Can you tell me what you (honestly!) eat in a day?

I'm getting blood tests for weight loss this week - yeah, yeah, I know, poor me, huh? This isn't stealth boasting though - I am concerned and so is GP. However, I do wonder if I am actually eating enough or if I have lost sight of what is 'normal'. Or if I'm just busy and burning it off?

OP posts:
Chandon · 09/01/2012 19:01

I eat about twice what "normal women" eat (my friends), but i am very tall, sporty and not into being thin (BMI 23). Never dieted in my life, but have had same weight for years.

I will have two slices of toast for breakfast with butter, peanut butter, jam, or with a couple of eggs. Juice.

I will have a hot meal for lunch (Thai, or Pasta, or soup with bread, sometimes a big salad in summer)

I will have some fruit in the afternoon.

I eat a big dinner in the evening (meat and two veg or stir fry with noodles, home made curry, stew). About a plate and a half.

Not big on snacking though (no biscuits, crisps only at parties/pub).

I guess we are all different!

Scorps · 09/01/2012 19:02

I have no boobs either Grin

My Mum and both my sisters are the same as me too, I find it very hard to put on weight. Now it's not Xmas and there are no mince pies, I will be 8st, maybe slightly under within a fortnight

Ifancyashandy · 09/01/2012 19:03

I get called skinny at 5'8" / 10 st, size 10-12, with a BMI of 20 (slap bang in the middle of 'healthy' although I know many dispute this as a measure). And I have boobs of 34 DD. I am not skinny. Slim, yes. But not skinny. I get fed up with it too.

bonkersLFDT20 · 09/01/2012 19:03

Today I have had 2 pieces of toast with jam and one clemenine for brekky.

Lunch was jacket with beans and cheese.
Galaxy bar while shopping.

Dinner was 1/2 jacket potato (don't normally have the same for lunch and dinner!), 2 veggie sausages, a little bit of fish and brocolli and frozen mixed veg.

Will have some wine and a bag of choc. buttons later.

I am 5'8. 8st 13. Breastfeeding (a nearly 3 year old, so not much) and I run 2 or 3 times a week (total about 20 miles).

I often skip breakfast but have a banana about 40 mins before a run.

"I am genuinely shocked at how many people's daily diets here include no fruit or veg, and nowhere near the minimum of 5 a day." Really shocked, Amelia? Most people don't eat enough fruit and veg, and we were asked for an honest response. If most people ate enough of it then the govt and media wouldn't be going on about it all the time.

Some days, like yesterday, I must have had about 8 portions of fruit/veg. Today I've probably had 2 so far and might not have more than 1-2 more before the end of the day (not having dinner). My logic is that it all balances out in the end.

Liliana1 · 09/01/2012 19:10

Porridge for breakfast
Bowl of soup for lunch
Just cooking roast beef for tea - heavy on the veg, light on roast potatoes!

I'm bloody starving right now :(

Bonkers, am jealous! That was similar to my diet when I was over 13 stone! And we are the same height. Admittedly I did no exercise.

But just goes to show that different people can eat the same and be all sorts of shapes and sizes.

baubleybobbityhat · 09/01/2012 19:13

I wouldn't describe 18 or even 24 units as "way over" the recommended amount for women, especially as that was revised upwards recently.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 09/01/2012 19:26

Elephants I agree. amelia - OP asked what people eat "in a day" and people, therefore, responded with what they have eaten today. Mine is low in fruit and veg today so far (I ate a pear after reading this thread, so have now had 2 pears and a carrot) but haven't eaten dinner yet which will involve lots of veg so will make my 5 a day. But I have days where I eat less fruit and veg and days where I eat more so a one day sample won't necessarily give a true indication of how much fruit and veg people eat in general?

