My students voted overwhelmingly for Reform

When we had the Brexit vote they also voted for Brexit- large academy 9-18- Southern England

If anything I would say the school promoted Labour

So that is our poll prediction, although certainly not what I hope for.

It's happening in other European countries too...apparently the AfD were second to the CDU among the 16-24 year old in the recent European elections.

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/07/2024 22:26

Maybe it was because the school promoted labour that they did it as a FU to the staff, showing they are capable of making up their own minds and pissing you off at the same time.

Or more likely they are repeating their parents views.

cupcaske123 · 03/07/2024 22:28

What attracted them to Reform OP? Any part of the manifesto?

user876 · 03/07/2024 22:29

they just do it to be controversial.

DCs school voted in the lib dems closely followed by reform (then conservatives then labour last). It's a very mixed ethnicity school in the middle of a large city.

Zonder · 03/07/2024 22:30

The school should have been impartial.

Champagnesocialismo · 03/07/2024 22:32

Ah well. At least they made their own decision! Next time around they will be voting from 16.

History is full sbsolutist youngsters. Doesn’t end well for us older folk

Or maybe they are taking the piss. At our local school they made videos, apparently the one for Reform was hilarious - because it took the piss out of reform.

tinydynamine · 03/07/2024 22:33

I don't live in the UK and won't be voting but I heard that Reform would bring in a Euopean (French/German) style health insurance scheme. That would get my vote. The other parties are too feart to change the NHS.

Regulus · 03/07/2024 22:34

It didn't piss anyone off, and whilst not what I personally wish I don't have an issue with them voting. In fact I was pleased that so many engaged.

I posted more because you can't share predictions after the event, our school predicts a swing to Reform. Doesn't mean it will happen

Our mock election had mostly Tory (which matches the area and demographic of the school), with some Labour but a couple of forms unexpectedly voted Green.

I agree they do it to be controversial.

FWIW I've been a teacher for many years, teaching at mostly quite selective schools so the students are often well informed and can follow political arguments. The thought of giving 16yos the vote still fills me with horror. They are so, so young. No nuance, no real empathy. I think it's an utterly disastrous idea and if anything I'd be a fan of raising the voting age rather than lowering it

Yep.

Honestly, the amount of times my kids came out with random anti Tori pro Labour shit when they were little is mad, I used to be fuming.

Not because I disagreed necessarily, but it’s not a schools/teachers place to be telling reception aged kids who to vote for (knowing they can’t vote!?!) 🙈

Stick to the curriculum

Yes. It is not a coincidence that extreme political movements encourage and manipulate young people. The lack of empathy development goes a long way in getting something done.

I feel that TikTok may have a part to play. One of my teens announced they’d vote reform, and gave me a million reason why. Certainly not a child who has shown any interest in politics previously, (or tbh, currently) but one who watches more tiktok than I’d like. It nearly caused a riot over the dinner table this evening between the siblings , as the others (older) were incredulous at the suggestion .

Kendodd · 03/07/2024 22:42

I wonder how much Andrew Tate is influencing this?

CoffeeInTheClouds · 03/07/2024 22:43

Interesting, my 12 year old told me similar.

They were considering all the main party policies in class, and apparently the whole class cheered when they heard Reform propose to ban gender ideology in schools. It is an all boys school in a strong labour seat by the way.

Spot on. Reckon a similar media strategy

Thank god you don’t live here.

I would not vote Reform, but I would vote for a party bold enough to reform the NHS.

Cabbageandcoconut · 03/07/2024 22:49

I would also give my vote to a party that would bring a French / German health insurance scheme to the UK, but can’t vote reform. It’s very different from the American system people are so terrified of.

TeenLifeMum · 03/07/2024 22:49

The younger people in my work place 20-35 all seem to be voting reform. I was stunned.

Yes, this is possible. I remember a couple of teachers who promoted left-wing views. They really got on my nerves. I also remember an unbearable lecturer at university who was very left-wing. He was supposed to teach psychology but would often steer the seminars round to politics.

It really surprises me to hear this though. The left have far more influence. They pretty much dominate education, the arts, the publishing industry and the entertainment industry. And after tomorrow they’ll run the government as well. I guess the young are more independent-minded than we give them credit for. Obviously they can think for themselves. I realise that’s difficult for those on the left to understand, but it’s true. Some people really do think for themselves. They don’t just mindlessly regurgitate liberal-left views on every issue and then wait for the applause.

EasternStandard · 03/07/2024 22:52

I didn’t realise this was a thing. That schools did a mock vote

Maybe Labour changing voting age to 16 will help Reform more than they expect
