Can you tell me what you (honestly!) eat in a day?

I'm getting blood tests for weight loss this week - yeah, yeah, I know, poor me, huh? This isn't stealth boasting though - I am concerned and so is GP. However, I do wonder if I am actually eating enough or if I have lost sight of what is 'normal'. Or if I'm just busy and burning it off?

OP posts:
LouMacca · 09/01/2012 14:55

Typical day for me would be:

Breakfast - 3 weetabix OR bowl of shreddies OR big bowl of porridge

Lunch - 2 scambled eggs on 2 slices on wholemeal toast OR bowl of Soup and brown roll

Tea - Stir fry OR Fish and Veg OR pasta dish. Don't eat meat.

Couple of cups of tea a day with a couple of biscuits OR rivitas with low fat cheese spread. Sometimes (well quite often actuallyl!) I will treat myself to a cake or choc during the day or a pudding a night.

I'm 5'7 and currently weigh about 9 and a half stone. I usually weigh around 9 stone but haven't been running or walking much over the Christmas break so hopefully once I start that again I'll shift that half a stone.

wahwahwah · 09/01/2012 14:58

Chocolate and tea mainly.

tardisjumper · 09/01/2012 15:05

@Picot it is hugly down to portion sizes

I am on 1200 calorie a day diet at the mo as I am v tiny and want to lose a few more pounds.

Today I will eat - breakfast - hm spinach and cheese muffin
snakc - salted pretzels
lunch - left over hm chicken and tomato stew (1 chicken thigh)
dinner - 2x hm blackbean and butternut squash burritos with rice
treat - single G+T with slim line tonic or half pint beer (as I like my burittos spicy!)!

exercise - shred video and 50 minutes of walking in my commute

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/01/2012 15:33

:o Scarlett - it does feel wrong I agree. I used to always have two slices with soup but then realised I felt a bit overstuffed/lethargic, so am trying to just have one and it seems ok so far.

Picot - I think it's a lot to do with genetic body shape, amount of exercise taken, general metabolism etc.

headfairy · 09/01/2012 15:39

alot of it also Picot is down to how much you eat without even registering. If everyone else is like me, it'll be the quarter of a bagel ds left on his plate that I popped in my mouth without even realising, the odd left over bit of banana dd hands me when she's finished that I eat without even thinking. On their own they're tiny amounts, added all together it probably amounts to 200 cals a day (I'm being a bit overly generous there) in my case. That's what I need to cut down on.

eurochick · 09/01/2012 16:02

A typical day would be:

Museli or porridge for breakfast, with a glass of juice or cordial
Sometimes a cereal bar mid-morning if hungry
Soup/noodles/curry/roll for lunch. I try to go for hot food rather than sandwiches as I find it fills me up for longer
Maybe a yoghurt
Fruit mid afternoon
Occasionally cake or chocolate, if someone has brought it into the office
Evening meal varies of course but is always cooked from scratch by my lovely husband, something like curry with rice, chorizo and lentil soup, vegetable and chicken soup/stew, stir fry, boeuf bourgignon. A couple of nights a week we will get home late and just have cheese and biscuits or a toastie

Bar my juice/cordial with breakfast all my drinks are zero calorie - water, black coffee, green tea, etc.

I'm 5'6 and about 9'10 atm (about 1/4 stone over my ideal due to post-Xmas bloat). My weight stays pretty stable on the above diet.

Popbiscuit · 09/01/2012 16:20

Breakfast: Porridge with nuts-blueberries OR almond butter-banana on top. Make it with almond milk as I avoid dairy.
Lunch: Big Salad with one of the following: Egg white and veg-cheese wrap (sprouted grain tortilla), portion of salmon, wrap with tuna or turkey/avocado or hummus (always with veg stuffed in too). Sometimes have a small cup of homemade veg soup too if I've been running in the morning. Apple and cup of green tea.
Afternoon Snack: Orange / Kiwi / Berries plus a handful of nuts (Brazils are my favourite)
Dinner: Always homemade: Usually a gigantic salad and some sort of veggie curry or bean burritos or pasta or thai curry with tofu and brown rice/quinoa or fish of some sort plus more vegetables. Glass of red wine 4-5 times/week.
Dessert: Always! Usually a few pieces of dark chocolate or cup of dark choc. cocoa with an orange sometimes.

I try to stick to this basic template and my weight stays stable (There's an obese woman inside me who wants to get out). Basically my "rules" are to NOT touch any white breads, pasta, pastries, biscuits or cakes (although I make them a lot for kids etc.). If I'm going to have carbs they have to be extremely, extremely high quality sprouted grains bread etc. or in natural form (ie; brown rice).

Run 30k week and walk dog and kids everywhere.

5'5. 118 lbs.

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 16:27

breakfast- usually 1 or 2 eggs boiled or scrambled with 1 slice gluten free toast or 3 oat cakes.

Lunch- salad with sardines, or tuna, or prawns, or sliced chicken or homemade lentil soup. Apple mid afternoon.

