Drugs. Which have you tried?

Everyone's talking about drugs this morning.

These days I'm a regular user of caffeine and alcohol.

I used to be T Total and caffeine-free in the nineties but I did enjoy cannabis regularly and ecstasy and acid less regularly.

I can't imagine taking those these days (with the possible exception of the odd spliff Wink, because I'm too busy with the kids and can't afford to step out of the real world these days.
I also wonder how I'll feel if and when my kids decide to experiment.

How about you?

Alcohol is my only vice - was cerainly around a lot of people who did drugs at university, but I wasn't one of them.

I'v never smoked - maybe seeing my father spend 10 years dying of smoking related illnesses when I was a teenager put me off.

Enid · 01/03/2006 14:40

ah alcohol and cigarettes

in the words of bill hicks - those nice, socially acceptable taxable drugs Grin

Enid · 01/03/2006 14:41

would be more gutted if the dds ended up hardened smokers than if i found out they had gone to glastonbury and taken acid

bluejelly · 01/03/2006 14:43

NP does that mean you told your parents about everything you did? I told mine a little bit but still think they would be shocked about the bigger picture, IYSWIM

madmarchhare · 01/03/2006 14:43

Absolutely agree enid.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/03/2006 14:45

No WWB, I was the writer of the post you referred to and I wasn't referring to you or anyone else who had preceded me. I was referring to myself.

I deeply disapprove of all sorts of things most Mners find normal or exciting and I don't care who knows it.

But I am not going to enter an argument or be offensive to anyone here (not intentionally anyway) as I am far too nice to do that. Grin

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 14:45

I will be distraught if either of my children smokes. but I'm hoping fags will be illegal by then.

WigWamBam · 01/03/2006 14:47

Not after an argument at all, DG ... just winced at the thought that there was anyone holier than thou on the thread when I couldn't see anyone!

I daresay they'll be here eventually though Wink

nailpolish · 01/03/2006 14:47

bluejelly, no i didnt tell my parents everything. they havent a clue about things i got up to. that doesnt mean i lied to them

they just never asked

Enid · 01/03/2006 14:48

most of my drug use was after I left home anyway (student years)

nulnulcat · 01/03/2006 14:49

spent the whole of y late teens and 20's partying and taking most drugs on offer never heroin or crack some of my best conversations with my best mate were when we were off our heads on lsd and we still laugh about them now! we still have the odd big weekend coke speed and e these days but dd is with my mum overnight so not my responsibility then. have got pissed when breastfeeding and she slept really well that night!! still go out and get drunk at weekends and she is a very understanding 2 year old when mummy got a hangover! dont smoke around her. have tattoos and piercings so not really the best example to set her when she is older maybe she will be like ab fab saffy and totally disapproving of her dreadful mother!

DumbledoresGirl · 01/03/2006 14:50

Well I feel it in my head WWB, but wouldn't sday it out loud.

I don't mean to be patronising to drug users, but I have quite wide knowledge of what it can do to your body and I can't understand why intelligent people would want to take the risk. You wouldn't cross a motorway with your eyes shut would you?

suzywong · 01/03/2006 14:57

now; cigarettes and alcohol, but will be quitting the cigarettes as of right now

Then: spliff very occasionally if there was one going until I got embarrased at passing out and hitting the deck, acid once, occasional mushrooms and only one line of coke off the lav seat at the Nottinghill Arts club at danniii minogue's birthday party years ago - couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Ecstasy passed me by entirely.

Heroin is very cheap here, will keel-haul the children if they ever go near it.

madmarchhare · 01/03/2006 14:59

Where does your wider knowledge come from DumbledoresGirl?

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 15:03

SW, why quitting fags, you pregnant?

nailpolish · 01/03/2006 15:05

im a nurse and worked in A&E a lot, dumbledoresgirl, saw hundreds of drug users but it never put me off. i would quite easily admit i was stupid to take them myself

Bugsy2 · 01/03/2006 15:12

Just out of interest, because I am feeling slightly irritated by the intelligent people comment, I wonder whether more people die & are injured because of traffic accidents than drug use?
Have no idea what the answer is, but plenty of intelligent people drive cars!
I'm sure that is a very flawed retort but I'm going to go with it anyway. Grin

MrsBigD · 01/03/2006 15:15

I consider myself intelligent... but there were those days where I was young, naive and sometimes stupid Grin

bluejelly · 01/03/2006 15:16

Dumblesdore I've been watching out for long-term damage for ages( haven't taken anything for 7 years now) Can't say I've found any at all-- the same for almost all my other mates.

However a couple of people I know have had psychotic breakdowns, ostensibly triggered by drugs. But difficult to know if they would have had the breakdowns anyway.

It is a risk, but really not like walking on to a motorway with your eyes shut.

IME 90% of people can 'get away with it'. Whether it is worth it is really a personal choice

fastasleep · 01/03/2006 15:32

IMO alcohol and tobacco are just as bad as lower class drugs... a lot more people are injured, made ill, and end up woth psychological problems from alcohol (and fags, not psych probs though lol) than any other drugs... TBH I would probably make alcohol and cigarrettes class C drugs if I had my way.

Everywhere I turn ther eare families that have been ripped apart by alchohol, you just can't say the same about pot.

fastasleep · 01/03/2006 15:33

Hello I promise I have not been smoking in the bike shed in my abscence, no matter how much my typing and general sentence putting togethering has gone down the loo...

tiredemma · 01/03/2006 15:44

dont you think that if alcohol had been discovered for the first time ever recently, then it would be illegal?

have been to lots of clubs where everyone is off their heads on drugs and never, ever seen any trouble.

have been to lots of "RITZY-esq" establishments and seen many young men have their heads kicked in, all through violence caused by drinking.

incidently- saw a cross-section of a lung yesterday of someone who had died from lung cancer. my god- if that is not enough to put me off smoking.

my only problem with drugs concerns those involved in heroin and crack cocaine, absolutly devastate the lives of not only those addicted, but also their families.

podkin · 01/03/2006 15:44

I would hope that being 'intelligent' helped me to be a 'responsible' drug user (although there were times when I could have gone off the rails completely). I read up about potential pitfalls and sort of tried to avoid them. There are a lot of people out there who take drugs mindlessly (both legal and illegal). It does pay to be aware...rave safe !

bluejelly · 01/03/2006 15:50

Indeed Podkin, which kind of suggests that you should tell your kids the truth, the highs and the lows so that they are aware.
Which means when it comes to having the drug chat with my dd it'll prob be a long one Grin
Hopefully my drug tales will bore her to tears and she'll run off and join an orchestra Wink

Elibean · 01/03/2006 15:51

All of them except ecstasy and 'designer drugs' which weren't around in my day. Spent years recovering from it all, too!
