Sunak: Stupid or a bare faced liar?

In last night's debate, he repeatedly made a big deal out of a "completely independent report" about Labour costing £2000 per household. It was his answer to nearly everything.Hmm

But it was known to be a lie. So why did he tell it? Did he think people wouldn't find out? Has he not learnt that the country is sick to the back teeth of lying Tory PMs?

Who thought this was a good idea?Shock

I've voted both, but would also like to add hated by his comms team 😂

itsgettingweird · 05/06/2024 16:36

Yep. Definitely both.

Can I also add a stroppy teen personality to the choices!

SusanSHelit · 05/06/2024 16:37

All of the above!

Truly clutching at straws.

Rosieposy89 · 05/06/2024 16:48

Dead man walking

frankentall · 05/06/2024 17:19

It does seem odd there appear to have been no grown ups in the room to point out that this would blow up in his face.

Zonder · 05/06/2024 17:32

Wishful thinking. Clutching at straws.

Sakura7 · 05/06/2024 17:43

It was outrageous to claim that figure was provided by the Treasury. Such a blatant lie, and he knew exactly what he was doing.

Shame there won't be any repercussions for him.

Startingagainandagain · 05/06/2024 18:13

I voted 'both'

I definitely think that his comms/campaign team also hate his guts...because everyday brings another PR disaster.

More seriously I want the next government look into sanctions for any politician blatantly lying in Parliament and to the public like this.

The rot started with Boris Johnson and then they carried on routinely making up stats and passing propaganda as facts.

There has to be consequences.

Yes I agree, it's deliberately misleading the public, Boris was a master at it but now we are in danger of politicians just thinking it's normal practise.

Sunak is very far from stupid, but he is also desperate to find something to move the dial in an election campaign which the party he leads is currently losing badly. Hence the ridiculous £2000 claim.

It’s an old political trick ; add up all your opponent’s spending commitments, making the number as inflated as possible by using worst-case assumptions then claim the cost will be applied equally to every household in the country.

Starmer could and should have jumped on it faster & rebutted it harder. He will need to do better in the next debate, because his opponents now think he struggles to think on his feet when he is the one under attack rather than asking the questions.

Humphriescushion · 05/06/2024 18:53

I think all.
Saw on twitter that maybe he let Sunak run with it though I think at some point he said it was garbage, in order to pin the liar tag on him and his ministers. Seems to have worked in my view. It’s everywhere today.

So desperate that he'll say absolutely anything?Shock

Or
So stupid he trusts his team to keep him right?Hmm

Lost all critical thinking ability and just going through the motions. He’s probably got the house movers booked already.

bozzabollix · 05/06/2024 20:28

The problem is that people will believe it. So the lie will pay off. There’s no honour amongst thieves.

DonnaDonna0 · 05/06/2024 20:30

I have to admit to not watching it but I’m sure on the radio this morning it reported that Sunak had came out slightly above Starmer on the polls after the show.
You have to ask how?

Because he kept shouting and interrupting, oh and loudly repeating that lie over and bloody over.

Higglings · 05/06/2024 20:34

At least Sunak answered questions.

Unlike Starmer who looked like a deer caught in headlights and couldn't answer anything.

OhYoko · 05/06/2024 20:38

Saw this tweet this morning. Sums Sunak up.

I also think this. The tag liar will also stick.

I don’t think they will. The news that he was lying through his teeth has eclipsed the lie. Sophie Ridge said that taxes have gone up £13k per household since 2019. Any more attempts at the lie will now be countered with that.

FiveFoxes · 05/06/2024 21:30

All the Tory papers ran with this lie. And the Today programme radio was repeating it as the headline this morning, before saying that Labour were disputing it.

It will spread and be believed. Think about how many people are now repeating that KS doesn't have a plan when he clearly does. He just doesn't have stupid plans like National Service.

Sunak's problem is not enough believe it. He gained a narrow advantage last night. A very narrow advantage.

This morning, it turns out his main point was an utter lie. Contrived by the Tory party. The party that lies to us. Piss on our heads, tell us it's raining and expect us to be grateful.Angry