Dinner- most often fish 4x a week with veg , or chicken stir fry, chicken breasts, pasta with roast vegetables, red meat about once every 2 weeks. try to eat sweet potoates rather than white pots as more vitamins etc.

I have various food intolerances so can't do dairy , gluten or some fruits.

I weigh just under 8 st. and am 5ft 3.

MrsHoarder · 09/01/2012 16:33

Breakfast: Big bowl of bran flakes with sultanas or porridge (with golden syrup)
Elevenses: Toast with marmite or crisps
Lunch: Jacket potato/noodles with leftovers or a small can of veg soup and toast. Then fruit.
Afternoon snack: chocolate or a ramakin of nuts
Dinner: Risotto, potatos or pasta with fish/meat
Supper: Cheerios

I'm pregnant though: usually I'm lighter on the snacks than this but I go dizzy if I don't eat for too long atm. Lots of glasses of water with the occasional cup of tea through the day as well. I'm a healthy weight but about 6ft and usually very active.

enjoyingscience · 09/01/2012 16:40

It is amazing how much you learn just by writing down what you eat and how much of it. I had to do it for a fortnight once (helping out a friend with a uni project, not because I'm obsessed!), and found it so interesting! It made me much more aware of my diet. A one day snap-shot is probably not that useful, but try it for a whole week and you will have a good idea as to whether your diet is balanced.

To contribute my (horrific) daily menu...

Most of a marmite and philly bagel
Decaf latte (medium)
6 chocolates (mainly quality street)
Cheddar salad sandwich
creme egg (I know, I know)
Dinner will be spag bol made with quorn and lots of veg, with wholewheat spagetti.
Several gallons of tea throughout day
Will also have some wine as I'm going to book group!

I am attempting to eat less chocolate as the week progresses - going cold turkey after christmas seemed dangerously ill advised. I do yoga and have a fairly active job, so somehow manage to keep to a size 10, (approx 10.5 stone at 5ft 8.)

BarbieDahl · 09/01/2012 16:45

Breakfast : 2 slices toast with butter and jam, cup of tea(no sugar)
Lunch: sandwich, soup, bowl of cereal or leftovers, fruit
4pm : cup of tea with about 3 biscuits or cake
Dinner : Meat or fish with veg and carbs, no dessert

No supper as we usually eat quite late but sometimes pre-dinner snack like crisps or bread and paté

5'5 9st

BalloonSlayer · 09/01/2012 16:55

Breakfast - hot cross bun with butter (lots). 2 mugs of tea, milk no sugar

Mid morning - 2 ryvitas sandwiched with butter and marmite. mug tea no sugar

Lunch - ham and processed cheese sandwich. Box of mini smarties (67 calories and take ages to eat as so bleedin fiddly! My diet tip of the day Grin ) Mug of tea milk no sugar

Got home - tea milk no sugar. May have had a couple of minstrels out of the Christmas stuff but Shock can't remember

Tea - Vegetarian spaghetti bolognaise. Probably with cheese. And bread and butter And it's a wine night, so wine

Am 5'4 and 8st 12 but but but but but I was 8st 10 at the beginning of December, and I am trying not to have things like Spag Bol & bread but DH is cooking tonight so what the hey.

legallyblond · 09/01/2012 16:57

Hmm.

I am (slightly unhealthily perhaps) interested in this thread as I used to have anorexia, but can hand on heart say I am totally recovered (now have a DD!) and have been for about 3 years.

When in "recovery" we would have to eat A LOT more than pretty much every example on here, but that is becasue we were having to gain weight (albeit healthily) and, more importantly, re-learn what it is like to eat "normal" portions and snacks without going for the low fat/diet options or deliberately choosing the "healthier" choice.

Now I do eat less than when recovering, but as someone who has had issues with this in the past, I would NEVER eat what some of you eat - my blood sugar would be too low and I think it would be a step backwards. I also try to never consciously choose the "diet" option unless I genuinely fancy it.

Now, no gaining, no losing, and a bmi of 20.5 I eat:

Brekkie: Two slices toast (plus butter) with scrambled eggs and tomatoes or mushrooms;
Lunch: Soup AND a wrap or sandwich (with mayo and whatever else I fancy!);
All afternoon I munch on nuts and dried fruit at my desk;
Pre-dinner: maybe some olives or a pitta dipped in hummous;
Dinner: More soup with a roll PLUS cheese, or maybe stir fry and noodles, or pasta with any sauce (ie inc cream etc).

I no longer count calories, so have no idea, but I guess I eat 2000 or so, at least.

I would never eat less than 1500 cals in a day....

I know I am coloured by my past, but I am Shock at how little some of you eat!!!

OP - hope its nothing serious. Are you sleeping ok and/or do you have sweaty palms? I used to have hyper-thyroidism and became almost skeletal (and then developed an eating disorder trying to stay that way, but I am a weirdo!) Hyper thyroidism (as opposed to hypo thyroidism) is often missed, but is very treatable.

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 17:09

enjoyingscience thiese types of comments baffle me

I do yoga and have a fairly active job, so somehow manage to keep to a size 10, (approx 10.5 stone at 5ft 8.)

