I found MN the same day as I gave up can you believe? National No Smoking day-08.03.05-replaced one addiction with another!!

charliecat · 16/09/2005 18:03

still cant work out wednesday, am I thick?

mummylonglegs · 16/09/2005 22:40

lucy, I don't think it matters to be honest what day you give up. I think it DOES matter though to set a definite date in your mind. I decided to quit just after my birthday. I knew it was pointless doing it before as I didn't want to spend my birthday craving fags. I agree with everyone here about reading the Allan Carr first, even if you don't use his method (i.e. you chose to use lozenges) it's a very very good book to change your way of thinking about smoking.

In answer to your question, I smoked up to 30 a day up until I got pregnant with dd (January 02) then I smoked about 2-3 a day when pregnant and it was only after she was born that the amount I smoked started to creep up and up. I never went back to the pre-pregnancy amount of fags but it was knocking on 10-a-day at the moment I decided to quit.

It's bloody hart to quit. The first couple of days can be especially tough. After day 3 I found the cravings got easier and less frequent. By the second week I was having long periods when I didn't think about smoking at all.

I quit in mid-May but I haven't been brilliant. I had one slip-up about a month or so in. And another one just lately when I was under lots of stress. But they're slip-ups. In my mind now I'm a non-smoker. Thank goodness.

I ALWAYS tried to think about the horrible illnesses I was saving myself from when I was first quitting. What's a week of craving in comparison to months of dire chemotherapy for instance? When you don't have a choice any more ...

lucy5 · 16/09/2005 22:44

Thanks ml i'm absolutely dreading it but I know its something I have to do. Im thinking of giving up on Monday, im just worried about it!

mummylonglegs · 16/09/2005 22:52

lucy, it's hard. But it's the best thing you'll ever do for yourself and for your family. You only have one life on this earth (unless you believe in reincarnation!) - why waste it?

dropinthe · 17/09/2005 07:36

Why don't you wait until Ive sent you the book-you will got lots of inspiration from it and will give you more ammo to succeed?

charliecat · 17/09/2005 08:52

Yep think you should wait for the book Lucy, its great

Cc and drop, how the hell do you manage to post so early in the morning?

lucy I agree with those guys, read Allan Carr first, you'll find parts that really affect you that you can return to in moments of weakness. Better than relying on lozenges in my opinion.

charliecat · 17/09/2005 14:38

I switch on first thing and sup coffee till the kids whinge that its breakfast time

evansmummy · 17/09/2005 16:12

Hello all!!

Well, I did it. Smoked a pack of 10 last night during dh's birthday. We did share the packet though.

Feel quite philosophical about it. Don't particularly want to smoke today, cos it was quite foul, tbh. Surprised about how easy it was though.

So it was just one night of silliness, and I am still a non-smoker. Just one that smokes from time to time...

Welcome to lucy!! Allen Carr is a clever man indeed. Although it hadn't been the miracle I'd hoped it would be, it has helped me to see smoking a different light, and to consider it as an addiction and a confidence trick. Go for it and good luck!!!!

lucy5 · 17/09/2005 19:23

Thanks all, will wait for book, I told dh I was giving up and he said he will too. Then I told my mum and she said she wanted to as well!

You howling yet,cc! Don't you mean a werecat?

Wasn't around yesterday because of manic day and a leak in our cupboard outside which means everything we've been storing there has gone rotten. YAK. Bah!

Drop's off for her SE London meet-up today in Woolwich. Tell us later how it went drop me old mate?

Hi girls
just wanted to drop in & report than am still fag free and dh is 8 days off the fags and managing fine! It's is SO SO much easier with him not smoking and making foul stink in utility room where I had to dive through, almost puking, the get to the shower first thing in the moning...

am really delighted to have a happy & healthier dh!

mummylonglegs · 19/09/2005 13:37

Woo hoo to your dh, fg! That's brilliant. Is he pleased with himself? Is this a first for him? And fabbo for you too

Yes, cc, it's a pain. We moved lots of photos and big books and a lot of my old PhD stuff out to make our spare room into dd's bedroom. So it's mostly my stuff. I dread to go through it and see what a mess it might be ...

dropinthe · 19/09/2005 16:05

FG-some renewed snogging sessions on the cards then??.Fair play to him!
MLL-sorry about said cupboard! How are you and dp getting on now-any better? How's he getting on with his paper-any nearer completion?
I really enjoyed the meet up today-Coldtea looked SO familiar-I know I have seen her before somewhere-Kbear made the most delicious choccie nut brownies and the kids had a great time-Great place to meet, actually, as not to big that you have to keep running around.
Boys have cream crackered themselves out giving me some mnet time!
