decorating this morning so I'm sure 1/2 hours rubbing down counts for my excerise.

FrannyandZooey · 14/08/2006 13:31

I'm HUN-GRY

wake up ds

Panboy · 14/08/2006 14:31

ok.Lunch was...a tuna steak with...half a bag of curly kale, big bits of a savoy, a sliced carrot (all steamed) and 7 strawberries...6 for the day so far..am begining to root.
At imaginary gym with imaginary personal trainer did all sorts of new exercises - looking at my body from a new angle...no, I mean literally! - covers my exercise quota for the month!! (newbies on this thread will note a theme of Frances consistently and tastelessly attempting to undermine my efforts..only she knows the reason..

Did think we should all start smoking Lebanese 'black'. This is so 1.it will help re-invigorate their beleaugered economy, and 2. It means we would be ingesting a vegetable matter, and so contributing to the overall tally..i.e one spliff = 1 portion...opinions?

Overrun · 14/08/2006 14:54

surely hash cookies would mean that we were "ingesting more vegatable matter", smoking wouldn't really count
Off to do my exercise, as all I have done today is sit and watch dvds with slightly under the weather chilren and spend time on MN when I manage to escape

fullmoonfiend · 14/08/2006 17:28

ah yes panboy - but only if it's organic

gothicmama · 14/08/2006 17:32

thought I'd check this out as intrigued by title now deffo going to follow it, as will help to kick me intop gear (nothing to do with organic black)

fullmoonfiend · 14/08/2006 17:40

Am puttin this on the thread to remind me - drink more WATER!!

heiferjamese · 14/08/2006 18:11

Am I too late to join????

I really need an energy boost... I am constantly knackered...

Looking forward to getting of my rather large arse and making a start on this....

I have decided to do 10 mins on the exercise bike and hopefully build it up each day (even 1 minute more each day would help).....

Don't think 10 portions of fruit and veg will be a problem, but I also need to cut of 10 portions of crap every day!!!!

Also intend to drink 10 glasses of water a day... actually think I will find that hard, so maybe start with 5 and build up....

Looking forward to starting tomorrow morning. Just got to go and dusk of the exercise bike now...
