Is it appropriate for parties to ban ex members for standing for election for other parties? Is that how democracy functions?

If Peter Bone wants to stand for a different party should he be able to?

Clavinova · 28/06/2024 11:05

Keith Vaz could be re-elected as an MP because Labour is failing to highlight that he was disgraced in office amid drug and sex allegations, the Labour mayor of Leicester has said.

Peter Soulsby said he was “disappointed and frustrated” by his party’s complacency, which could allow the former Europe minister to win back his former seat of Leicester East.

Clavinova · 28/06/2024 11:00

How is Keir Starmer's moral high ground upheld if Keith Vaz is a Labour candidate?

Seriously? So a labour mayor makes a "could" comment about Vaz standing for another party and it's still Starmer's fault?

Nice how you slipped in the suggestion of him being a Labour candidate even though you knew it wasn't true. That's the Tory way, isn't it? Tell a lie knowing some people will read that and not any subsequent rebuttal. Just like the £2094 tax lie.

Notonthestairs · 28/06/2024 11:07

"Nice how you slipped in the suggestion of him being a Labour candidate even though you knew it wasn't true. "

Yes, that was quite deliberate.

I made a mistake for which I apologised.

He was a party member;

Vaz, who was still a Labour party member when he announced he would be a candidate two weeks ago

Zonder · 28/06/2024 11:21

That's quite different from suggesting he might be a Labour candidate! But again I'm afraid I think that's the Tory way. Get the story out there whatever the truth is, and away it floats.

It looks to me as though the Labour supporting Guardian and a Labour Mayor were keen to 'get the story out';

Its almost as if you hadnt actually read the article before posting.

Silly to suggest Conservatives dont have more than their fair share of wrong uns. Mark Menzies using constituency moneny to pay off the Bad Men (not even the first time that had happened!), or Peter Bone hitting and verbally abusing staff and putting his genitals in a staff members face, asking for massages. Peter Bone didn't need to stand for another party as his girlfriend is standing as the Conservative candidate in his old seat. And the Conservatives were quite ok to carry on with Pincher until his efforts at groping people became too public. Zahawi swore blind he'd paid all taxes as Chancellor whilst neogtiating payments with HMRC.

Is that you not responding but deflecting again Clav?

I haven't - I am suggesting that Labour have more than their fair share of 'wrong uns'.

Look who took over from Keith Vaz in Leicester East;

I was reading some of Keir Starmer's biography at the weekend (the biography was written with Starmer's co-operation). The book claims that Starmer took "swift action" against Mike Hill - not according to the victim;

In fact, I am considering emailing the victim's lawyers to alert them that their client's case has been distorted in this way.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/06/2024 11:57

OrangeMacaron · 28/06/2024 06:52

Then you haven't read the news. The Tory insiders betting on the election date has been a big story for the past week.

I asked which Labour ones were betting with insider info.

OrangeMacaron · 28/06/2024 12:00

Clavinova · 28/06/2024 11:43

In fact, I am considering emailing the victim's lawyers to alert them that their client's case has been distorted in this way.

You have nothing. Years and years of posting on MN and you have nothing left but lies, deflection and bluster.

Do you look around at the shit-filled rivers, the food banks, the collapsing A&E departments, the ruined schools and shattered lives and think yes, this is the best we can do and I'm proud of this country? Or tell us honestly, when yet another Tory scandal breaks do you mutter 'for fucks sake, can't you stop being profiteering amoral criminal dickheads' before you wearily turn to your computer knowing you need to drag up some painfully irrelevant article about Wes Streeting or - scraping the barrel - people who aren't even standing for Labour anymore?

All this time you've spent desperately posting articles and pasting text that more often than not doesn't support what you're saying, in the hope that people won't actually read it and realise, and look where we are. Look what fourteen years of Tory government has brought us.

And you're still posting irrelevant, pointless nonsense in the last gasp of an election campaign that has heaped yet more embarrassment and shame on the Tories. Do you still think it's worthwhile?

OrangeMacaron · 28/06/2024 12:01

Gwenhwyfar · 28/06/2024 11:57

Yes so sorry, I misunderstood.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/06/2024 12:03

OrangeMacaron · 28/06/2024 12:01

Yes so sorry, I misunderstood.

I am not defending them necessarily on corruption in general, but definitely so far on this gambling thing. Betting against yourself is a silly thing to do, but nothing wrong with it per se. Even the people who canvassed for you probable knew you might not win though it's hardly motivating.

I'm also disgusted at Vaughan Gething's behaviour and the way the shadow secretary of state for Wales insulted the opposition parties for the vote of no confidence in him.

My point was just on the gambling scandal.

Anniegetyourgun · 28/06/2024 12:52

Embarrassingly, I've been caught by Clavinova twice on this thread. Twice in one morning. First I saw Keith Vaz and thought "oh no, he was a bad 'un iirc, what's he doing still in the party?" Turns out he isn't. Then apparently he'd been replaced as the Labour candidate by some woman with a stalking conviction? What were they thinking - oh, they weren't. It's annoying that some people had to take time out from making coherent arguments to look up the up-to-date facts.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2024 13:25

@Gwenhwyfar so far - none I believe. The one that was suspended bet on himself to lose - that's not insider information- that's just twatty behaviour

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2024 13:40

@OrangeMacaron I'm beginning to think clavinova is a Tory MPs wife- all party's have a few shits in them- problem is the Tory's have them in greater numbers which combined with a country's public services falling to bits , a Brexit that has failed to deliver the moon on a stick and a load of gullible xenophobes out there falling for Farages bullshit means the Tory's have ended up pleasing not enough people to be voted in again

Those in the Tory's who don't think they are quite Goebbels enough believe Farages bullshit- those who are more business minded and pro EU are turning mainly to the Lib Dem's and some actually aren't seeing much in starmers position to frighten the horses and turning to Labour -

Thems the breaks- the only reason the Tory's got in 2017 and 2019 was because a lot of middle England really were not keen on Corbyn and a lot still thought Brexit would be a good thing- it solves sod all and now the proof is out there, they have run out of ideas and steam - that's why so many MPs have stood down too- they know the game is up

I think it is simpler than that, Starmer upset Johnson.

Anyone who is still stupid enough to vote Tory is so brainwashed they’ll never change - only the diehards who would vote for a chimpanzee in a blue rosette are left

I am always intrigued by people who think insulting people will make them see the error of their ways.
Either that or they think it is amusing and it makes them sound 'edgy' and clever.
It does neither of these things, just makes the poster sound unintelligent enough to debate without resorting to playground tactics.
