Probably a stupid question, but if the Conservatives are the second biggest party but by not very much, are they still the official opposition or does it have to be joint with the lib dems? E.g. currently 87 and 51.

Yes! That means no blue in Wales.

Waiting for our constituency to be declared.

CaveMum · 05/07/2024 05:49

Morning all, just posting before the thread fills up. My constituency has gone Lib Dem with a majority of less than 500.

Glad to see JRM gone and hoping the same for Liz Truss!

Just woken up and am utterly delighted at this result, that Rees-Mogg has gone, and delighted with the result overall, well played Keir and team! It's a great result! And a landslide! Let's celebrate it!

The low turn out and the rise of misogynistic Incel supporting Reform and Nigel Farage is a disaster. I hope they will show themselves up when it comes to actual parliamentary graft. I think it's reached a new low if Farage is mentioning Andrew Tate in his acceptance speech.

What is going on with Jess Philipps in Birmingham is very worrying and the intimidation that went on during the campaign too.

Delighted I will get to see Liz Truss trounced!

OhshutupBeryl · 05/07/2024 06:12

Urgh sorry to see my home town of Sutton Coldfield has held onto their Tory leader Andrew Mitchell, this speaks volumes about some of the type of people that live there, glad I moved away. My Shropshire town is now red instead of blue this morning which I had high hopes for judging by the number of Labour posters around.......Was very shocked yesterday to hear some of my NHS colleagues had voted Tory especially with the recent channel 4 programme being filmed at our hospital. My mind boggles.

CurlewKate · 05/07/2024 07:02

Callum McDonald on Times Radio has just said "This is a funny old landslide"

He's right-it is.

medianewbie · 05/07/2024 07:18

My constituency has declared: Tory.
Gutted (esp as ds is in hospital very ill yet still voted via emergency proxy).
Our MP is the very definition of chocolate teapot. Next time...

I am always saddened that turnout is so low at elections. Is there anything that can be done to encourage it?

UtilitarianNameChange · 05/07/2024 07:29

Hope your DS feels better soon, medianewbie

Great absolutely fantastic result PM Keir Starmer 🤩

and so happy LibDems have won a substantial number of seats I want a strong centre party

Very disappointed about Reform but thankfully not won as many seats predicted (but have won the votes which is concerning but that’s to worry about on another day)

let’s celebrate 🥳

Hull West is held by Labour. Phew.

By a solid lead too. Very thankful. Just shows how rubbish that Sky result predictor tool was in some constituencies.

Charlie2121 · 05/07/2024 08:44

Labour vote down to 33%. That’s the lowest winning percentage share for over 100 years.

An unpopular landslide due to FPTP rules. Labour polled more votes when they lost in 2017.

Starmer will do well to last 12 months as leader and the party will struggle to win in 2029.

FPTP really does create some peculiar scenarios.

I was trying to explain bits and pieces of the results to my DD (12.5, year 7) which is often a challenge (she’s good at asking some quite cutting questions) and I must’ve sounded proper batshit!

”it’s a momentous landslide win for Labour but they actually got fewer votes than they did when they lost, and the LibDems came third but Reform were more popular than them”

Most people are over on the Part 2 thread now

BooBooDoodle · 05/07/2024 19:36

Well I voted reform. When you have boat folk from the local hotel sitting in hedges in your local park whistling at your children, taking pictures of them and harassing mums verbally with sexual taunts whilst with their children then you don’t have a choice really. They are always outside the local takeaway in town trying to grab women and call us whores. I don’t go into town anymore or feel safe. I don’t allow my kids to go to town or the local park. No other party seems to think we have any issues. My son and his friends have unfortunately had the misfortune of meeting these animals and our police don’t give a shit until locals threaten to start vigilante groups. Also just yesterday, a school girl was followed by one of them and he had handcuffs. He tried to grab her. He was arrested then released and was out later trying cars.
It is also a huge smack in the chops when your family gets binned by your dentist because they didn’t have NHS space and these people are there when your paying out privately for your child’s treatment in the waiting room. These are single young men with no morals, they don’t integrate, leach of the system and see women and kids as second class citizens. I am absolutely fed up of this as are a majority of the town.

13 seats for reform is so disappointing - as in I can't believe so many people voted for them!

Edited

I can't believe people voted 'flip flop' Starmer. You can knock Farage all you want, but at least he says what he means. Starmer won't even tell you the true definition of a woman

shehasglasses48 · 05/07/2024 21:07

Just worried about Reform. We’ve turned Labour thank god but reform wasn’t far behind. Hate the thought that most of my neighbours think Farage is the way forward.

But not worried about the one issue Palestine vote?
