General election 2024

Will Labour pay Jnr doctors the ridculous 35% they are demanding?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 29/05/2024 12:24

This is unaffordable and that is a fact
So what promises are the Labour lot making, that is if they have the time to discuss this other than what 's happening to Dainae Abbott

If us the taxpayers could afford the 35%, then I'd be happy to sanction the rise but we can't afford that

FIVE days of strike - this will have another massive impact on those waiting for appointments and those having them cancelled. The doctors knew what the pay and conditions were when they decided to take the job and the strikes should be outlawed. The police can't strike, the armed forces can't strike, so why are doctors allowed to strike??

Ministers accuse doctors' union of cynical tactics with walkout due to start on 27 June in England.

Everyone thinks their passion or career is the most important and worthy of increased spending, whether that’s education/justice/health care/defence/benefits.

We can’t do everything for everyone, we are no longer v wealthy

Edited

You're right, we are not very wealthy. We spewed the money down the toilet via the Rwanda scheme, on top of all the rest of the ways the Tories wasted our money.

I suspect the real problem here is that junior doctors are asking for an inflation based pay increase and the OP (as a council worker) is unlikely to get one.

No worries OP you can always get another job. Or sell the sports car.

I think the OP retired at 55

There are many doctors prepared to come to England and this has always been the case
It's historical that docs and nurses left England for Saudia Arbia, UAE, USA, Canada, New Zealnd etc and we got docs and nurses from the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India and now some African countries as well

People have always moved around

Really? in the last couple of years. I don't think so............

Mrsdyna · 30/05/2024 05:56

Has what is meant by a fact changed while I was out today?

The more appropriate question is can we afford not to pay them?

Oddly there was a government minister going on last week about inflation falling and wages were increasing almost as if them telling us last year that wage increases would fuel inflation was bollox.

Inflation is fuelled by business over charging, look at Tesco profits? or the banks?
The Cycle industry is in the poo because of over charging, forecourt diesel prices the most expensive in Europe, as are our electricity prices.....

Rishi Sunak made 330k per week last year, paid just 20% on these earnings but we have no money to pay people (healthcare staff) who lets face it, are the only people that matter.

Ill health can strike down anyone, young old rich or poor.

Rish! is paid so much because he is so much more talented than healthcare professionals.

Which is why he doesn't know when and how to use an umbrella.

Whilst most of us have got poorer over the past 14 years, the richest have got much, much richer.
As a country our wealth is not that different, the distribution is though, but that's the will of the people.

But don't worry, if we cant give our junior doctors a decent pay in this country Australia, NZ et al are queuing up to take them off our hands

Funnily enough, junior doctors here (NZ) are striking at the moment.

Actually, inflation is caused by a poor monetary policy. When the Trussterfuck happened, the markets lost faith in the government which caused interest rates to rise, more government borrowing and quantitative easing, which in turn caused inflation.

There were other factors, but essentially, Liz Truss buggered us in 49 days to an extent that it is hard to comprehend. Listening to her speak bow, it's as if she inhabits a world where Liz Truss never existed. Amazing.

Junior doctors eventually become senior consultants and GP’s on pretty good salaries. They’re training. They’re still learning. They’re not qualified yet. All this is spelt out when they apply to go into medicine. If they’re not prepared to put the training in, and want to be performing brain surgery within the year, then it’s not the job for them. But yes, I suspect Labour will give them pretty much what they’re asking for. That’s what Labour do. They’ll find someone who they can get a bit of extra tax from….

You clearly don't understand what a junior doctor is. Junior doctor covers every category of doctor up to consultant level so can include very senior regustrars. They are indeed qualified.

Further I believe they are underpaid at each of those levels that make up the very wide category of junior doctors whether they have just finished uni to whether they are 15 years qualified.

bombastix · 30/05/2024 09:31

It is highly convenient to keep their salaries in the gutter. Conscientious people highly qualified and doing the bulk of the work in an ageing population that needs them. Grumbling Conservatives who presumably are too cheap to pay on insurance or too ill should take some heed; these people have value outside the UK. The Labour Party should get some intelligent policy on medical school fees and their salaries; their loyalty is waning. The Conservatives idea is to put them to the grindstone for free claps during a pandemic.

Wasn’t ’doctors in training’ what the health minister tried calling them a few months back? Presumably suggesting that only consultants are actually qualified doctors!

I think anything with those views should forfeit the right to be seen by a doctor.

DD is dr about to piss off to Oz because of poor pay snd T/c here. Just refused leave AGAIN because of rota . Works 12 hour shifts back to back regularly and is on her knees . Shit way to treat highly skilled professionals who give their all to patients. I wouldn't have believed the poor way they're treated if I'd not seen it first hand . They need to be paid properly at the very least

"refused leave becuse of rota"

So you want others to suffer, change their days, and times at work just because your DD wants time off.

"piss off to OZ"
That is historical and nothing new

FACT - doctors and nurses come over from "OZ" along with other professions to work in England,, right!!

What's your point?

So what is your DD grossing per week (I bet you may would love to work 12 hours daily to pay off mortgages, save up but don't get the opps

FACT, leaving England to work abroad in many profession is a HISTORICAL fact,

Why are you fixated on a coalition when all the polls show Labour winning with a majority?

Incoherent arguments undermine any credibility you may once have had.

Sadly, the die-hard Labour voters see a massive majority for Labour and family to recognise the facts that in politics things can change overnight. They chose to ignore the facts, EG, labour is not going to pay the doctors the riculsous 35% they are striking over again and again putting millions patients health at risk. They also fail to note what is happening with one of their very longstanding woman MP's - It must be a dream come true living in the land ofsweet dreams

The bottom line, sadly millions will vote for their political party in the false beleife that their party is looking out for them. When in reality, most good politician will always put themselves first but will never admit to that

You know that health care workers are being refused any leave because of rota gaps? So get to the end of their 4month rotation and haven’t been allowed time off and can’t carry the leave forward to the next 4months? Yes it gets paid but people need fucking leave. A lot of specialties dictate the one week that you are allowed to opt to take leave. Yes other professions do that like the 17 weeks teachers get or whatever.
But I knew a doctor that was about to hand her notice in as they wanted her to work a night shift before her wedding. Which never finished on time and you always gave free hours. Other doctors offered to work it for her but they refused a rota swap! They had changed the rota at short notice. Only allowed the swap when she handed in her notice.

CormorantStrikesBack · 30/05/2024 11:04

I don’t think that’s what anyone wants. People want there to be enough staff that people can take their legally entitled annual leave. It’s not rocket science.

id love to see some stats on how many Aussie drs come here because i really can’t imagine it’s many.

CormorantStrikesBack · 30/05/2024 11:05

so you agree the Tories got in via the back door in 2010 with their coalition party?

I'd say poor and inflexible management is as much of a problem in the NHS as wages as per your example. A highly specialised (cancer) nurse I know has just handed in her notice because she wanted to reduce her hours as she winds down towards retirement. Her management wouldn't even consider it and gave her an ultimatum of continue her existing hours/rotas or leave, so she's leaving! In fact, she's continuing to work on the same ward, but at a lower level, as there was a contract available on a lower grade for fewer hours, but she won't be allowed to do any work at the higher level, so she can't administer chemotherapy drugs anymore and can only do more menial tasks like admin, drinks rounds, etc. A massive waste of her experience and skills, but apparently that's what her NHS management would prefer! Crazy!
