Ovarian cyst

Just had scan results and GP told me they found a 5.7 cm cyst on my left ovary. I've been getting mid cycle bleeding and though I was menopausal!

Anyone had one of these.?I did google but it's too scary.

I'm now waiting for a gynae appointment.

I know! Grin a bulky cervix indeed!, I actually asked' oh, how is it supposed to feel'. I don't recall her answer Hmm.

This is why the NHS is so brilliant, wheels put in motion and all was dealt with, I can't fault any of my care, apart from the shite hospital food but that's another story.

< could make a good AIBU thread, haha.>

In had a grapefruit size dermoid cyst removed about two years ago. They had to remove my ovary and part of my Fallopian tube too as the cyst was completely wrapped round it all.

I had been suffering from pain, bloating and IBS type symptoms for about 10 years. I went to see the consultant thinking I had a prolapse. I was booked in for a procedure to out a mesh sling under my uterus to sort out the prolapse, but when they started operating on me, they found the big cyst which was pushing my uterus down and creating all the symptoms of prolapse as well as compressing my bowel and causing IBS symptoms. My consultant was more than a little surprised to find it there as he hadn't been able to feel it through palpating my stomach and hadn't scanned me as I had obvious evidence of prolapse.

It was removed through laporascopic surgery, by draining and collapsing the cyst and then removing it through an extra hole made in my tummy.

I was given details of the biopsy, which showed some skin and hair cells, but no teeth or bone (thank goodness!).

I was very sore after the operation for a couple a weeks and stayed off work for. 4 weeks as I work with 3 and 4 year olds, so needed to be fully fit before I went back.

Littlefish · 05/02/2014 19:35

I, not In.

nikkihollis · 05/02/2014 19:36

I didn't have a biopsy. All I had was 2 transvaginal ultrasounds and that was it. I had polyps 2 years ago and they were removed (with no anaesthetic of any sort) and biopsied but were fine.

My periods with both the polyps and the cyst were horribly heavy. Literally daredn't leave the house on day 2 (flooding and with big clotty things!) and then very heavy but more 'containable'. And pain and spotting and heavy discharge when I ovulated. And spotting after sex. Once the polyps were removed everything was normal again and same once the cyst had shrunk.

Littlefish · 05/02/2014 19:37

put a mesh, not -out a mesh.

Bloody autocorrect!

SoulJacker · 05/02/2014 19:38

I had midcycle bleeding and very heavy periods which resolved after the cyst had ruptured. Wouldn't recommend the ruptured ovarian cyst route though, although morphine is lovely :-D

Littlefish · 05/02/2014 19:38

Maybe I didn't have a biopsy then - the cyst material was examined after it was removed. Are biopsies done before an operation?

ilovemydoggy · 05/02/2014 19:41

I had one on each ovary. Caused me loads of pain and took ages to find out what it was, in the end was very simple op done by keyhole in a day. took me about a week to recover. Hope all goes well for you.

K999 · 05/02/2014 19:46

Dd1 had dermoid ovarian cyst. She had been in pain for a few months but as she had started her periods the GP put it down to period pains. She was then rushed into hospital in severe pain. She had an ultrasound and MRI where they discovered that she had a 23 cm dermoid cyst Shock she had emergency surgery to remove it that night. Unfortunately it had wrapped itself around her ovary and Fallopian tube so she had to have them removed too. She was only 12 at that time Sad

She now has 6 monthly checks. Last one she had they discovered a 6cm cyst on her one remaining ovary. She was booked in for another MRI but before that happened was rushed in again! The cyst had burst. It's been such a worry!!

YouStayClassySanDiego · 05/02/2014 19:56

I would add Flying that endo doesn't show in a scan, it's surgery that reveals that sneaky bugger !

