General election 2024

What are you most looking forward to if Labour win?

Presuming theyre going to win the election, what manifesto promises are you hopeful about?

For me it's going to be their promise to fast track rape trials, providing proper support to rape victims and targeted support within the police for victims of domestic violence.

Let's hope they make it happen.

Just the long slow slog of fixing the damage of the last 14 years.

That’s your paranoia isn’t it? I don’t think there is any evidence that Labour are going for peoples homes. They might be interested in people who have more than one.

I pointed out the manifesto Labour has written rules the majority of income based taxes. For ordinary working people that is a good guarantee.

You are clearly worried about your assets, but don’t pretend to be sympathetic to working people. You are not

Let's look to Wales which as Kier says is the blueprint for the country...God help us.

They have reevaluated council tax bands thags hoe will go after our assets. Got a garden, an extension, pay more. Not to.mrnrion they can introduce cgt on the sale of your main residence thats another way.

Then their is the vague definition of a working person someone who can't sign a cheque of they get into trouble ergo anyone with savings is deemed to have too much. I an single no children (my choice) mu modest income allows me to save, saving for my old age cos there is no kids who might care for me but duck me how dare I save money it's deemed as having too much by labour, redistribution of wealth and here they make it clear if u have anything more than that definition they will come for it

Oil and gas profiteers getting the shit taxed out of them

SlothOnARope · 03/07/2024 13:39

The dull comment has nailed it.

I hope Westminster is so boringly efficient and unworthy of comment that mn removes its politics section due to lack of use.

Me too. We’re thinking of emigrating.

It won’t be worth working. You’ll be better off on benefits.

Don’t let any sense of self determination bother you! What kind of life do you expect to have or benefits are a better choice?

Or is it the standard Labour are coming hyperbole?

No drama Starmer - sounds great

People coming to the realisation that it's the same shit on a different shovel and that Labour weren't some miracle cure after all, but just as bad (if not worse) than the incumbents.

nailed it.

verdantverdure · 03/07/2024 13:48

@LumiB

So who do you predict getting all the seats Labour lose in Wales then?

Because the Welsh won't vote Labour if living in a country a Labour government is dreadful, will they?

Yeah I know Hattie! But everyone keeps telling me they will sort it.

Everyone told you brexit would fix it too

He'll be able to give up drug dealing won't he?

So that's nice.

Are labour voters actually delusional? 😂

Hedgeoffressian · 03/07/2024 13:59

I’m not sure really because they haven’t really been very open about what the changes they are going to make once they are in power. The only reason they will get voted in is because a lot of people don’t want the conservatives to get in again. As a working family I guess I’m expected to be a lot worse off and my plans to finally take my family on a holiday abroad will go out the window because I won’t be able to afford to once they finally admit that yes they will be putting everyone’s taxes up.

do you genuinely believe that a massive 5 bed detached house should have the same council tax as a 2 bed terrace? if so, you're either dense or willfully ignorant of life.

and yes, savings are a luxury nowadays even among workers. The average right now is £1.1k in savings... let that sink in. That wouldn't even cover the rent on my tiny house for one month if i lost my job.

I work in a 'high earner' role and happily will pay more tax because it's pennies compared to what i have to spend on private dentistry alone. I also believe in others not being shafted which seems to be a foreign concept to you. So even without that, i'd happily pay a little extra knowing that public services are better funded and better run. That children aren't relying on food banks to survive. The disabled or elderly having to choose between heating their house or food in the winter.

Do we want to discourage this kind of entrepreneurship under a Labour government?

I would have thought all good Tory values. Running own business, receiving state subsidy, mirroring the sexually incontinent Boris Johnson with multiple children.

It is just the kind of feckless chancer that the Conservatives have been able to grow and develop over 14 years of careful government. Don’t wreck it by giving Labour a supermajority.

Vote Conservative; we promise growth, in good banks, pot holes, pharmaceutical enterprises and holes in children’s teeth

You do realise this Henry the Viii of the underclass has carved out his life of work shy debauchery with his 6 women on the Tory watch? Hopefully with some investment in better education, an improved standard of living and some aspirations, his children may be spared from following in his footsteps.

CherryBombe · 03/07/2024 14:15

The police might get some funding and be able to catch your cunty drug dealing neighbour and put him in prison. That would be nice.

Henry the eighth of the underclass 😂😂😂 that's a good one. But I don't think there's any level of investment (you mean my taxes right) thats gonna stop him teaching his kids his wannabe gangster bs.
You have to see it to believe it

I’m in Wales and I cannot get an nhs dentist for my three children, let alone for my husband and I. We already have a Labour gov in this country, why do you think you’ll be better off dentist-wise under Starmer? You will not.

Katypp · 03/07/2024 14:32

I look forward to having a government which is not incompetent, cruel and completely lacking integrity. I look forward to no longer feeling we are an international joke. I look forward to seeing an end to the constant polarising divisive rhetoric stirring up hatred in order to divert attention from the government’s own failings.
Oh and I especially look forward to seeing these awful individuals who have wrecked our country for their own gain finally get their marching orders.

Quite high expectations there, I would say.
Out of interest, why do you think Labour will be any different? Genuine question - I am curious why people seem to think that all Labour politicians are paragons of virtue when they are completely untested in Government.
I also find the narrative that Tories are all just in it to make people poorer and help their friends tiresome and childish.

Who funds Labour in Wales by chance?
Could it be similar to how Tory Governments deliberately underfund labour run councils to make the local people want to vote away from them?

Why do you think Tories wouldn't get worse? They've proven for 14 years they don't care about it so expecting them to change their mind is misguided.

Oil and gas profiteers getting the shit taxed out of them

But they are already, that ship has sailed in2022! They are all pulling out now.

net revenues across all oil and gas taxes fell to £0.9 billion in financial year 2019 to 2020 and to £0.3 billion in 2020 to 2021. In 2021 to 2022, net revenues increased to £1.4 billion and in 2022 to 2023, they increased by a further £7.6 billion to £9 billion.

Hunt increased the tax in November 2022 from its initial 25% rate to 35%, bringing the overall tax burden on North Sea oil and gas producers to 75%, among the highest in the world. He also extended the tax until 2028 rather than 2025.6 Mar 2024.

US energy giant Chevron has become the latest oil and gas company to pull out of North Sea operations following UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's rejection of pleas to pause the "windfall" tax on energy companies. The move comes after some 55 years of Chevron working in the area.17 May 2024

This is the narrative that comes up in Conservative focus groups. If you wonder why it happens, you might ask yourself whether you have paid enough attention

No-one i know believes that every Labour politician is a paragon of virtue, Across all parties there are kind and empathetic people as well as selfish and self serving people with questionable morals.

I just have faith in the Labour party that the latter for them is outnumbered by the first,

Their manifesto covers a range of issues facing the country today that won't just benefit the Upper middle class and the 1%. I have seen and met some very respectable and empathetic Tories over the years who did want to make things better for all. Just a shame they are outnumbered so badly.

Doing away with leasehold.

While the freehold of my flat is owned by the residents and my dh is a director of the residents management company, it would make my flat more attractive to buyers. I want to buy a flat for my next property too and now am fairly limited as I can only look at share of freehold flats.

Also hope more business confidence so the economy can recover. Also hope they are truly funding childcare like they promised.

Hopefully they can do something about nhs too but that seems like a big project
