All votes expected by 7am. But sometimes need recounts etc. which there may be many this time around

Aren't there usually some remote constituencies which take a day or two, e.g. where they'e got to row the voting boxes across from some of the smaller islands?

FundingitallHow · 04/07/2024 23:16

Wow 11 thousand to reform in Sunderland and 18 thou Labour!

The whole tory UKIP vote combined there for reform

Itisjustmyopinion · 04/07/2024 23:17

Having a great night so far

Absolutely ecstatic about the decimation of the SNP

Glad that the Tories are out. And even though I didn’t vote for them I am glad that the LD have done well

Reform is worrying but unsurprising when you hear some of the backwards thinking that certain groups have

And watching Alistair Campbell winding Nadine Dorries up is making sticking with channel 4 worth while. His dig about the certain Tory peer that we are not allowed to talk about was great

Couldn’t agree more with every sentence of this post ^^

It’s great isn’t it!

piscofrisco · 04/07/2024 23:19

Devastated I have to go to bed as I must be in work by 7. I just want to watch the results come in...

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:14

Theres no doubt Reform has done the real damage here in terms of stiffing the Tories, splitting the right vote so it loses overall to Labour.

Sunderland will be staying Labour.

Not sure Reform can be fully thanked for this - even if you add the voting % intentions up between Con and Ref it's still been consistently lower than % of people intending to vote Labour.

PrincessTeaSet · 04/07/2024 23:19

MintTwirl · 04/07/2024 23:19

Reform getting a good chunk of votes is no surprise to me, I posted on another thread about it a couple of weeks ago. I live in a former mill town that has been decimated and people are absolutely fed up. I wouldn’t vote reform but I can understand why people want change.

What would be the solution in your town do you think? Investment to create employment?

Hedgeoffressian · 04/07/2024 23:20

12 thousand for Reform in Sunderland. If it wasn’t for Reform it could have been a different result altogether. And also, how many people who voted Reform would admit to it at an exit poll?

Aladdinzane · 04/07/2024 23:20

Jutemat · 04/07/2024 23:18

The Sunderland stats show how close it is. Sunderland South is ALWAYS Labour but if you add Reform and Tory votes, it's almost on a par with Labour. In other constituencies where its less of a labour stronghold, the combined tory and reform vote will eclipse Labours, however it matters not in terms of seats. Still a huge Labour win.

Sunderland South has been very close to the Tories and UKIP recently

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2024 23:20

Turnout in Sunderland South in 2019 was 56%
Turnover this year is 51%

2019
Labour Bridget Phillipson 16,210 40.7%
Conservative Christopher Howarth 13,095 32.9%
Brexit Party Kevin Yuill 6,165 15.5%
Liberal Democrats Paul Edgeworth 2,319 5.8%
Green Richard Bradley 1,125 2.8%
UKIP Richard Elvin 897 2.3%

2024
Green Richard Bradley 1723
Conservative Chris Burnicle 5514
Liberal Democrats Paul Edgeworth 2290
Labour Bridget Phillipson 18837
Reform UK Sam Woods-Brass 11668
(Not got the percentages up yet)

The story of the night is Reform not votes for Labour.

Any Labour supporter celebrating tonight needs to take a long hard look over their shoulder.

It's not a swing it's a Labour hold.

No, it’s a swing from labour to reform, you can still have a swing in a held seat, a swing just means the share of the vote has moved vs last time.

Alicewinn · 04/07/2024 23:20

@PrincessTeaSet its modern slavery- they get a visa and in return get to work in a broken system with shit pay and awful working conditions.

That’s not the expected result.

Based on the exit poll Labour has 36%, Conservatives 25% and Reform 17%

FundingitallHow · 04/07/2024 23:16

Basically a swap of the Con/Reform (Brexit Party) vote from 2019.

Labour won more votes this year than in 2019 though, the swing is from the Tories to Reform.

Exactly. FPTP can obscure the underlying picture if you just look at who won the seat.

Seats matter, but so does the broader picture.

ginandtonic1122 · 04/07/2024 23:23

I understand people wanting the Tories out, but my god, if you think life under a labour government is going to be any better…. wake up!

I’ve been debating about whether to move to Australia / NZ for a couple of years now. I think now I’ve made my mind up. I am getting out of this country!

No, its a swing from Tory to Reform. Labour votes pretty much the same.

No, Labour won more votes this time round, the Tories lost more and Reform won significantly more that the Tories. The change in votes is Tories to Reform.

This reminds me of Brexit. My partner at the time was from a mining town in Wales and I couldn’t understand why they voted for Leave when the area benefited so much from EU grants

He said the same as you. People have seen so much be decimated that they voted for change as they felt that voting Remain would mean more of the same. His family really believed what they were fed and were expecting great things.

Exactly. The Reform vote in Sunderland has taken votes from the Tories and not from Labour.
