Any idea what Haunted Victorian Pencil’s seat is predicted to do?

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2024 23:27

Just a point about the new constituency boundaries.

These changes heavily favoured the Conservatives over Labour because of the demographics. But given the swing from the Conservatives to Reform, it's actually in practice potentially benefitting Reform because of that shared demography.

Having grown up in Lincolnshire (where a lot of Reform morons are targeting) the areas are really deprived and poorly educated. There is high immigration mainly due to farming - but the locals hate foreigners despite the fact they were not willing to fill those roles themselves. I've faced A LOT of racism as a non-British person living there.

Stellarcasted · 04/07/2024 23:27

PrincessTeaSet · 04/07/2024 23:19

Why would immigrants want to go to these deprived areas though? Aren't immigrants mainly in big cities? Is it fear of the unknown? I mean I am not familiar with all the places but take pontypridd - not exactly overrun with migrants?

When they arrive in small boats, they're put wherever they're put. And they're not put in cosy middle class villages in the cotswolds or wealthy areas of London!

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:28

The story of the night is Reform not votes for Labour.

This is going to be the analysis of the night I feel, Tories losing all that 2019 gain to Reform, which split the vote and handed Labour the win. Its a hollow victory for Labour but if youre a Labour fan who cares, a big win is a big win. Keir owes Farage a good few pints!

Sometimes they don’t have a choice - thinking of the area I was born in, lots of families were relocated from London by councils into this area for housing.

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:24

No, its a swing from Tory to Reform. Labour votes pretty much the same.

From BBC news?

I understand people wanting the Tories out, but my god, if you think life under a labour government is going to be any better…. wake up!

I’ve been debating about whether to move to Australia / NZ for a couple of years now. I think now I’ve made my mind up. I am getting out of this country!

Bye then!

From BBC news?

How can they claim that when Labour have won more votes than last time on a lower turn out?

The Tories have won significantly fewer.

Bad analysis.

bergamotorange · 04/07/2024 23:30

Aladdinzane · 04/07/2024 23:25

No, Labour won more votes this time round, the Tories lost more and Reform won significantly more that the Tories. The change in votes is Tories to Reform.

Yes: Lab +6%, Ref +13%, Con -19%.
Swing from Con to Lab & Ref.

I’ve posted the BBC swing graph up thread. The “swing” is to do with the position of the party that held the seat in the last time, not the other parties. That’s how the swing graphs work.

I guess the Tories are learning that you reap what you sow!

EmeraldRoulette · 04/07/2024 23:30

@ginandtonic1122 aren't things awful in a similar way there? And the US? ( I don't comment on other countries outside those as I've not paid so much attention)

There's a difference between immigrants and asylum seekers.

Too close to call - 53% Lab, 47% Con

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:31

YaWeeFurryBastard · 04/07/2024 23:28

From BBC news?

3.4% is nowt. It was more like a 70% swing for Tory to Reform

”I’m not racist, but let me just weaponise a black man for my argument”

You are the one who brought Lammys colour into this. I was simply using his name as the highest profile Labour MP who is firmly on the side of transwomen.
Stop flinging the race card round - it’s really quite pathetic but so predictable.

Then it's not accurate.

Labour won more votes on a smaller turn out, the tories lost it.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 04/07/2024 23:32

Where I am has been a Tory stronghold for decades, looks like a LD swing tonight! Can't say I'm surprised as most people I spoke to were either not voting or spoiling their votes. That said if there had been a reform candidate I think the result may have been different?

cardibach · 04/07/2024 23:32

Charlie2121 · 04/07/2024 23:11

Not sure of voter turnout % but of those who did vote the split, if the exit poll is correct, is:

Labour 36%
Conservative 25%
Reform 17%
Lib Dem 9%
Greens 6%
others combined 7%

Labour has lost previous elections with a higher % share of the vote than that.

If a right of centre coalition is formed then Labour will only last 1 term.

Yes, but more of those who voted at all voted for Labour than for any other single party.

It also doesn't take into account the full quote of what he said.

They take the soundbite and weaponise it.

RedToothBrush