How are you a size 10? I am a size 10 ( waist 28, bust 32C) and weigh 3 stones less and am 5 inches shorter. I walk 3 miles 4-5 times aweek, uphill.

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 17:12

Ballonslayer I am shocked at how much fat you are eating. Butter, butter, ham cheese, butter , chocs.

Cholesterol levels?

MadameCastafiore · 09/01/2012 17:14

Too much!

2 weetabix for bvreakfast
A sandwich, packet of Quavers, Banana and 2 Satsumas for lunch
Roast Chicken, roast postatoes and veg
A choclate muffin

Mind you I did shred at 5am this morning and will be going running with DD in a short while!

sandycloud · 09/01/2012 17:18

I lost a stone in a month a couple of years ago and was not trying to lose weight although I definitely needed to at the time. I was slightly worried but felt ok, just a bit queasy sometimes, did think could be pregnant but wasn't. anyway after blood tests I had an infection in my bowel, apparently it can take months to get over a bug, so had more tests and it was gone. Soon put all the weight back on though....hope your tests go ok.

ceebeegeebies · 09/01/2012 17:19

Amelia I think the answer is in your question tbh - because Enjoyingscience is 5 inches taller than you, she is clearly going to weigh more but still be the same size. I am 5ft 9 and, if I weighed 10st 5, I would easily be a size 10 - unfortunately I weigh 13st 11 and am a size 16 Sad however, clearly if you were to weigh 13st 11, you would be quite a few sizes higher than a 16 - does that make sense? Us taller people have more room to spread the room around Wink

I do eat too much - snacking is a real problem of mine which I cannot conquer Sad

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 09/01/2012 17:21

Yes, I agree. I'm 5 foot 10 and about 9 stone, but have been up to 10 and on occasion 10 and a half stone but, owing to being tall, don't look that different.

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/01/2012 17:22

Tuna mayo roll with side salad

Chocolate, left over Thontons from Christmas

One can fat coke

Spag Bog for supper

2 cups of naice coffee

Robotindisguise · 09/01/2012 17:26

I am 5'11 and a dress size 12 (11.5 stone)

Today I ate:
A bowl of muesli with skimmed milk and tea
A bag of hula hoops
A cheese and ham baguette with a chocolate brownie
Two more cups of tea (other drinks water)
Tonight - haven't decided but a main meal

The brownie isn't usual - the rest is pretty typical. Although I can resist the call of the snack machine (hula hoops) if I bring in a tub of raisins and peanuts, but forgot them today.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 09/01/2012 17:31

I always find this kind of thing quite interesting - just to see what other people eat. I should definitely eat more healthily.

Today I ate:

Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs and some pear, cup of tea with full fat milk, some of my daughter's toast.

Snack: Not today but sometimes something like cake/biscuits

Lunch: Super noodles and some carrot

Mid-afternoon: a slice of banana cake and another cup of tea

Just now: some leftovers from my 2 year old's dinner

When she goes to bed I will eat crisps. I do this every night.

When my husband gets home (usually 8:30/9): Left over roast beef, potatoes, vegetables etc. Fruit and probably some chocolate or possibly another slice of cake and a glass of milk.

Throughout the day I usually pick at sweets too. Which is a bad habit - I get low blood sugar so refined carbs aren't great for me as they can make me have a crash where I get shaky, faint, heart beating, sweaty etc. So are sweets. Yet I still eat them lots. I need to eat regularly or I get the above symptoms. I usually eat every couple of hours. But not massive amounts as I don't have an enormous appetite.

I am 5ft 6 and weight 8.5 stone.

Quattrocento · 09/01/2012 17:37

Breakfast - one fruit smoothie, three cups of coffee with milk

Lunch - forgot to have any

Dinner will be chilli, rice, sour cream and guacamole

ameliagrey · 09/01/2012 17:54

snowmaiden- I think you have answered your own question!

your snacks of cake, biscuits, crisps and whatever else are adding up to one very high in cals meal themselves.

I am lucky or not in that I can't tolerate much wheat or dairy so we never have cakes or biccies in the house, or crsips, or sweets. (except at Xmas.)

My DCs are adults now but we had the same "rules" when they were around. I'd make a fruit crumble or something at weekends but no other puddings except as a once week treat.

TeaOneSugar · 09/01/2012 17:56

I follow slimming world so I eat loads, typically;

Breakfast: Two slices of brown bread from a small loaf toasted with two eggs & mushrooms cooked in low fat spray or beans on toast.

Snack: Fat Free Yogurt and/or fruit.

Lunch: Jacket Potato & Beans or a wholemeal bread sandwich with egg & light mayo.

Dinner: Veggie bolognese bake with fat free yogurt and egg topping (tastes nicer than it sounds) or a Quorn burger/grill with vegetables and a mashed potato.

Snack: A bowl of cereal or cereal bar

Lots of tea with skimmed milk or black coffee. All large portions except for cereal, milk and cheese which are measured.

I'm 5' 4.5" a dress size 12, and weigh 11st 6lb - hence the slimming world.
