Drugs. Which have you tried?

Everyone's talking about drugs this morning.

These days I'm a regular user of caffeine and alcohol.

I used to be T Total and caffeine-free in the nineties but I did enjoy cannabis regularly and ecstasy and acid less regularly.

I can't imagine taking those these days (with the possible exception of the odd spliff Wink, because I'm too busy with the kids and can't afford to step out of the real world these days.
I also wonder how I'll feel if and when my kids decide to experiment.

How about you?

Um, thats 20 years ago. Now, just the occasional coffee and plenty of weak tea Smile

fastasleep · 01/03/2006 15:53

What is it like 'trying' heroin? Has anyone done that? I'm really curious, I read something once about how you're hooked from the word go and it's horrendous.....

(not that I ever want to take the stuff - bleugh!!)

DumbledoresGirl · 01/03/2006 15:57

I didn't say you weren't intelligent if you took drugs. I very deliberately said the opposite because I know from reading your posts on other subjects that many of you are in fact very intelligent.

I would rather not say where my knowledge of what drugs do to you comes from as it gives something away about me that I don't want people to know. But my knowledge is not exactly something most of you don't know too.

Bugsy2 · 01/03/2006 16:04

My point is that people take risks all the time: intelligent or otherwise!
I don't think anyone has actually said that drugs are really good for you and are risk free. Some people have admitted to enjoying taking drugs and quite alot of us on this thread have tried drugs and been fortunate enough not to be damaged by them.
In all liklihood most people who take drugs will have some idea of the risk involved. In the same way that every time you get in your car you know that there is a statistical liklihood that you will be involved in an accident. It is a risk some people choose to take.

Miaou · 01/03/2006 16:08

Not read all the posts but I must be naive, I never realised so many people experimented with drugs! I didn't realise I was that unusual.

I tried a cigarette twice - once because my brother offered me one, and once because I knew it would send my then boyfriend apoplectic (it did Wink). Didn't even try booze until I was 17. Never tried illegal drugs (or been offered them either).

Dh the same - never even tried smoking, or illegal drugs. He did have a serious alcohol problem when we first met though.

We've not really discussed drugs much but I'm pretty sure dh is zero tolerance on them. WRT alcohol, the dds have had it offered to them from about 7 years old (watered down a great deal, with a meal) - as we want them to see drinking alcohol as nothing special or clever.

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:10

fastasleep, I 'tried' heroin. I smoked it every day for a week solid with a very gorgeous boyfriend called Paddy. We lost all track of time and would spend all day in bed and then tumble out at 2am to go and eat taramaslata and olives in the nearest Greek restaurant. I have photos he took of us that week, it was like being in dreamland. But I knew I had to watch it and so I stopped at the end of the week when the gorgeous Paddy left for Japan, for ever, and never, ever did it again. I thought it was love (him, not the drug) but looking back, it wasn't. Hey, no effects here either but all my drug use is a long time ago and always was pretty occasional in that west London twentysomething partying kind of way anyway. I think the last time I took any ilegal drugs was over 10 years ago.

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:13

And I remember hearing someone interviewed when Trainspotting came out (Danny Boyle maybe? Irvine Walsh? dunno) who said what people don't tell you about drugs is that yes, they DO make you feel good, that's why people take them. But of course we're not supposed to tell our children that :) So there you go dumbledoresgirl, you can be intelligent AND take drugs, that's a fact.

ruty · 01/03/2006 16:14

i'm a bit worried about this. Have dabbled with a few things in my twenties [late starter] and dh has more so, though neither of us have done anything for a good few years. but I am worried about his attitude to drugs with regards to our ds. He thinks ds will do things like cannabis anyway, so he doesn;t see anything wrong with, maybe rolling a spliff with him when he turns 16. I disagree strongly, and think we should take a zero tolerance stand on all drugs, because i've seen cannabis screwing up people's attention spans and concentration, and there are health side effects too. its a very difficult one, on the one hand maybe its hypocritical, and i suppose you have to be loving and supportive if one of your kids dabbles with drugs, but i still think I will try to steer them away from them as much as possible, and hoping dh will feel the same by then.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/03/2006 16:14

I repeat, I didn't say otherwise WWW!

noddyholder · 01/03/2006 16:15

My brother was a heroin addict for years and 5 months after he stopped he had a medical and the doctors said he was one of the healthiest and fittest people they had ever seen and no sign of any damage. But cannabis ruined his life.We are all different and there is a lot of scaremongering around drugs and misinformation.

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:18

OK, so you didn't, apologies! You said you didn't understand why intelligent people would take the risk. Maybe I've answered your question then with my post below? It's a calculated risk and based on the benefit which = pleasure from drugs.

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:20

ruty, I used to think cannabis was harmless, I'm not so convinced now actually. I know someone who has had an episode as a result of it too. Do as I say, not as I did, hey, maybe that's what we'll be saying!

bluejelly · 01/03/2006 16:20

Your brother was lucky not to be damaged by heroin noddyholder. My best friend's ex is a serious heroin and coke addict (Doherty-style). It has truly messed up his body and his life, can't work, can't look after his kids, can't keep a relationship going. Very sad actually

DumbledoresGirl · 01/03/2006 16:21

I guess i am just not a risk taker. Never have been, never will be. And I am a control freak so drugs just would not appeal on either score for me.

However, I take Bugsy's point about taking risks when you get into a car. So I am a risk taker! Hooray!

noddyholder · 01/03/2006 16:22

Physically he is fit as a fiddle Mentally is another issue although he was like that before drugs so can't really blame them

bundle · 01/03/2006 16:22

dh had an amnesic episode (4 days) after taking cocaine. his mum had a bit of a psychotic episode with dope, and it doesn't agree with him either. brain chemistry is a funny thing..

kama are you on the right thread?

NotQuiteCockney · 01/03/2006 16:33

It's funny that we see giving kids bits of alcohol from a pretty early age as normal and acceptable, but giving them drugs, ever, is completely forbidden!

Not saying I'm any different, really, though. Well, particularly not as the one group the cannabis seems notably bad for is teenage boys!

Oh, and re: breakdowns. The only person I've known who had a drug-induced breakdown had it from qat (sp?) which is a North African drug, a bit like caffeine in terms of strength and usage. You never know what will set you off. But I think she would have had the breakdown anyway ...

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:34

Dumbledore, you demon, you! :)

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:34

(re getting in a car = a risk, I meant!)

Big wimp so have changed my name.

Did it all (excpet maybe ketamine)
Excessive drinking, cannabis (in all its forms), acid (loads), e's (loads - 10 in a night on occasion), heroin, speed, heroin & speed together (injected - disgusting!), coke, crack (twice)…

I am to blame but a lot of it was to do with falling love with a heroin addict during my early 20s and then nearly becoming one myself. I overdosed twice I consider myself very lucky to be alive. Said boyfriend since died which resulted in my family finding out all about him and have since admitted part of the truth to my mother.

These days I despise heroin and don't want anything to do with anyone who ever takes it.

I don't do any drugs except for occasional recreational use of coke

bluejelly · 01/03/2006 16:59

Oh yes Kama, sorry the question was a long way down. FWIW I don't think even a spell in a boot camp would have put me off-- also I did most of my experimenting as an adult.
Though maybe I'll change my tune when my dd comes home off her head...
