Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes
Jacob Rees Mogg
Jonathan Gullis

I'm not sure we're going to get a Portillo moment this time.

The Portillo moment was because it was a total.shock - no one expected Stephen Twigg to beat Portillo. He'd only stood so.that Labour had a candidate.

This time, it seems no one is safe. Even Sunak. I mean, I'd be very surprised if Sunak lost his seat but it wouldn't be the total.shock that Portillo was.

I'm really hoping my MP, Therese Coffey, loses. She's got a solid majority but I think she might lose it. I've only seen one poster up for her so far.

DontStopMe · 24/06/2024 10:18

So many to choose from.

Jacob Rees Mogg
Jeremy Hunt
Liz Truss

pointythings · 24/06/2024 10:26

@EmmaGrundyForPM I agree with you, but as long as people don't get complacent there should be some tasty helpings of schadenfreude to enjoy.

CassieMaddox · 24/06/2024 10:35

Badenoch
Cates
Jenrick

With Braverman, Rees Mogg and Liam Fox in reserve

Westfacing · 24/06/2024 12:41

I hope the likes of Hunt and Sunak just about hang on - just to see them on the Opposition benches. They've only known success and power so it will be a nice change for them.

I seriously think they secretly hope to lose so they can toddle off and make more money.

Droolylabradors · 24/06/2024 12:53

@Violetparis why caroline nokes? She is pretty centre left I'd say, a very good constituency MP.

PandoraSox · 24/06/2024 12:56

Jenrick, Braverman and Galloway.

Jenrick, Braverman and Galloway.

It's hard to argue with those three even when the "Worst people in politics" field is this crowded.

GodlessCommie · 23/06/2024 15:04

There are over 20 on my list but if I have to choose three, Sunak, Rees Mogg and Gove.

Gove's not standing.

The Tories have parachuted "Air BNB Guy" into Gove's seat and he is already in hot water for deceiving voters by claiming to be a resident of the constituency, even doing a "got the keys" front door photo, when it's just an AirBNB rented for a few weeks.

Droolylabradors · 24/06/2024 13:52

Violetparis · 27/05/2024 17:06

I think she's smug and condescending.

Ah, found a previous answer.

I'm a constituent and I've never heard a negative word about her. Kit Malthouse north of Caroline's constituency however is a different matter.

I want that for Sunak. I want the rest out.

Jeremy Corbyn
Diane Abbot
Angela Rayner

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2024 18:40

I'm not sure you understand what a Portillo moment is.

ThisOldThang · 24/06/2024 18:43

If it's a baying mob celebrating and jeering as a much hated politician loses their seat, then I think I've chosen well.

PandoraSox · 24/06/2024 18:47

You definitely don't know the meaning of the phrase@ThisOldThang

The Portillo moment didn't involve any baying mobs or jeering. Just millions of happy people sitting at home cheering at the look on Portillo's face. Then the next day everyone was asking each other Did you see the look on Portillo's face?

It was a defining moment.

pointythings · 24/06/2024 19:07

@ThisOldThang I also watched it live. You're right, Portillo handled it well. Didn't mean millions of viewers didn't raise a small cheer or a glass at home. It isn't about baying mobs at all. I also don't think you understand the concept.

I wouldn't bother debating with him. 🙄

Michael Portillo recognised why the Tories had lost in 1997, as well as personal dignity in defeat.

I cannot imagine such a response by most of those who have been mentioned on this thread.

Euromonkey · 24/06/2024 19:49

No baying mobs involved at all. it’s the moment when someone ( usually jn a very safe seat ) loses the self-congratulatory look of a ‘winner’

The moment is made all the sweeter if they have proven themselves to be incompetent at their job but nobody really expects them to lose their seat.

verdantverdure · 24/06/2024 23:10

ThisOldThang · 24/06/2024 18:54

I watched it live.

Perhaps you need to watch it again. He's actually very dignified - unlike David Melor.

They already know the result when the official announcement goes out don't they?

BIossomtoes · 24/06/2024 23:13

Yes. The returning officer goes into a huddle with all the candidates and tells them before the announcement.

They're not in a position to give you a Portillo Moment.

A PM isn't about seeing someone you dislike losing their seat!

Westfacing · 25/06/2024 10:36

It's about a smug MP who has been in very influential positions in Government, not expected to lose the seat, inflicted damage on the country in pursuit of ideology (Portillo implemented the Poll Tax) and so on.

No baying mobs, just a loud cheer.

BIossomtoes · 25/06/2024 11:46

I was working at the poll on election night in 1997 and heard a huge cheer from a side room. I put my head round the door and asked what had happened, the answer was a gleeful chorus of “Portillo’s gone”.
