General election 2024

Seeing as it’s anonymous… where is your vote going?

My views -

Conservative - Potentially had a tough ride with Covid & brexit aftermath to navigate. However, looking at the state of the NHS & the ever increasing price rises in almost everything… how could I vote them in again?

Labour - Almost feels like the only likely alternative. Change is as good as any? But Keir starmer does precisely 0 for me. I cannot get passionate about him.

Greens - Won our constituency a while ago, whilst I appreciate what they stand for the changes they made locally have had a negative impact on the average citizen IMO.

Reform - Nigel Farage is DIFFERENT, I don’t think that can be denied. Part of me thinks bold and controversial is what we need and the other thinks he is a brilliant campaigner and is just playing up to the people trying to act like ‘one of the working class’ to garner votes.

Where is your vote going?

We don't have one of the lowest rates of overall taxes though...... when looking at direct and indirect taxation "The UK's combination of both high direct and indirect taxes contributes to its status as one of the highest taxed countries.".

You have to actually look at all taxes since that's is where the government gather total revenue.....

It depends what you are including. If you look at income tax and VAT, we are low. Inheritance tax isn't directly comparable, but we are still low. Ditto tax on savings.

Corporation tax here is also below the global average.

Swollenandgrouchy · 15/06/2024 21:35

I live in the Scottish Borders and only the Tories and SNP get a look in. So I’m forced to vote for SNP.

paolo2145 · 16/06/2024 16:50

As i have said previously i am backing Labour at this election. My area s straight fight between SNP & Labour and whilst I have been an SNP voter last decade, they like the Tories have been in power too long and become lazy & taken voters for granted.

However, if i was in an area where Labour couldn't win i would back any party who was main challenger to the Tories.

The Tories i think live in some kind of parallel universe as Bill Cash and several others seem to think we should be grateful & remember how good we have had things under the Tories lol

Voters must remember how good they’ve had it under the Conservatives

A vote for Reform would put our incredible successes at risk by installing a Labour government

How good we've had it under the Conservatives???

Ye Gods 🤦‍♂️

It's like they live in a world where they don't exist. Truss is like that. To hear her speak now, you'd think she's lived in a world where there never was a Liz Truss. Amazing.

Lib Dem

Crispynoodle · 17/06/2024 00:55

I'm voting tactically to keep the DUP out!

willowtolive · 21/06/2024 09:12

Just realised most constituencies here in Cornwall are looking to be going to labour. That really is something! Mine in north Cornwall is still Tory/ Lib Dem marginal with labour looking to split the vote unfortunately. So looks like I will still have to vote Lib Dem tactically

@HappiestSleeping were you actually around in the eighties? Much happier times and other countries envied us for having good leadership unlike now when they feel sorry for us!

maybe but that was built on selling off all our assets cheaply and not investing for the future.....

We are reaping the good leadership of Thatcher now - in water, electricity, oil

for too long we've valued short-term gain over long-term investing and public services>

If thatcher had acted like Norway in the 80s we could be one of the richest countries in the world instead we are a basket case - with lots of other countries' pension provisions owning and fleecing most of our utilities.

You can thank Thatcher's shortsightedness for the shit in our rivers and sky-high utilities costs all of which have been massively underinvested in.

And I was a Tory voter till 2016 - now our constituency has been changed it's a two-horse race be shit or shitter - so will either not bother or spoil my ballot.

Our political system is beyond broken - so glad our DDs have EU citizenship and will be out of here once qualified and once the in-laws die we will do the same.

CreamLampshade · 21/06/2024 15:26

Labour. I like starmer. He came off well against Sunak in that initial debate by (mostly) not getting drawn into Sunak’s brattish, rude behaviour. The man has morals that the Tories can only dream of. And I don’t give a shit about charisma personally - it’s not an indicator of a solid leader. And we need solidity and safety right now.

TheNuthatch · 26/06/2024 11:55

My area is true Labour but I usually vote Conservative as their values are closest to mine. I cannot vote for them this time though, they definitely need a stint in opposition!
Labour - Our local Labour MP has a big majority but there are strong rumours of corruption and turning a blind eye to grooming gangs. Keir Stamer comes across as quite arrogant to me and he never answers a bloody question. I was fuming with his answer to the Rosie Duffield question on tv! Also Angela Rayner's tory scum comments! The thought of my 16 year old having a vote makes me shudder, and I just can't see anything in their manifesto that will actually help those who need it. I cannot believe they are refusing to lift the 2 child cap for example.
Reform- absolutely no
Greens - ludicrous manifesto
Conservatives- Our candidate is a nepo baby (his mum is a spad) who I doubt has ever been to our town.
Lib Dem - I was thinking I would vote for them, but when I looked into our candidate she is all over X describing herself as cis, and blocking and attacking anyone who cares about the cass report and womens rights.

I feel politically homeless and incredibly depressed about the options available. I might end up spoiling my ballot this time. I heard that if you spoil it and write a message, the candidates have to read them to check it isn't a vote for them.

1dayatatime · 26/06/2024 14:11

@TheNuthatch

"I feel politically homeless and incredibly depressed about the options available."

That accurately sums up how I feel as well and I think there are many others of the same view as well.

Clearly Labour will win but I think that there will be a large number of new and existing Labour voters who will become disappointed and angry that Labour doesn't produce the change they are expecting. This is not the fault of Labour, there is only so much you can do to repair the damage when the economy is weak, debt at a record high and only 5 years to fix it

I then see a sharper divide between the hard right and hard left for the 2029 elections that we are currently seeing in France.

I completely agree. I don't think KS will have a long honeymoon period! I'm worried that he will start throwing red meat to the hard left in the labour party as he can't enact any 'change' without spending money that he doesn't have. I'm also concerned about ending up with Angela Rayner as PM in the future if the left decide to get rid of KS 😫

I've never voted in my life. I don't even know who is currently in power- labour or conservative. Ive no idea. It means nothing to me. I'm a civil servant. No I'm not a troll. Just being honest.
I would like to understand more but I Just don't have the headspace

TBH it isn't worth the headspace. They are all a bunch of self serving liars or those who tell half truths and cover up the rest. They just wear different coloured ties.

How many Labour PMs have been removed from their positions having delivered a working majority in a general election?

rookiemere · 26/06/2024 15:47

Conservative, although I'm mildly ashamed of it so haven't posted my vote yet.

I live in Scotland so usually my vote focuses on whoever is most likely to keep SNP out of power, and we have a genuinely likeable hardworking Labour MP voted in in our area, so it's usually easy to vote Labour and feel good about myself.

But as SNP have done a pretty good job of decimating themselves I don't need to vote that way. I already pay more taxes in Scotland than I would do in England ( although of course it was conservatives that gave the Scottish government all that power despite them losing the independence referendum) that I can't bring myself to vote for a party who is likely to increase my tax burden and likely change pension saving so the future I'm saving for isn't assured.

I don't particularly want to vote Conservative, but Labour aren't making a lot of commitments around what they won't change, so it all seems fair game. They'll win anyway so my vote is irrelevant.

I voted for Tony Blair and ended up with Gordon Brown. My opinion is my own, I don't expect others to agree but I am entitled to it.