I always think that another thing which impacts on the amount people eat/can eat without gaining weight is also exercise. I don't do any but I do have a 2 year old who I stay at home with so I am more active than if I were sitting at a desk for eg.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 09/01/2012 19:28

Oh and for eg I don't normally have super noodles for lunch... Blush. Only once every couple of weeks

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 19:30

Snsck - Few squares of posh choc

I am overweight tho not huge. In 12 bottoms and 16 tops and large boobs. Post baby still (11 weeks) and bfing

Is snacking one of the things distinguishing those who'd rather weigh less from those who are content? What I listed is a (perhaps worryingly) invariable repetition of my weekday diet, unchanging from month to month, and I don't eat between meals at all, even if I'm really hungry and wondering if I could have lunch at 11.45. Also, being at work all day, there are limited snacking opportunities - I'd have to go quite a long way and take quite a long time to get anything extra to eat.

RachelHRD · 09/01/2012 20:21

Mine varies. Today has been:

Breakfast - handful of cereal cranberry wheats and glass apple juice as had to get DD to hospital apt - and then an M&S bacon roll at hospital, OJ and a small latte

Lunch - 2 slices toast with marmite & butter, snack size sausage roll, some grapes and a pack of wotsits, oh and the last rather dry donut Blush

Late afternoon after DS rugby - diet pepsi and a choc caramel square Blush

Dinner - sauasge pasta bake and avocado, cucumber and tomato salad

Will prob have some choc this eve at some point Blush - not a normal day for me - remove bacon roll and 2 x sweet treats and I am usually pretty good and don't snack between meals. Need to up my fruit intake and cut back on the odd coffee shop treat.

OP hope you are OK

dairymoo · 09/01/2012 20:24

Breakfast:
Large bowl of fruit n fibre with blueberries & soy milk, small glass of OJ.

Snack:
Coffee, sometimes a cake (if at a playgroup, etc), sometimes a satsuma, sometimes just coffee.

Lunch:
Big bowl of vegetable soup, piece of toast & occasionally some cheese. Piece of fruit. Can of Coke Zero Blush

Mid-afternoon:
Sometimes a cup of tea, piece of fruit, sometimes nothing. Often a couple of bites of DCs tea!

Supper:
Main meal of some description - spag bol, stew, stir fry, etc. Yogurt for pudding.

Water drunk throughout the day.

5'6" 8st3 but still BF a 14mo. A couple of pounds will creep back on when she weans.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 09/01/2012 20:24

Picot - I eat pretty similarly to you (well, mine is probably slightly less healthy notwithstanding the chocolate and cakes) and I snack. I graze - probably eat every 2 hours or even more frequently. And I weigh the same as you and am the same height. Apparently eating little and often is actually very good for you, and for staying slim.

So I think it is more about portion size and activity levels than whether you snack or not (although obv snacking regularly on huge bags of crisp and giant chocolate bars would mean you'd have to do an awful lot of exercise!) Grin

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 09/01/2012 20:25

Oh and metabolism.

rhetorician · 09/01/2012 20:28

today (got up for early flight at 6am so not typical day, perhaps)

porridge with honey (from Pret at airport, so god knows what was actually in it)
fruit pastilles
ham and egg sandwich (horrid)
brazil nuts
2 humbugs
glass red wine
pasta with tomato sauce (garlic and chilli)

probably will have yogurt and dried fruit and/or chocolate before bed

ps I usually eat more than this - am 5'2 and about 9 stone 9 or 10 - but I do run about 30 miles a week, and commute by bike to work

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 20:30

jajas

I think you have to snack! Do you like nuts, hummous, cheese, yoghurt?

coolkat · 09/01/2012 20:35

Crikey this is a wake up as I know I need to stop snacking, today I have had

Mid-morning; WW bar
Lunch; 3 Ryvita's with X-Light Philly, Muller light, cherries and grapes, special k bar
Handful of sweets
Dinner; Pork loin, carrotts, broccili, 4 new pots. 1/2 tin low fat rice pudding
large handful of wine gums, 4 biscuits (140 cal)
Ceral bar
3 cups of tea and lots of hot water.

I know I need to loose the extra cereal bar and the biscuits Blush
5'5 10'2. Would love to be 9'9.

Coronation chicken sandwich

Vegetarian lasagne ready meal, baked potato, beetroot, tomatoes

2 cups tea, 2 cups coffee.

headfairy · 09/01/2012 20:38

coolkat, what kind of biscuits were they? most biscuits are around the 80 cal mark so four would be 320 cals.