Of course, you probably don't have that it but bare it in mind.

lolaisafuckertoo · 05/02/2014 20:04

Interesting about IBSEN symptoms. I have cyst. Pain etc. fucking agony for two weeks at its worst. Gynae said I had impacted fecal material and encouraged lots of pooing an enema and anything else apart from a grenade. Had a hysterectomy 4 years ago endorse and fibroids. Sex is a non starter. Pain feels relentless and the vision of myself self administering an enema will never leave. I feel quite frustrated. I am sure the small cust is playing holy havoc but not sure which way to go

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 20:58

Ladyquinoa glad to hear it was straightforward for you. Did you know about them before you became pregnant?

Youstayclassy Grin go on, I dare you!

Thanks for sharing your stories. It helps a lot to hear I'm not the only one with this to deal with and that it can be resolved reasonably quickly.

Its sad to hear how young some people have been.

Ruptured cyst sounds very painful. Is there anything you can do to avoid that happening?

Was anyone advised to stop exercise?

OP posts:
K999 · 05/02/2014 21:03

Not sure about stopping exercise but when dd was rushed in it was after PE at school. She had asked to sit out as she was in pain but the teacher said no Angry needless to say I followed this up with a strongly worded complaint!

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 21:07

Shock your poor dd. How traumatic for her. How is she now? Is she still being scanned every 6 months?

OP posts:
K999 · 05/02/2014 21:13

Yes. Six monthly scans. I just keep my fingers crossed every time we go. But if,at the next one, they discover another cyst, I'm going to ask about freezing eggs. I realise it may seem a bit ott but she's so young and only has one ovary left. I suppose it can't help to ask Smile

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 21:18

I don't think that's ott. Its sensible to think ahead and ensure the best chance should she want children in the future.

I really hope things improve for her.

Thanks Flying Smile

I have loads of the bastards Grin My ovaries look like bunches of grapes. I can feel it through my skin

Had a large (grapefruit sized) dermoid cyst removed two years ago. It had gunk and hair in it (lovely!), and ruptured during the surgery. I came close to loosing the ovary - bearing in mind my tube was also twisted, and there were other cysts going on too - but they managed to save it. Because it ruptured, they had to 'rinse out' my insides. All this meant was I woke up with a drain for the fluid in one of the incision points.

Done by keyhole surgery, have gone tiny scars on either side of my abdomen, and my belly button looks fabulous Wink Have since had another op too.

Don't worry if you can help it - the idea is much scarier than the reality.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 05/02/2014 21:31

Voldys I had a drain, fuck me, the removal of that felt as bad as childbirth for 10 horrendous seconds!

OP, all was well afterwards , trust Wink

poorbuthappy · 05/02/2014 21:31

They found 1 at my 20 week scan.
I was scanned every 2 weeks from then on but because the bloods were clear they didn't risk taking it out whilst I was pregnant.
Booked for a section at 38 weeks. DD1 born naturally at 37 weeks.
6 months cyst the size of a watermelon weighing 5lbs removed. Also lost right ovary and fallopian tube.

3 year later conceived id twins naturally. Born at 34 weeks. All fine.

Funniest moment - emcs with twins - surgeon opened me up (not read notes) and enquired in a high voice - oh have you had work done before??
Grin

VoldysGoneMouldy · 05/02/2014 21:42

Classy Mine didn't turn, but was a bit like "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?". She was pulling so hard, I was pretty sure she was going to put her feet up on the side of the bed and heave it out. Weirdest feeling in the world.

Then-DP watched it in some kind of "I don't want to see but I can't look away" state, his face afterwards was a picture Grin

VoldysGoneMouldy · 05/02/2014 21:42

Turn? Hurt. Idiot.

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 21:52

Bloody hell! Voldysgonemouldy and classy. Thanks for that Shock

Poor unhappy that sounds massive! Happy to hear you were able to conceive and give birth to your twins. Grin at surgeon.

Hopefully I will get some good anecdotes from this situation

I have in my possession a form to request an Ultrasound scan for the very same symptoms. (Went to GPs today)

Am I glad I found this thread?

FlyingDucky · 05/02/2014 22:30

That is a coincidence 70.

What symptoms have you had? When did they start?
