Inspired by another thread, which 3 MPs would you love to see having a Portillo moment ?

Mine are:

Caroline Nokes
Jacob Rees Mogg
Jonathan Gullis

What a sad and childish post. You will get the government you deserve.

We'll get the one the electorate voted for.

And judging by the media and here and this post it won't be one full of RW nutters who have no touch with reality!

CurlewKate · 27/05/2024 06:50

I saw Portillo himself talking about this on something yesterday! He said the point of a Portillo moment is that it should be completely unexpected-not just someone you're looking forward to going. So Gove would have been, but many of the other names people are suggesting aren't really....

Twiglets1 · 27/05/2024 06:57

I too am slightly confused that Portillo seems a decent person these days. Absolutely hated him when he was a politician. And I agree with his comment about the point of a Portillo moment being the shock - the delighted shock.

Piggywaspushed · 27/05/2024 06:59

Yes, this is true.

This current lot are so woeful nothing will surprise!

The frustrating thing is few of them care - they can just wander off to more lucrative new roles.

@Twiglets1 "I too am slightly confused that Portillo seems a decent person these days. Absolutely hated him when he was a politician"

Me too to both. I do think he's a member of a dying breed-a fundamentally decent human being who is also a Tory. There used to be quite a few of them. Someone who genuinely believed that Tory policies are good for the country. Obviously being in favour Poll Tax and the Iraq War didn't help his image. There was also a lot of covert briefing against him because of his sexuality, and because he was a bit foreign...

Of course there is also the point that the current crop are so completely appalling that practically anyone looks better by comparison...

What a sad and childish post. You will get the government you deserve.

Let's hope so, because we deserve so much better than what we have.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/05/2024 10:37

From Wiki:

"Portillo moment" has become a metaphor for an indication of a sudden and significant change in political fortunes – particularly when a leading MP (especially a Cabinet Minister) has been unseated at a general election.

I think some Tory ministers (and ex ministers) are arrogant enough to think it still won’t happen to them, so I think a Portillo moment is still on the cards (looking at you, Rees-Mogg).

How many Mumsnetters have booked annual leave for 5th July so that you can watch the results come in overnight?
I was working that day after the 1997 general election, hav8ng stayed awake until after the glorious Portillo Moment.
I remember Cecil Parkinson saying after quite a long while 'Oh good we've got one' as the first Tory win came in. They must have wondered if they were going to win any.
It was amazing feeling the next day after 18 years. I thought the Tories would lose in 1992 but Major scraped through and we had to suffer 'Back to Basics' and all that nonsense for the next 5 years.

One of the joys of retirement is being able to watch it all night. Having said that one of the not so joyful things is the idea of sleeping for 7 or 8 hours at night being a distant memory.

You can't win 'em all.

Reese Mogg
Truss (she has a huge majority so who knows)
Braverman

So many of them standing down though I am wondering how they are going to find replacements for all of them in time for the Election.

These are my 3 too. Truss gas a large majority but she's done F all fir her constituents. The hospital in her constituency is falling apart and even in her 5 minutes as PM she was asked what she was going to do about it and basically said ' nothing'. She couldn't even pretend to care. There is a local independent candidate standing who will probably make a dent in her majority at least.

Iwasafool · 27/05/2024 10:56

Victoria Atkins for many reasons one being she always sounds so soppy and it irritates me.

Lots that have previously named but I don't think I've seen Andrew Bridgen so I will nominate him.

JRM because it is hard to leave him out even though he has been named many times.

JohnCurtice · 27/05/2024 10:58

Therese Coffey

Therese Coffey

Currently a 19% chance of keeping her seat.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/05/2024 11:51

My first Portillo moment was before Portillo lost his seat. It was Chris Patten in 1992. I was a beautiful thing that I still remember with joy.😊

LuckysDadsHat · 27/05/2024 11:54

Rees-Mogg
Patel
Chope

SabrinaThwaite · 27/05/2024 12:11

Has anyone mentioned Grant Shapps yet?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/05/2024 14:13

@SabrinaThwaite is he definitely standing? There are just so many yo choose from.

Great user name BTW

As far as I know, Shapps is standing.

Loving your user name too (fellow Archers fan).

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/05/2024 15:02

I've had this name for years, ever since Emma stood for the Parish Council at the same time as a GE. I keep thinking about changing it (especially when Emma is behaving badly) but it seems to be relevant again! There's a poster on MN called Molly Button and another one called Bartleby. Lots of us around!

And Grant Shapps is an odious man.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/05/2024 15:05

There used to be one called Roysnewshirt, I think!

Agreed on all points! The big issue for me will be staying awake, but with luck my ageing body can still produce a bit of adrenaline.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/05/2024 15:15

(I have warned my husband that if JRM loses I will be so delighted there's a chance I'll wake the house up.)

ToWhitToWhoo · 27/05/2024 15:33

Philip Davies (the worst MP in parliament)

Suella Braverman

Andrea Jenkyns

If I could have a fourth, Robert Jenrick.

I would have liked to see Michael Gove, Nick Gibb and Dominic Raab have their Portillo moments; but they're retiring so they can't.

Violetparis · 27/05/2024 17:02

I think she's smug and condescending.
