General election 2024

Seeing as it’s anonymous… where is your vote going?

My views -

Conservative - Potentially had a tough ride with Covid & brexit aftermath to navigate. However, looking at the state of the NHS & the ever increasing price rises in almost everything… how could I vote them in again?

Labour - Almost feels like the only likely alternative. Change is as good as any? But Keir starmer does precisely 0 for me. I cannot get passionate about him.

Greens - Won our constituency a while ago, whilst I appreciate what they stand for the changes they made locally have had a negative impact on the average citizen IMO.

Reform - Nigel Farage is DIFFERENT, I don’t think that can be denied. Part of me thinks bold and controversial is what we need and the other thinks he is a brilliant campaigner and is just playing up to the people trying to act like ‘one of the working class’ to garner votes.

Where is your vote going?

Labour. This is the least happy with them I’ve been in years, but I’d not vote for anyone else

purplerain37 · 10/06/2024 20:54

Labour

Those voting Labour, can I ask if that’s because you genuinely believe in Keir Starmer and his policies or because you just want conservatives out?

Of course I want the Tories to be kicked out. Their government has failed badly even in its own terms. The economy is hopeless, the NHS is a shambles and, if there is one thing we can all agree on it’s that Brexit has been a disaster for this country. They deserve to lose and lose very badly.

Starmer is a decent man and a person of integrity who will be a competent, if uninspiring PM.

I would obviously prefer Labour to be bolder, but as a former party activist I understand why they are so cautious given the state of the public finances and why they are adopting, in the political jargon, a ‘ming vase’ strategy.

Wheresyourvote · 10/06/2024 20:54

I agree, vote for who you are least opposed too if that’s the best you have. Don’t not vote at all! Don’t waste your voice!

They won't reform the NHS, they will effectively ust remove it.

Would that necessarily be a bad thing? Looking from the outside the nhs seems over run with management (a thing the private sector got rid of in the 90s), dreadful procurement, waste (please visit Southmead hospital Bristol a 200 x 75 yard atrium!! That needs cleaning, heating, maintenance etc.)
Would having private companies take over and run it with a national insurance tax at the right level be a better solution?

namechangedforthis2024 · 10/06/2024 20:54

Labour.

I think KS is really good and acknowledge he doesn't have film star charisma or flash policies but he and a number of his cabinet are compassionate and competent and that's a good thing imo.

I do also REALLY want the Tories out but that's incidental.

NCNC10000009 · 10/06/2024 20:55

I've never voted in my life. I don't even know who is currently in power- labour or conservative. Ive no idea. It means nothing to me. I'm a civil servant. No I'm not a troll. Just being honest.
I would like to understand more but I Just don't have the headspace

Well no, I don’t believe that is their plan. It’s moving the NHS towards being more means tested, with those people earning enough paying towards their costs - similar to models seen in some European countries where staff are also paid more.
It’s certainly not working as it is. It needs a complete rework. It means I’ll pay more, but I’m happy to do that if it works better and looks after staff.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/06/2024 20:56

Straight into the ballot box once it has been cast.

I’m tired of hearing about ‘wasted votes’. No vote is wasted. The idea of democracy is you vote with your feelings/opinion and if your party doesn’t win, so be it. That’s not ‘wasted’ - that’s something said by someone encouraging you to not vote how you actually want.

Tories - No
Labour - As it is currently - hell no.
Reform - YES. Solid plans to reform the NHS properly (which will involve me paying more) and I want a change from the same old two party race. They need to be challenged.

Ah but according to Reform, “women are the sponging gender and should be deprived of healthcare”.

They sound delightful. It’s no wonder women are flocking to them.

You don't even know who is currently in power? I've seen some depressing stuff on here but that is incredible.

Labour - I am not enthused by them but it's got to be worth a try, also they will almost certainly beat the Tories where I live. The sitting MP has hung on because he was a good constituency MP and not a bad guy generally, but he is standing down and Labour also does have a very good local candidate so the Tories are almost certainly going out here.

I am genuinely worried by what the Tories would do to people's rights (I would almost put money on them coming after maternity/paternity leave in the name of 'productivity' if we let them in again, for example) and on their current trajectory I would fully expect them to start going for the return Section 28 type rules about discussing same sex relationships in education. I fear Labour will not do enough to reverse the harm the Tories have done, but I hope at least they won't deepen it. And I hope to see an end to the 'performative cruelty' we've seen from the Tories - can't make anyone's lives better so all they can do is promise to make life worse for vulnerable groups that they have scapegoated for the problems the government created. Cheap (on the surface, but actually expensive in outcome), nasty and reprehensible politics that I don't see Labour practising.

It would be a dreadful thing. The NHS is brilliant, but needs proper management and proper funding. I'm familiar with Southmead thank you, I had my baby there and they were fantastic.

I've lived in several countries without a healthcare for all system, many hospitals are still underfunded and some actually offer rather poor care, you just pay more for the displeasure.

HRTQueen · 10/06/2024 20:58

Labour they are on course for a comfortable win

I am getting very concerned about Reform

The more votes for the Conservatives receive the less Reform do and that is fine by me as they won’t win. What Nigel Farage said today is despicable

the LibDems well unfortunately they are being totally overshadowed

Wishfulthinking23 · 10/06/2024 20:58

Definitely not Labour

Wheresyourvote · 10/06/2024 20:58

@NCNC10000009 I hear you it can be very confusing and overwhelming. Maybe have a quick google and try and take in the basics, your vote matters 🙏

It will have to be labour agree with PP Keir does 0 for me too but I can only find reasons not to vote for the other parties.
Reform I don't think actually believe they stand a chance; I think they will get enough votes to form a coalition - which they'll do with conservatives and sell their souls the same as lib dems.
Lib Dem's cannot forgive them for selling their souls.
Greens came across really well I think it was on QT last week but realistically to vote for them would be a wasted vote.
So from a very shallow pool it reluctantly will have to be labour but I haven't heard anything yet for why I should.

I agree with the sentiment that Keir might not be captain charisma but his background as a human rights lawyer is fantastic for a PM who you hope will prioritise the wellbeing of the majority of the country.

A Reform candidate (Ian Gribbin) apparently said it. It’s been in the news this evening. He also said that Britain should have accepted Hitler’s pre-war offer of neutrality. Reform HQ have commented that his comments are “probably true”.

In Scotland so SNP
Mainly because of their stance on Palestine and tactical as I'm in one of the few conservative seats in Scotland
