I don't work on Fridays thankfully!

me neither - I plan to crawl drunkenly (and hopefully happily) into bed at about 4am to sleep soundly!

BIossomtoes · 27/05/2024 18:22

I won’t be going to bed at all. I want to enjoy the full extent of the carnage.

Me too. I've got the 5th booked off as leave. I've identified some really, really, really, really small glasses so I can toast the big scalps as they tumble without dying of alcohol poisoning.

DS has said he'll join me, even though he's not as much into politics as I am. But he's disabled so he knows what the stakes are.

BIossomtoes · 27/05/2024 18:28

I think I’ll be sticking to coffee. I don’t want to fall asleep and inadvertently miss a really juicy loss.

Piggywaspushed · 27/05/2024 18:29

I'll be spending the next six weeks feeling cross that I have to go to work on the 5th.

Iwasafool · 27/05/2024 19:44

So I normally sleep about 5 hrs a night, 11 pm till 4 am maybe. So what time does anyone think the first results will be in, I mean if I do 10 till 3 do you think I'll miss anything? I'm hoping if I can watch from 3 am I will be rested enough to enjoy it.

Iwasafool · 27/05/2024 19:49

Oh dear, just googled it and it looks like the first results can be in by 11.30. I might have to rethink.

I'm planning to go to bed for 8 and set an alarm for 11.

Same here.

Maybe we need to try and get election results day as a school holiday?!

Alconleigh · 27/05/2024 20:07

Jenrick is my MP. It's so dispiriting. So him. Rees Mogg and Chope.

@ Clavinova your wishful thinking depends on a swing away from Labour in that seat. That hasn't been the trend.

I see that Labour bucked the trend by losing three council seats in the local elections recently (gained by two independents, one conservative);

https://www.tamesidecorrespondent.co.uk/2024/05/03/independents-day-at-tameside-council-elections/

Galloway only got into the seat he did because Labour couldn't field a replacement candidate.

I wasn't suggesting that Galloway's candidate might win the seat (far from it) - only that she may do a little damage to Labour's tally (perhaps a thousand votes) - plus we don't know if Reform have found a candidate to replace the Brexit Party. See my earlier post;

Labour Angela Rayner 18,544
Conservatives 14,281
Brexit Party 3,151

Angela Rayner's 'police probe' is expected to conclude before the general election as well - it may not go the right way for her.

Remind me again how many seats Labour gained in the local council elections recently? Several hundreds, wasn't it? Honestly, you're hilarious.

I thought we were discussing specific seats. St Peter's ward is in Rayner's constituency;

David McNally’s 13 years of experience counted for nothing as Kaleel Khan won the contest in St Peter’s ward with a majority of 348.

OverNexus · 27/05/2024 21:32

Galloway WINNING in Rochdale !

I'm on this thread discussing the overall general election, but you do you...
Angela Rayner is not likely to lose her seat, much as you might dream of that happening.
The police case against her is also very unlikely to lead to serious consequences; after all she didn't owe HMRC 5 million quid, did she?

carstare · 27/05/2024 21:55

Suella Braverman is most dangerous and frankly nasty. Please let her go 🙏

She'll be leader of the Tories if not.

Angela Rayner has already said that she will resign her deputy/shadow positions if she is charged with anything. She is being investigated for electoral offences and possible council tax offences on top of the capital gains tax.

Angela Rayner's 'police probe' is expected to conclude before the general election as well - it may not go the right way for her.

Greater Manchester Police don’t appear to be making much headway with finding any evidence. I suspect the current investigation will go the same way as the first. And the instigator of the whole thing, James Daly, had the magnificent majority of 105 in 2019 so I imagine Rayner’s political career has considerably more longevity than his.

Even if the police find no evidence of illegality, I don't think she can walk away unscathed politically without a satisfactory explanation of where she was living and why she didn't have to pay the tax. Too many ex-neighbours have come forward to contradict her story.

I don’t think anyone actually cares apart from a few Tories who see it as a stick to beat Labour with. HMRC doesn’t appear to be unduly concerned and the police investigation is into alleged electoral fraud, not tax evasion. You don’t appear to be much of a fan of innocent until proved guilty, Clav.

Boundary changes suggest that James Daly’s majority is about 1000 now, but it should still go red. He was a piece of work as a councillor, and hasn’t changed.

I don't think Angela Rayner's former neighbours are Tories. Several left-wing commentators have also said that her previous explanation was unsatisfactory and evasive.

HMRC doesn’t appear to be unduly concerned

Tax expert Dan Neidle (who is a Labour Party member himself) thought HMRC would be out of time if Rayner had made a mistake by not paying capital gains tax - however he also thought that people would take a 'dim view' if the tax advice she was unwilling to disclose was simply that HMRC was out of time to take enforcement action.

You don’t appear to be much of a fan of innocent until proved guilty, Clav.

I wouldn't say that - I posted that the police investigation 'may not go the right way for her.' That seems a fair comment to make.
