Ovarian cyst

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 17:23

Just had scan results and GP told me they found a 5.7 cm cyst on my left ovary. I've been getting mid cycle bleeding and though I was menopausal!

Anyone had one of these.?I did google but it's too scary.

I'm now waiting for a gynae appointment.

Yes my next appointment is with gynae in oncology dept. over a week to wait so nothing I can do til then.

Im expecting that they will do a biopsy and another scan. I've to get more blood tests next week so they will have the results by then too. Not sure whether to take dh with me or go alone. He may need to save his holidays.

I'm veering between fear and mild panic/pretending it's not happening focusing on carrying on as normal.

Thanks for the hand holding and keep us updated x

piratecat k999
Reading this with disbelief as the same has happened to my DD at the age of 11. Never heard of it happening to anyone else.

It was a very traumatic time & her extreme pain was dismissed until they discovered that her ovary had twisted 6 times and there was no saving it, it had to be surgically removed.

Procedures at our local hospital have now been changed and all females experiencing abdominal pain such as this are now ultrasound scanned as a matter of course. Too late for my DD but I hope that this might prevent it from happening to someone else.

Sorry to slightly hijack your thread, FlyingDucky and I hope that you are feeling much better very soon. Please don't rely on Dr Google! I know though, its easier said than done and I would always be the first to look as well.

K999 · 08/02/2014 21:14

Chocolatelime - it is traumatic. I knew after DDs
Ultrasound that they suspected cancer as she was sent for a chest X-ray and had bloods taken. What upset me was that GP dismissed it as period pains for months. Had she physically examined dd she would have felt it Sad

chocolatelime · 08/02/2014 21:28

Yes we were sent away by GP as well, when she should have been bluelighted to hospital. It's hard to get over it all really even though quite some time has now passed. I think of all the things I could have done differently often.

K999 · 08/02/2014 21:34

me too. I had constant guilt Sad

but just glad that she now goes for regular scans etc.

hope your dd is ok Smile

Just bumping this to ask, those of you who had cysts/endo removed, how long was it between first appointment with gynaecologist and having the op ??

I'm in pain all day every day and night and I'm taking painkillers like sweets. My first app with gynae is 26th feb

FlyingDucky · 16/02/2014 08:04

I'm bumping this too theoriginalnutcracker. I'm wondering about that too. Sorry to hear you're in pain.

OP posts:
elliepac · 16/02/2014 13:13

originalnutcracker my situation may be slightly different to yours as I ended up in hospital with the pain from cysts. However I had first gynae appointment on Monday and op has been booked for 10th March so only 4 weeks in between. If the pain is really bad you must explain how bad it is.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 16/02/2014 21:00

Thanks ellie. I hope mine is so quick then.

I only got 3 hours sleep last night due to the pain and thats becoming the norm. My mum is coming to my appointment with me and she's seen what I am like when in pain so we will both be able to say how bad it is.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 16/02/2014 21:04

Flying duck, I was wondering what happens at a first appointment, sounds like alot.

FlyingDucky · 17/02/2014 17:12

I will report back tomorrow throriginalnutcracker. my appointment is in the afternoon.

Good Luck Smile

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/02/2014 22:28

From first pain to op was about three months, but that included a trip to A&E after a fortnight, then two weeks of stupid test results going missing, then a referral to BUPA, after which it was all very quick indeed.

It was a scary time of course but now I hardly think of it.

I had four scars - the camera hole, the two instrument holes, and the hole where he actually got the thing out, which was obviously the largest - and now I can only find one of them, the camera one which is in my navel. And that's 1cm across and totally white, so no big deal at all.

And like I said, even though he had to remove 90% of that ovary, I conceived both DC2 and DC3 from the 10% that remained, and I was told that even having a whole ovary removed scarcely makes any difference to your fertility/hormones etc. Bodies are amazing things.

Good luck all those waiting.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/02/2014 22:29

A thought - I had to have a vaginal ultrasound for the consultant to get a good look at the mass. I wasn't prepared for that (had DS1 with me in a pram Confused). The next time I was prepared, and it made all the difference.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 18/02/2014 01:06

Tbh there isn't anything I wouldn't let them do at my appointment. If they offered to whip the cysts out there and then I'd jump for joy lol.

One thing that has annoyed me is that people have assumed that because I have 3 dc, I will be more than happy to get rid of eveything and it's no big deal.

FlyingDucky · 18/02/2014 17:07

Ok. Just back

So my first appointment with gynaecologist went ok.
I had another internal ultrasound which took about ten minutes. Then an interview with consultant, nurse and a trainee. He took my history and asked about symptoms.

Then I went into another room for swabs to be taken. I was then told I would have an MRI scan and more blood tests to look for tumour indicators.

I have another appointment in. 2 weeks to discuss results of MRI and bloods.

I was so relieved I didn't need a needle biopsy as I feared! Still slightly nervous of MRI as I'm claustrophobic.
Anyone had an MRI? What's it like?

OP posts:
TheOriginalNutcracker · 18/02/2014 17:51

Glad it went ok FD but ARGH at more waiting.

I've never had an MRI but my daughter has had a few. She had music played through headphones whilst in the machine as it is quite loud, but she found it ok.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 18/02/2014 17:51

Do you know when your MRI is ?

FlyingDucky · 18/02/2014 20:05

Not yet. They will send a letter out. Should be within the next week.

OP posts:
HoratiaDrelincourt · 18/02/2014 21:24

I've failed to have an MRI. If you are anxious about enclosed spaces it is recommended that you arrange a diazepam prescription in advance with your GP. You take one the night before, one in the morning and one just before you go in, IIRC.

I'd recommend not opening your eyes, tbh. It feels a bit weird going in but I only panicked when I actually saw it from the inside.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/02/2014 21:56

Hi, checking back here to see how you're all doing.

Flying many, many people have this fear of the MRI chamber.
Phone them before the appointment and see what they suggest. (I have no idea if you can go feet first into the chamber, as it;s your middle that they're concentrating on)

I'll be back .

FlyingDucky · 24/02/2014 19:57

Still waiting on appointment 70.

I've looked at a few youtube vids. Think I can do it. It's only for a short time. Right...

OP posts:
TheOriginalNutcracker · 24/02/2014 20:18

My appointment with the Pelvic pain clinic in the gynae dept is this Wed.

I'm not exactly nervous, more worried that I'll come out no better off than I went in, and my period is due next week which scares the life out of me Sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/02/2014 23:29

Hi Flying
Had a blood test (and have to see GP for results next week)
Then my scan is next Thursday (6th)

I've got Left sided pain and pushing (the small foot in my side Smile ) and
horrendous backache (but that's an ongoing problem, I can do without it though)
I'm hoping they find something on the scan, or I'll be gobsmacked and Confused

Good Luck Nutcracker hope you get answers.
