General election 2024

Women voting for Labour?

bearsbritches · 04/06/2024 09:40

To wonder why women would be voting for Labour when they support trans rights over women's rights? I am concerned we are going to descend even further into all of this 'woke' madness and it is women who bear the brunt.

Starmer has back peddled on the self ID policy all of a sudden before the election, shock, but we can't trust that.

I certainly won't be voting for the Tories and can't bring myself to vote Labour for many reasons. Where does that leave disillusioned voters?

You’re welcome to welcome them into your own private spaces.

You have no right to set aside other women’s right to safety and dignity. Any male-bodied person I see in a changing room will be told to leave.

However - this situation has arisen under a Conservative government, OP. Focus on that.

So why did you post then?

To have an open dialogue as previously explained in one of my comments. Why are you policing people's motives for posting when it is in the initial post?

@PollyPeep I agree. Most threads are anti labour in origin. None criticising the government’s record. There’s a Gender ID one every other day but no one gives a damn about rising poverty and inequality. Weird that.

I am anti Tory too. That is in my post.

It's a complex issue. The Tory stance may be correct for predatory trans people but it's pretty appalling for those just quietly trying to pass as the opposite sex for less nefarious reasons. I have no problem sharing a bathroom with an unthreatening transwoman but I have every problem with being vulnerable in a bathroom to a predatory rapist. Therein lies the problem. Both are 'transwomen' and there is no easy solution. I'll still be voting Labour. There is too much at stake after the disaster and chaos of the past 14 years and I find the Tory stance on this issue too simplistic and opportunistic.

I’ll vote for whoever will stop this exact post being repeated ad infinitum along with the regurgitating of the ones regarding the threat of VAT being added to public school fees.

Votes are between the voter and the ballot box.

God you're so right. Somehow every Mumsnet politics thread is anti-trans or about how the VAT will affect state schools (lol). Mumsnet must be number one on the conservative "media strategy" hit list. I never see any of these kinds of posts on other forums, and there are never any anti-conservative posts on here.

Because other issues exist?

pointythings · 04/06/2024 13:40

I'm sure the Labour Party are terribly worried about the tiny number of women who refuse to vote for them on this single issue.

Meanwhile, most women are concerned about council cuts (which mainly affect women), the running down of health and education (which mainly affects women), the effective legalisation of rape ('nuff said), the refusal to reform the rental sector (which mainly affects women) and the removal of paid leave from day one for temp and agency workers after leaving the EU (which mainly affects women).

How is that when I have pointed out I dislike both Tory and Labour.....

Because i care more about the cist of loving, the nhs, education, housing, transport, social services etc more than i care about changing rooms

Rookangaroo4 · 04/06/2024 13:41

Completely agree with you. I think a lot of people are so intent on getting the Tories out they don’t even care. It was the same with Brexit . So many people voted on immigration alone and they have spent the last few years moaning like mad ! I still have no idea who I’m voting yet but it won’t be Labour. I’m 99% sure they will win though.

Maray1967 · 04/06/2024 13:42

I believe transwomen have the right to change etc away from other men. This should not mean that they use women’s spaces.

I also believe that our public services need urgent attention and I am not convinced that the Conservative Party genuinely wishes to focus on them.

In neither case have I had personal experience- I’ve not been on a trolley in A&E or had a relative needing a care home place. I haven’t felt at risk by a male claiming to be a transwoman.

don’t vote based only on personal experiences.

DearestGentleReader · 04/06/2024 13:43

The problem with criticism of people "voting on one issue" is that there isn't any nuance in politics. Once they* have your vote, they have your vote for all the batshit, cruel, distasteful, dumb policies they might implement once in power.

"The people voted for this" they will say.
No, "the people" probably didn't vote specifically for or agree with a large chunk of what any government gets up to, they just hold their nose and vote for the party they tend to agree with more than the other parties, or at least the one they disagree with the least or can stomach a bit better.
*"They" as in any political party.

Evidently I need to highlight this part of my post, after accusations of working for the Conservatives and being a single issue voter.

I certainly won't be voting for the Tories and can't bring myself to vote Labour for many reasons.

Who will you vote for OP?

Sometimes it's better to vote for the lesser of 2 evils.

You can't vote based on one policy (which many people do)

And you should vote on what would be better for the country and population as a whole (but most will vote based on one policy which will benefit themselves)

Im still undecided. But I won't be voting Conservative

BitOutOfPractice · 04/06/2024 13:47

And yet the only issue can can bear to iterate if this one 🙄

So sick of these threads. Tory rather than Russian I'm assuming at this time of day.

How anyone can look around at the damage done to education and the health service, the cuts to services, the state of social welfare and the number of children living in poverty and think the Tories will do anything for women is beyond me.

It's insulting that they think we're this stupid.

IClaudine · 04/06/2024 13:52

OP, you only have to look at the local elections to see that this single issue is way down the list of priorities for most people. If it wasn't, Keen's party would have won more than a couple of hundred votes in total.

It is not the issue that the GE will be won or lost on.

Comparing the GE to the Brexit vote is a bit silly, because the Brexit referendum was a single issue vote.

Oh, and welcome to MN!

It's because it all feels like a cynical tactic to push women away from voting for labour, which means the conservatives will be more likely to win. Let's face it, it's still a two party race. Apologies if you're a genuine poster. It's just the sheer number of threads like this makes it feel like heavy-handed manipulation.

I'm not policing. I'm asking. You obviously aren't really interested in anyone's views if they're different to yours. This is old ground anyway and no one's going to change their mind.
